Atoms Athletics Recap

Fall Opening Week Recap:

Golf's match for the week was rescheduled for Tuesday, September 10.

Girls Volleyball hosted the Hawks of Hayfield Thursday evening. Freshman and JV got the night started with a lot of positive attitudes and grit as they battled the Hawks each game. It wasn't enough as the Hawks swept both teams to get the wins. Varsity followed with giving the Hawks everything they had but the perennial power was just too much for the Atoms winning in three sets. The Atoms hit the road to Justice Wednesday evening.

Boys Volleyball got their first program win in a five set thriller over Hayfield Thursday evening. The 5th set saw the Atoms trail by three with match point on the line. A gritty performance brought the Atoms back who won 19-17 to get their first win ever. The Atoms look to build on that when they return to the court at Mount Vernon Wednesday evening.

Field Hockey played host to Marshall Thursday evening and fell short in their comeback attempt 3-2. The Statesman got out to a hot start scoring 3 times in the first quarter of the game. However, the Atoms settled in and battled back scoring two goals and missing a close opportunity in the last second to tie the game. The Atoms are back at it today in the Chantilly tournament that takes place today and tomorrow.

Football held their home opener Friday evening, welcoming Washington-Liberty to J. Wallace Bolding Stadium. The Atoms came out with some fire playing the Generals tough throughout most of the first half. The generals held a 17-3 lead in the second quarter with the Atoms holding them to a punt on fourth down. However, the Generals had different plans with a fake punt to gain a first down. The Generals would score three plays later and run away from the Atoms in the second half to secure the win. The Atoms play host to district for Hayfield Friday evening.

Boys and Girls Cross Country had the week off but return to the course Wednesday at Mason District Park.

Atoms Boosters Concession Stand Help

Attention Parents! Volunteers are needed to sell concessions at games throughout the year, starting with fall sports Football and Volleyball. We welcome any and all parents to volunteer but when parents of a particular sport work a game, a portion of concessions sales directly benefit that team. If you are not able to help directly at home games, there are many ways you can get involved with the Atoms Athletics Boosters by attending our monthly meetings or being a team liaison. Thank you for your support for Atom’s Athletics!

For questions about concession stand sign ups, contact Odessa Murray.

Annandale Community Insider - September 1

PTSA2 months 2 weeks ago

Annandale Students, Parents, and Community:

Happy Labor Day weekend! I hope you’re enjoying this long weekend and finding time to relax. I spent most of the weekend hanging out with my mom and dad who were in town from Ohio.

As we embark on another school year, I want to highlight the incredible academic success of our students. Since mid-August, our teachers and staff have been reviewing data that showcases the progress we’ve made, and we've heard firsthand from students and families about the positive impact of our work. I encourage you to read our 2023-24 End-of-Year Report that highlights our students’ academic achievements.

Research shows that when students feel connected to their school, they are more likely to excel academically. One of the most effective ways we foster these connections is through the diverse clubs and activities we offer. At our upcoming Clubs & Activities Fair on Tuesday, September 3, during W4, students will have an opportunity to explore the wide range of extracurricular activities available at Annandale. By getting involved, students not only pursue their interests but also build relationships that support their academic and personal growth. Our Activities Department is dedicated to increasing student involvement, and we encourage all students to take full advantage of the opportunities to connect and thrive. For a list of clubs currently offered at Annandale, visit this website.

Our commitment to connecting with students, both in and out of the classroom, has made the start of this school year smooth and successful. Our staff’s dedication to fostering these relationships and setting clear expectations has been evident in every class and hallway transition.

To ensure that all students can fully benefit from the learning opportunities in our classrooms, we have reinforced with students that our Atoms Agreement of "Determination" means we show up on time. In addition, we will once again rely on our Start on Time program. In this building-wide initiative, our entire team—teachers, counselors, administrators, coaches, and staff—will be working together to ensure that students make it to class on time.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Important Information

Monitoring Bathrooms: Schools across Fairfax County and the nation have faced alarming incidents related to drug use and overdoses, including the use of substances like fentanyl. The bathrooms, being private areas, are unfortunately susceptible to such illicit activities. Students who are loitering in the school bathrooms with other students multiple times during the school day will be verbally warned, issued a bathroom loitering letter and a parent conference will be held with the administrator.

Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE: Want to get ahead of the back-to-school forms and checklists? Make sure you have a SIS ParentVUE account for your family and log in to find forms and updates. Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE by using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices. Need help creating a SIS ParentVUE account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.

Update Your Student’s Immunizations and Records: Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to your school’s front office. Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.

Course Change Process: Our counselors will continue to make modifications to student schedules that have errors. Students seeking a schedule change need to complete the Schedule Change Request Form located in Student Services. This form will only be available from August 25-September 6. Counselors will prioritize these requests based on student need and will contact students as necessary.  Written parent permission will be required for changes resulting in a different diploma type or moving down a level of rigor.  Please reach out to your student’s counselor or Erin Crowley if you have any questions.

Monitor Your Student’s Online Activity: FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours. Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Reporting Student Attendance: In order for our students to get the most out of their education, they must be in school and on time to class every day. Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half of the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. If your student must be absent from school, please inform the school. The attendance phone number is 703-642-4151.

In addition, parents now have the option to submit full-day absences through ParentVUE. Parent instructions are available on the Attendance page.

Safety Drills During the School Year: Keeping students and staff safe is a priority at Annandale High School. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including fire and lockdown drills, each year.

Next week, we will conduct our first lockdown drill of the school year. Your student may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your student about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Here are some helpful tips for families to use to support their students before and after school lockdown drills. Working together, we create a safe, secure environment for students to learn and grow in our schools.

Free Breakfast and Lunch for Every Student! We're excited to announce that all Annandale students will receive free breakfast and lunch every day of the school year, thanks to the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. This USDA program ensures that every student, regardless of their family's income level, can enjoy nutritious meals at no cost. The meal service will remain the same as other schools, with a la carte items available for purchase.

Note: Even though all students receive free meals, families who may qualify for additional benefits, such as fee waivers for lab fees, summer school tuition, and more, should still complete the Consent to Share form. Visit FCPS Free and Reduced Priced Meals website for more information.

Cell Phone Policy: Phones and accessories must be silenced and put away during all instructional periods. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. Teachers may allow usage of cell phone for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool, however one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs.

If you have an emergency and need to be in touch with your student, please contact the front office. Complete information can be found in the Student Rights & Responsibilities document.

GO ATOMS!!! Atoms Athletics Recap

Fall Opening Week Recap:

Golf's lone match of the week was canceled due to the heat but we will recap a couple matches that have occurred already. The Atoms opened up in the National District Kickoff Tournament on August 12, where Carter Demers finished second overall with an 80! The Atoms played Hayfield on August 21 and hung tough against a good Hayfield, falling short by nine strokes. The Atoms were highlighted by Sophia Sewall with a nine hole score of 44, which qualifies her for the Girls Zone Qualifier in October. The Atoms tee it up Wednesday vs Lewis at Greendale.

Girls Volleyball hit the road for their first two games of the year Monday and Tuesday. The varsity team traveled to Unity Reed and took care of business in three sets to notch their first W of the season. A quick turn around required another trip but a short one to Falls Church Tuesday evening. The Atoms played well but the Jaguars were a little too much, winning in three. The freshman and JV Atoms both lost 2-0 but both teams played hard and made the Jaguars earn it. The Atoms set it up Thursday evening for their home opener vs Hayfield.

Boys Volleyball got their inaugural season underway with their first home game vs rival Falls Church. It was an exciting back and forth game with the Atoms taking the first set over the Jaguars. Sets two, three, and four were more of the same back and forth but unfortunately went the way of the Jaguars to get the 3-1 win over the Atoms. The Atoms return to the court when they travel to Justice for a 5:45pm tilt with Hayfield, Thursday evening.

