Atom Nation

The Atoms head into spring break with several programs showing growth and improvements and several looking prepared to breakout and make runs at district championships! We encourage everyone to get your Atoms Booster pass and don't miss the action! We hope that everyone has a safe, happy spring break and we can't wait to see you when we return to actions April 1!

GO ATOMS!!! Atoms Weekly Recap

Here is a quick recap of first week of spring sports

Girls Soccer was back in action with two games before the break. The Atoms welcomed the Bulldogs of Westfield Tuesday evening and held a 2-1 lead late into the second half before the Bulldogs were able to squeeze a goal in with five to play. The game ended in a 2-2 after OT. The Atoms didn't have long to wait before their game as they hosted Woodbridge Wednesday. The Atoms played well but couldn't hold the Vikings from scoring twice to take the game 2-0. The Atoms are off until their district opener at Falls Church, April 4.

Boys Soccer didn't get in the win column but they didn't end up of loss column either this week. The Atoms traveled to Westfield and battled the Bulldogs to a 2-2 tie in a great competitive game. Thursday night saw the Atoms host Osbourn Park and hold a 2-1 advantage until the final minutes of the game when a PK was the dagger to make it 2-2. OT was a competitive and saw the game end just the way it started, tied. The Atoms return to the field April 4 when they host Falls Church.

Softball was in action twice this week vs district foes Hayfield and Justice. The Atoms played a tough Hayfield team, holding an 11-10 lead into the 5th inning and tie game at 11 into the 7th. The Hawks were able to scratch a couple runs across in the 7th to win an exciting game 15-12. The Atoms returned to the field at Justice Thursday night and ran away from the Wolves winning convincingly 18-2! The Atoms looks to make it two in a row when they return after the break vs Oakton on April 3.

Baseball had two more district games before the break. Game 1 of the week saw the Atoms take an early lead vs Hayfield before the Hawks' bats got hot and flew away from the Atoms in the later innings. Game 2 required the Atoms to travel to the Den of Justice. It was an exciting back and forth game that saw the Atoms prevail 7-6 over the Wolves! The Atoms have a few games over the break (all at Annandale) and return to district play April 2 vs Lewis.

Boys Tennis had a busy week with three matches vs district opponents. The Atoms started the week with a dominating 8-1 win over Justice! The Atoms were solid in every match but unfortunately could keep the momentum as they fell to Lewis the next day 3-6. The Atoms finished the week off with state contenders TJ but the growth and development of the team is evident as they head into spring break. Next up Edison April 3.

Girls Tennis went into spring break with three matches. The young Atoms continue to played hard each match but their youth is still evident at this point in the season. They fell in all three matches to Justice, Lewis, and TJ but their determination to get better continues to shine through and look to make big strides after the break. They return to the court April 3 vs Edison.

Boys Lacrosse hit the field for three games before the break. The Atoms hosted Wakefield Monday and played well but fell short to the Warriors to open the week. The Atoms traveled to Mt. Vernon for their first district game and came away the win to start the season off 1-0. The Atoms ended the week vs South Lakes. The Seahawks ran away from the Atoms but the improvements that started last year continue to show! The Atoms look to continue that growth when they return after the break vs district rival Falls Church.

Girls Lacrosse had one game this week versus a talented South Lakes team. The Seahawks flexed early and ran away from the Atoms. The Atoms played hard and look to build off the growth they've shown this year when they return to the field for their district opener vs Falls Church.

Outdoor Track & Field had their second meet of the season at Justice. The Atoms continue to shine on the track as several more athletes qualified for the district and region meets with personal best times. The Atoms get back at if after the break with their third meet at Lewis.

Annandale Community Insider - March 17

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

At Annandale, we support student academic success not only in the classroom, but through our PRIDE Time Intervention and our After School Academic Program (ASAP). Last week, we once again reviewed student data and adjusted assignments for PRIDE Time and ASAP. These adjustments ensure that our interventions remain responsive and effective, fostering an environment where every student can thrive.

Looking forward, now that academic advising is nearly done, we are hard at work on our master schedule for next year with input from administrators, instructional coaches, and department chairs. In addition, we have started hiring for the upcoming school year and have found some incredible candidates who will enrich our work as a school in the years to come.

Our Instructional Council and CT Leads recently came together to examine our instructional focus and the progress we have made as a building towards our priorities of relationships and support, high quality instruction, and strong collaboration. It is always exciting to reflect on how we have grown and discuss how we can continue to get better as a school. More importantly, this work will shape our instructional focus for next year, which we will share with students, staff and the community in the coming months.

As Spring Break approaches, we will continue our tradition of allowing everyone to relax and refresh over the spring holiday. Teachers should not be assigning work over spring break with the exception of long term assignments that happen to span over the break. Furthermore, to ease the transition back into academic routines, there will be no assessments the first two days back after break.

Finally, tomorrow, Annandale parents/guardians will receive an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school. Please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. I value your feedback!