Field Hockey got their season underway with a 2-0 win over a talented McLean team. The Atoms controlled the game throughout and survived a couple close calls by the Highlanders but goals by Callia Uviedo and Ripley Hotaling was the difference. The Atoms host their home opener Thursday evening when they welcome Marshall to campus.

Football had to wait a day to get their first game of the season in the books. Friday evening storms caused the game to be pushed to Friday afternoon. The Atoms came out and showed first game jitters as they fumbled on three of their first four possessions that allowed the Marshall Statesman to set the tone of the game. The Statesmen turned each of those turnovers into touchdowns and cruised the to win over the Atoms. The Atoms showed grit and toughness and look to get back on track as they host Washington-Liberty for their home opener Friday evening at 7:00pm.

Boys and Girls Cross Country had their meet of the season on Tuesday at Mason District Park. It was a good showing for both teams in their first run of the season. The Atoms displayed a great team run for both programs as they look to get their legs under them in the early part of the season to make a run in the National District Championship Meet in October.

  • ALL students will be asked to show their ID or SIS account for entry into the game.
  • No backpacks or other bags will be allowed in the stadium.  (Students and Adults)
  • No outside food or drinks are allowed. The concession stand will be open.
  • Students must plan to have their rides waiting for them at 9:30 pm.
  • The purpose for attending our football games is to watch the game, cheerleaders, band and dance team.
  • We cheer for Annandale and not against our opponent. All cheers should be positive.
  • Students planning to attend a game need to leave campus upon school dismissal and return to cheer on the Atoms.
  • All students must pre-arrange for transportation and plan to leave immediately after the game.
  • Students are expected to be in the stands and not hanging out by the concession stand, bathrooms or other areas; all elementary-aged children must always be supervised by an adult.

  • Anyone who leaves may not re-enter, even with a ticket stub or pass.
  • Whistles and similar noisemakers are prohibited.

Annandale Community Insider - Special Labor Day Weekend Edition!

PTSA2 months 3 weeks ago

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

Labor Day signals the unofficial end of summer and offers a moment to celebrate the hard work that the holiday honors. For many, it’s a day of rest and relaxation. This extended holiday weekend also provides an opportunity to share the results of the hard work of our students, staff, and community. So, as you gather with neighbors at the pool or around the grill, we encourage you to share, as well.

During the 2023-24 school year, Annandale High School achieved remarkable academic success, standing out as a leader in Virginia. Our reading scores soared to 95%, a significant increase from the previous year’s 91%, while the state average dipped slightly from 85% to 84%. In math, our students also excelled, achieving a 90% average compared to the state’s 84%. In addition, our science scores increased 9% in just one year. I encourage you to read all about our incredible success in our End-of-Year Report.

These outstanding results reflect our school's unwavering commitment to academic excellence and the effectiveness of our collaborative efforts to support and elevate student learning. In fact, Annandale High School is the only high school in Virginia to be recognized as a Model Professional Learning Community at Work®. This honor underscores the hard work and dedication of our staff, who have embraced the challenge of rethinking and reshaping our educational practices.

It is clear that our growth has been fueled by a shared vision of what our school can be - a place where learning is at the heart of everything we do, collaboration is the norm, and results are celebrated and used to drive further improvement. As we move forward, we are more committed than ever to continuing this journey of growth and excellence, knowing that the best is yet to come.

Sincerely,

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Annandale Community Insider - August 25

PTSA2 months 3 weeks ago

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

We are thrilled to kick off the 2024-25 school year on such a positive note! It was wonderful to see our students back in the building, settling into their new schedules and routines with the guidance of our returning students and dedicated staff.

This week, during W4, students spent valuable time getting to know one another and connecting with their teachers. We also introduced our Atoms Community Agreements, focusing on the core values of Empathy, Determination, and Safety. As we emphasized during the lesson, “Being an Annandale Atom means that each of us plays a vital role in our school community.” The importance of our collective responsibility was clear in the engagement and enthusiasm I observed as I walked through the halls during W4.