Have a great week and a safe Spring Break, Atom Nation! As always, reach out with any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Music In Our Schools Month

March is Music in our Schools Month. We recognize the importance of music education for all students and the important role of music education in schools. To celebrate, we wanted to share some updates from our Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and Guitar programs.

Annandale Music Students Audition for All-Virginia Band & Orchestra: On February 24, several hundred select band and orchestra students from throughout Virginia traveled to JMU to audition for the All-Virginia band and orchestra. Our very own Tyler Perez competed against 32 other euphonium players to win a coveted spot in the All-Virginia concert band, ranking #7 in the state. Tyler will participate in rehearsals and performances in Richmond, April 18-20. Congratulations Tyler!

Annandale Choirs Earn High Marks at State Choral Assessments: Annandale High School proudly announces exceptional results from the State Choral Assessments at Annandale UMC. Our talented choral groups have excelled, with ten Superior and two Excellent ratings in concert performances, showcasing their outstanding musical abilities. In the challenging sight-reading component, our ensembles continued to impress, achieving three Superior and one Excellent ratings. These achievements highlight the dedication, hard work, and musical excellence of our students and educators. We commend their efforts and celebrate the vibrant musical spirit within our school community.

AHS Students Form Interdisciplinary Jazz Ensemble: The Annandale Bands have much to celebrate this Spring. As you may have seen in the A-Blast, several band students have come together on their own to form an interdisciplinary Jazz ensemble led by senior trombonist Anthony Rodriguez. Members of the band, orchestra, chorus, and IB Music class rehearse every Tuesday and Thursday after school as they prepare for their debut performance on May 14 as part of the Band spring concert. Anthony has written custom warm-ups and arrangements for the Jazz ensemble, and leads rehearsals like a veteran teacher!

Annandale Band Students Earn High Ratings in District Assessment: Since our return from winter break the Annandale Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble have been diligently rehearsing and preparing for District Ten concert assessment. This process is a summative experience of preparing the most challenging concert repertoire against state standards that are evaluated by three professional judges. Both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble earned “Excellent” ratings in all categories of performance. The Symphonic Band, composed mostly of freshman and sophomores (including 6 beginners), even earned a “Superior” rating in sight-reading. After a successful assessment experience, the bands now turn their attention to preparing the Spring concert, marching band mini-camp, and playing for graduation.

Orchestra Assessment Success! Congratulations to Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras on their outstanding professionalism and performances at Assessment! Both ensembles walked away with Superior ratings from all judges with A’s (highest marks) in every category. We are so proud of their hard work and the growth all of the groups have shown over this concert cycle! Thank you to the staff for their support and sharing their spaces with us to make this event happen for District X.

Guitar Concert a Success! The AHS Guitar Ensemble celebrated the first guitar concert at AHS in a decade. The guitar students are now busy preparing for a spring concert and Assessment this May. Six students from the AHS Guitar program were selected to perform with the VGDA North Region Honors Guitar Ensemble. Congratulations to Parikshit, Gabriel Olivares-Tapia, Keegan Cano, Emily Camacho, Sibyl Dauer and Marina Bonilla-Gomez.

March 19 - NOVA Virtual Sessions for Seniors and Their Families: Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is offering virtual information and application sessions. Information sessions will provide an overview of NOVA and the opportunities, services, and resources designed to connect high school seniors to the NOVA Nighthawk Community. An information session will be held Tuesday, March 19, at 4:30pm and a virtual application workshop will be held Tuesday, April 30, at 7:00pm. Sessions are open to all FCPS seniors and their families. For questions, email [email protected] or call 703-323-3000.

FAFSA Updates for Seniors and Families: There have been several technological challenges with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) since its launch on December 31, 2023. The latest news is that colleges will not get FAFSA summaries from the U.S. Department of Education until mid-March at the earliest. As a result, colleges won’t be able to give students financial aid award letters based on their FAFSA information until late April to May, at best. Students who applied to a college that uses the CSS Profile may receive financial aid information sooner.

Different media outlets are reporting a growing list of colleges that will push back deadlines for students to accept offers of admission into May and even June. The American Council on Education has a database of colleges and universities that have extended their deadline to commit to enroll. We recommend that all information obtained by a secondary source be confirmed directly with the college or university. If you need assistance, please contact Mr. Yeagley in our College and Career Center or your student’s counselor.

College & Career Planning Google Site: Check out the College & Career Planning Google site, which provides up-to-date information on the college application process; college representative visits; financial aid and FAFSA/VASA workshops; military options; information on apprenticeships; as well as resources for finding a job. The website also provides contact information for our School Counselors, as well as our College and Career Specialist.

Thursday College Application Workshops: Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm in Room 90 (near the Cafeteria), Counselors and AVID students will be assisting students with various topics: Making a College List; Transcript Request Form; Common App; Recommendation Requests. Students are welcome to drop in with questions about any aspect of the process.