Next week, we will continue to explore our Atoms Agreements in W4, delving deeper into these guiding principles. Here is a link to our Atoms Agreements matrix, which outlines all of our behavior expectations. We will keep reinforcing these values with our students to support their growth and success at Annandale and beyond.

As I visited classrooms throughout the week, I was struck by how our teachers consistently communicated that the students they teach are as important—if not more important—than the subjects they teach. I witnessed the excitement in students as they engaged with both the curriculum and the various community-building activities taking place in their classes. These relationships form the foundation of the learning journey our students will embark on this year and are essential to the strong, positive school culture we cherish at Annandale. We're off to a fantastic start!

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Important Information

Supporting Students Getting to Class On-Time: As part of our commitment to ensure our students are accessing high quality instruction and arriving to all their classes on time, every day, AHS will be implementing our Start on Time tardy sweep stations between every class transition starting Monday, August 26. Students who are still in the hallways after the late bell will be escorted to their classes, where teachers will update the attendance accordingly. If students are arriving late to school with a note from a parent/guardian to explain their tardiness, they should report to the Attendance Office.

In the coming weeks we will conduct our first lockdown drill of the school year.

Academy Students: Academy students will receive a badge this week to be attached to their backpack. It will specify their specific departure and return times as well as which lunch they should eat (when applicable). Academy students waiting to take the bus and returning prior to their next class should report to the auditorium until further notice.

Student Parking: Parking applications may be picked up in the Security Office, Room 114. Both the “Parking Agreement” and “Parking Application” forms must be turned into the Main Office by Monday, August 26. Parking permits will be issued and money will be collected during all lunches in the cafeteria on Tuesday, August 27. The parking fee of $200.00 will be collected when the parking permits are distributed. Students must have a parking pass to park in AHS student parking spaces beginning Tuesday, September 3rd. If you have any questions, please email Phillip Taylor. Note: All financial obligations must be cleared before you may receive a parking permit.

Annandale Pyramid Math Kickoff: A Collaborative Journey

PTSA2 months 4 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Community:

I am excited to share that the Annandale Pyramid Math Teachers recently came together to align and strengthen math instruction from kindergarten through 12th grade. After two years of dedicated work, including extensive observations of math instruction across our schools, pyramid principals and math leaders have crafted a unified vision statement to guide this work:

In the Annandale Pyramid, mathematics teaching and learning focuses on developing an understanding of concepts and procedures through problem-solving, reasoning, and discourse.

Our Pyramid Math Kickoff provided every math teacher in our pyramid (Braddock ES, Weyanoke ES, Annandale Terrace ES Columbia ES, Bren Mar Park ES, North Springfield ES, Holmes MS, Poe MS, and Annandale HS) the opportunity to plan the first unit of the year together. They also were able to attend sessions tailored to their interests, with topics ranging from lesson planning and building a classroom community, to increasing student discourse and ensuring that every student can access mathematics.

The feedback from these sessions was overwhelmingly positive. Here are just a few reflections from our educators:

  • “I got goosebumps hearing the references to the FCPS Vision of Excellence in Mathematics. I truly believe that the work we launched today and the work I know we will continue to do throughout the year is going to help students.”
  • "Thanks for a great learning session! Do this again with upcoming content."
  • "It was great to be around new faces and get a better understanding of how to plan for student-centered discourse."
  • "I loved this! It was wonderful to connect with former colleagues and align our thinking as a pyramid."
  • "The unpacking portion was really helpful. It’s nice to get takeaways from colleagues outside of my school team."
  • "This was great! Thanks for a quick and informative PD!"

I am proud of the collaborative spirit that has brought us this far and excited about the path ahead. Together, as a pyramid, we are not just teaching math—we are building a strong foundation for our students' success.

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Annandale Community Insider - First Day of School

PTSA3 months ago

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

The 2024-25 school year is off to a great start! The joy of having all of our students back in the building was evident on the faces of our staff and students! Annandale staff members, along with our cheerleaders and marching band, enthusiastically welcomed our students into the building. Seeing teachers lead activities throughout the day to help students start to build relationships and feel connected as well as get them excited about course content was energizing.

You can check out the amazing things happening throughout the campus via Twitter by searching the hashtag #AtomNation.

Building relationships is one of our priorities. One of the ways we do this is through our W4 advisory period. The purpose of W4 is to build relationships, create community, clarify expectations, and support students’ social and emotional needs. Through W4 this morning, we distributed laptops and ensured students were able to log in. Throughout the week, we will be taking time to help students learn new technology and troubleshoot issues. We will also share our expectations and our schoolwide Atoms Agreements of Empathy, Determination and Safety. Students and teachers will discuss how these ideas help us create a community in which we work and learn together.

Transportation went smoothly this morning and we worked through a number of issues this afternoon. For parents who drop off their student in the morning (aka Kiss and Ride), we ask that you do so no later than 8:00am. This will alleviate congestion and ensure your student is able to get to their first block class on time - by 8:10am.

If you have any questions, concerns, compliments, or observations, please let me know. You can also contact your student’s teacher, counselor, or administrator. Our contact information is on the school website.

We hope everyone has a great school year!

Shawn DeRose, Principal

2024-25 Bell Schedule

Tomorrow we will be following our normal bell schedule for the 2024-25 school year. See below for the detailed schedule. You can also click here for the red/white day calendar and a complete list of alternative bell schedules at Annandale High School.

Important Information

Schedule Change Requests: Our Student Services team is working hard to make sure our students have accurate schedules. We recognize that some students will want to request changes to their schedule. At this time, we are only making schedule changes for the following reasons:

  • A student does not have a complete schedule or is missing a core class required for graduation.
  • A student was registered for a course that they have already successfully passed. The schedule does not reflect a grade change or summer school course that was successfully passed.

If your student has one of the reasons listed above, they should go to Student Services during the class period in which the error occurs. Requests to change schedules based on preference will be considered at a later date. Details on this process will be provided in the coming weeks. Please reach out to Erin Crowley, or your student’s counselor, if you have any questions.

Student Attendance: In order for our students to get the most out of their education, they must be in school and on time to class every day. Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half of the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. If your student must be absent from school, please inform the school. The attendance phone number is 703-642-4151.

In addition, parents will have the option to submit full-day absences through ParentVUE. Parent instructions are available on the Attendance page. The Parent Support Request page now includes under Application “SIS Parent” | Inquiry “Report Absences” option.

1st Day of School Logistics

Student Schedules: All students and parents should now have access to class schedules in SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE. SIS (Student Information System) is the application to see attendance, class performance, and demographic data. In addition, students will receive a hard copy of their schedule when they report to their advisory class (W4) tomorrow morning. If a student forgets or does not know their W4 class, staff members will be stationed in the hallways to assist.

Finding Classes: Throughout the year, and especially during the first week of school, all staff members will be in the hallways supporting students during each transition. We realize that a little extra time may be needed as students learn or get reacquainted with the school building. They will get the hang of their new routine sooner than they think and we are all here to help!

Student Laptop Distribution: We are excited to share that all students who turned in their school-issued computers last year will be issued brand new Chromebooks in their W4 class on the first day of school, August 19. The first day of school will feature a special schedule with all students reporting to their W4 class at the beginning of the school day to receive their laptop.

If your student wishes to use a family-owned device, please ensure the device meets the required specifications. Then, log into your ParentVUE account and select “Opt-out of FCPS device.” This will ensure that your student is not responsible for an FCPS device.

Student Lockers: Student lockers will be available by request only beginning on Tuesday, September 3. Students will receive information about how to request a locker during W4.

Academy Students: Students taking an Academy course during W4 (mid-day on White Days) should report to the Auditorium during 4th period (W4) when they arrive at school on Monday morning in order to receive their laptop.

All Academy students will be provided an orientation presentation at 9:00am on Monday in the Auditorium during R1. Students will not attend their academy classes until August 20. Students will receive an email with their academy shuttle information and other details.

Starting August 20, when returning from their Travel Period (as indicated on their schedule), students taking Academy courses should report to the Auditorium during the lunch block (R5/W6) where they will eat D Lunch. During all other periods, Academy Students returning to school should report to T-11. Students should be in their designated location during their Travel Periods. If students have a class after returning from the Academy, they should report to the Attendance Office for a pass to class.

1st Day of School Bell Schedule: Students will report to their 4th period or W4 class to pick up their laptop and receive a hard copy of their student schedule. See detailed schedule.

Transportation Information

Student Bus Route Assignments: FCPS Office of Transportation Services emailed student bus route assignments last week. Parents should have received an email and text message to check their ParentVue accounts for transportation information. Please note that the provided times are estimates and that buses may be delayed due to weather, traffic conditions, and a national and regional driver shortage. Please check the Here Comes the Bus app or FCPS School Bus Delays website for potential delays. Students are expected to be at their bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. A double back route assignment may require your bus schedule to be adjusted earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Student Parking: This year, students will have the opportunity to purchase parking permits to park on the Annandale campus. Information about how to purchase a parking permit for the 2024-25 school year will be shared soon after the school year begins. In the meantime, students can park in any spaces from the last speed bump, the lot near the track and the first two rows of Ossian Park until permits are issued. If you have any questions, please email Phillip Taylor, Safety and Security Specialist.

Kiss & Ride: Student drop off/pick up (aka Kiss & Ride) is conducted at the main entrance (door #1). Parents should drop off their student(s) beginning at 7:45am. Students are dismissed from school at 2:55pm. If you have any questions, please email Phillip Taylor, Safety and Security Specialist.

Parent To-Do Checklist

Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE: Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents should receive an activation code when they register their student. Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Need help creating a SIS ParentVUE account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.

Update Your Students’ Information Online: FCPS is excited to announce that parents can now update student information online using the Online Verification Update Packet. Parents can conveniently update phone numbers, emergency contacts, health conditions, and immunization dates for students in grades K-12. Accessible through SIS ParentVUE, the online update feature streamlines registration for parents and staff.

Join the PTSA: The Annandale High School PTSA is committed to helping our students and community. Please consider joining for the 2024-2025 school year by filling out the online Membership Form. For more information about membership visit the Annandale PTSA website.

Have a Rising Senior? Meningococcal Vaccine Reminder: The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into one of its schools. All students in grade 12 are required to have been immunized with one dose of the Meningococcal Vaccine given at the age of 16 or older. Please review the immunization requirements here. Proof of immunization must be submitted to the school. These documents need to be returned prior to the start of the 2024-25 school year.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

It was great to welcome students, parents and families into the building yesterday at our New Student Orientation & Open House. We are eagerly anticipating the our students' return to the building on Monday morning!

When students arrive, they will report directly to their advisory class. This advisory period, which we refer to as W4, serves as a platform for building relationships, creating community, clarifying expectations, and sharing and cultivating our values. During W4 on Monday, students will receive their laptop and a hard copy of their schedule. Student schedules are also viewable in SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE. For more information about obtaining a ParentVue account, please click here to access support on the FCPS website.

Below you will find detailed information about the first day of school, transportation, and other important back to school information. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Finally, I would like to extend a heartfelt appreciation to our PTSA for graciously hosting the Welcome Back Breakfast for our staff on Thursday. This is just one of the many examples of the ways they support Atom Nation. Please consider joining for the 2024-2025 school year by filling out the online Membership Form. For more information about membership visit the Annandale PTSA website.

Join the Annandale PTSA!

Thank you to the Annandale High School PTSA for sponsoring breakfast for staff this past Thursday! The Annandale PTSA is committed to helping our students and community. Together, we sponsor many programs and activities for our students, parents, and staff, including teacher grants, community outreach events, AHS Food Pantry, All Night Grad Celebration, Senior Scholarships, and more!

Please consider joining for the 2024-2025 school year by filling out the online Membership Form. For more information about membership visit the Annandale PTSA website.

1st Day of School Logistics

Student Schedules: All students and parents should now have access to class schedules in SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE. SIS (Student Information System) is the application to see attendance, class performance, and demographic data. In addition, students will receive a hard copy of their schedule when they report to their advisory class (W4) on Monday morning.

Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE by using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices. Need help creating a SIS ParentVUE account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.

For more information on this requirement, visit this FCPS website.

Bell Schedule: The bell schedule for the 2024-2025 school year is the same as last year. See below for the detailed schedule. Click here for the red/white day calendar and a complete list of alternative bell schedules at Annandale High School.

Emergency Care Form, Health Information Form and Medications: The goal of the health room is to ensure your student experiences a healthy and safe school year. To proactively plan, we ask that parents/guardians complete the Online/Verification Update packet in SIS ParentVUE to include emergency contact information, Health Information Forms, and Emergency Care Forms. The Online Verification Update (OVU) packet allows parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts, and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations). Please note: only the enrolling parent will be able to access the OVU. More information can be found on the FCPS website.

Digital Consent Now Available Online: Parents can now log in to the Parental Digital Consent (PDC) system using your SIS ParentVUE credentials to complete consent forms assigned to your child. Digital Resources Consent will be available starting August 7. Forms available include School Counseling Opt-Out, SEL Screener Opt-Out, and more.

Ten AHS Students Participate in Educational Travel Program: Ten students at Annandale High School had the opportunity to travel to six different countries with the Center for International Education and Exchange (CIEE) program.

AHS Students & Teachers Travel for Exchange Program: This summer, ESOL Coach, Meredith Hedrick and Spanish Teacher, Miles Meijer traveled to Madrid, Spain, with the Center for International Education and Exchange language and culture program. Miles was a program leader who supported students and led groups on cultural activities and excursions. Meredith participated in a teacher site visit and joined the students in Spanish language classes and excursions. We can’t wait to hear about their experiences when they return to school.

Annandale Senior Shares Exchange Experience with Superintendent: Annandale senior, Rawan Bin Humam, connected with Superintendent Michelle Reid at the Multilingual Learner Summit this past Thursday to share her experience studying with the Center for International Education and Exchange for their Entrepreneurship program in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Reid, a German speaker, shared her connection with Rawan.

Annandale Hosts Multilingual Learner Summit: This past Thursday, Annandale High School proudly hosted the "Our Voices, Our Future: Multilingual Learners Summit," an evening dedicated to empowering our multilingual students and their families. The event provided attendees the opportunity to explore a table fair, showcasing an array of opportunities within FCPS and the broader community that support pathways to graduation and future careers.

A highlight of the evening was the inspiring keynote delivered by Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya, who shared a powerful message on the strength of community and resilience. Following the keynote, a dynamic student panel engaged in an insightful dialogue with Dr. Zelaya, fostering a space for meaningful connection and shared experiences. The summit successfully cultivated an environment of mutual support and deeper understanding, reinforcing Annandale's commitment to embracing the diverse voices that shape our community.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

We have accomplished incredible things at Annandale these past few years. None of which would be possible without our amazing staff, who collaborate every day to meet our students’ needs. I am always proud to share with prospective candidates that Annandale can be challenging, yet incredibly rewarding, and when you join our work, you will grow and make an impact.

To that end, I would like to celebrate several staff members who have been promoted or will be moving into positions that will allow them to continue to amplify their impact throughout FCPS and beyond. While their leaving is a loss for Annandale, I know they will do great things in their new positions. Please join me in congratulating them and wishing them well in their new positions.

As always, please reach out with questions and Go Atoms!

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Annandale Community Insider - August 4

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

I would like to thank the parents and students who stopped by Chick-fil-A Annandale this past Thursday to learn about the magic that is happening at Annandale High School. I enjoyed your insightful questions and hearing the stories about your school experience. This is one of several community events we will be hosting as we prepare to welcome students back to school. Our next event is this Wednesday, August 7. In the morning, I will be at Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington from 8:30-9:30am and again that afternoon from 4:00-5:00pm. Later that evening, I will be at the Wedgewood Community Center at Wedgewood Apartments from 6:30-7:30pm. I look forward to seeing you there!

We achieve incredible things here in Atom Nation and we know that the only way we can do this is when staff, students, families, and the community work in partnership. Moreover, research shows that one of the most impactful things parents can do to support their students’ academic success is to talk to them about their school experience. Hopefully, this newsletter serves as a conversation starter between you and your student.

Another indicator of a student's success is their connection to school and sports are one way we help students feel connection and belonging. It is well documented that students who participate in athletics in high school perform better academically than their peers.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of fall sports, which include cheer, cross-country, football, field hockey, golf, and volleyball. We have an incredible coaching staff that is committed to ensuring we are working together to support every student, every day both on and off the field. No experience is necessary. All are welcome, so come try out! To participate, students need to complete a VHSL physical form and register online to play. See tryout information below.

Looking ahead, I am excited to welcome all of you on Thursday, August 15 to our Freshmen & New Student Orientation from 1:30-3:30pm, as well as our Open House for all students from 3:30-4:30pm. Additionally, on this day, students and families can access schedules in StudentVUE and ParentVUE starting at 6:00am.

Finally, below you will find a Parent To-Do List with important items that will ensure your student is ready to go on August 19. Enjoy your last days of summer break, Atom Nation. I look forward to seeing you all soon. As always, please reach out with any questions.

Bell Schedule: The bell schedule for the 2024-2025 school year is the same as last year. See below for the detailed schedule. Click here for the red/white day calendar and a complete list of alternative bell schedules at Annandale High School.

Student Schedules: Beginning Thursday, August 15 at 6:00am, all students and parents will have access to class schedules in SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE. SIS (Student Information System) is the application to see attendance, class performance, and demographic data. If you have any questions, please email Esther Amenyah, Administrative Assistant.

Student Laptops: We are excited to share that all students who turned in their school-issued computers last year will be issued brand new Chromebooks in their W4 class on the first day of school, August 19.

Student Lockers: Student lockers will be available by request only beginning on Tuesday, September 3. Students will receive information about how to request a locker during W4.

Awesome Atoms!

Marching Atoms Off on the Right (er … Left) Foot! Band camp began Tuesday morning at 8am as upperclassmen welcomed freshmen and new members with games, music, and PRIDE! Two-thirds of the band have never marched before, but they are already ahead of the curve. Each day begins with marching fundamentals, then progresses to learning the drill for our 2024 show, “The Art of Revolution.” The show features favorite musical selections from Les Mis, Twisted Sister, Elton John, and Dvorak’s “New World Symphony.” After lunch, the band splits into sections to learn music with professional coaches. Finally, the band comes together for group rehearsal and ends the day with student awards for service to others, leadership, most improved, and outstanding achievement.

Band camp continues with full days next week, 8am-6pm; and then the following week from 3:30pm-6pm. Next Sunday, August 11, the Marching Atoms travel to the Richmond Raceway to perform “God Bless America” on the infield at the start of the NASCAR Cup Series “Cookout 400.” Be sure to tune in!

Annandale High School Wrestling Camp: Annandale High School hosted a wrestling camp for all ages, where attendees spent time developing skills in all three styles of wrestling, dedicating one style to each of the first three days. In addition to technique training and engaging in various games, the last two days of camp featured a takedown tournament and an individually bracketed tournament, providing campers with competitive and practical experience.

Congrats Annandale Summer School Graduates! Congratulations to our summer school students who recently graduated at West Springfield High School on Tuesday, July 31.