Atom Nation

Week 1 of the spring season is in the books and if this week is a preview of what is to come for the season, then you better make sure you're in attendance! A lot of exciting action was on display this week so make sure to get your reduced Atoms pass and see it all in person! Make sure to read through the newsletter to see what's upcoming for Annandale Athletics!

GO ATOMS!!! Atoms Weekly Recap

Here is a quick recap of first week of spring sports

Girls Soccer got the season started off with an impressive 3-2 win over Meridian Tuesday evening. It was a hard fought back and forth game that saw great passing and skills demonstrated by the Atoms! Their second game of the week saw a competitive game versus a talented Washington-Liberty team that eventually scored a goal in the final 10 minutes on the Atoms to come away with a 2-1. The Atoms play at home again on Tuesday vs Westfield.

Boys Soccer didn't come away with a win in their two games but the team showed resilience and why they could be a force to be reckoned with this year. The first game saw the Atoms fall in a close one versus Colonial Forge 1-0 with a controversial call in the final minutes that didn't go the Atoms way. The Atoms turned around and played a tough W-L team but fell short 2-1. The Atoms take the field by traveling to Westfield on Tuesday.

Softball got the season started off with a huge district win over Mt. Vernon Tuesday evening 5-3. The Atoms came out strong early with 3 runs in the first and battled the rest of the way to get the win. The other two games of the week weren't as kind as the Atoms fell to Falls Church and Osbourn in 5th inning run rules. The Atoms return to the field with district opponent Hayfield Tuesday.

Baseball won their first game of the district season in comeback fashion. The Atoms were down 8-2 before scrapping back to a 9-8 win over Mt. Vernon Tuesday evening. The Atoms came up short in their game vs Falls Church Thursday going into the 7th tied at 4 before allowing three runs to give Falls Church the win. The Atoms host Hayfield Tuesday evening.

Boys Tennis kicked off their season with Falls Church Wednesday. The team returns only a few players and will have some growing pains this year but played hard vs Falls Church, winning one of the doubles matches on the night. The Atoms host Justice Monday.

Girls Tennis served it up vs Falls Church and Hayfield to start their season. The Atoms played hard but were no match for both teams winning only one match between the two games. The Atoms return to the court Monday evening at Justice.

Boys Lacrosse got their season underway with a road game to Marshall Friday evening. The Atoms continue their growth from last year but their teamwork and determination were on display as they gave the Statesmen all they could handle. The Atoms fell short but look to get back after Monday evening as they host Wakefield.

Girls Lacrosse had a great game vs Marshall. An early deficit of 6-1 saw the Atoms storm back before the half to be down 7-5 midway through. Unfortunately the Atoms lost the steam and fell 11-7 but it was an impressive showing by the team in their first game. The Atoms are playing in the Atoms Lacrosse Tournament today and return to play Friday at South Lakes.

Outdoor Track & Field had their first event of the year at TJ Wednesday evening. The Atoms showed up throughout the night with several athletes qualifying for the district and region meets after just one event. The Atoms hit the track again Wednesday at Justice.

Annandale Community Insider - March 10

PTSA1 month 3 weeks ago

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

At Annandale, we have long held a shared belief that our diversity is our greatest strength. This week, we celebrated Inclusion Revolution Week, which honors the many cultures, perspectives, and experiences of our students. This is one of my favorite weeks of the year as it showcases the very best of Atom Nation.

The week began with our monthly W4 Activities Day. Students had a special opportunity to hear from Dr. Geovanny Ponce, FCPS Chief of Schools. During his speech, he recounted his inspiring journey as an immigrant and educator, detailing the challenges he faced and emphasizing the importance of self-belief, even in the face of skepticism from others.

On Wednesday, we held our annual FanQuest pep rally, where students on the Special Olympics teams from Annandale and Justice took to the court in front of a crowd of cheering fans. This event is a celebration of inclusion and respect in which we come together to honor the unique strengths of each student. It is truly moving to watch our entire student body captivated by the Special Olympics student athletes as they cheer on both teams.

Finally, on Friday, our incredible community came out for our Just World Festival and Heritage Night. After school, the halls were filled with student clubs and local organizations that are striving to make the world a better place, both locally and globally. Students hosted workshops, shared cultural foods and experiences, and built community and understanding all while having fun at the Just World Festival. The evening culminated with our Heritage Night performance. Hosted by our leadership class, students shared their cultural heritage and pride with a fashion show and dance performances as families and peers cheered in the packed auditorium.

I am so proud to be a part of a community that not only values, but actively celebrates every member of Atom Nation. A huge thank you to all the staff, students, families, and community organizations that played a part in orchestrating these remarkable events.

Have a great week, Atom Nation! As always, reach out with any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

During this time, many of our Muslim students may be fasting and it is important for those students to have a quiet, alternative location to go to during lunchtime. Therefore, the library will be open to students who would prefer to go there during lunch rather than the cafeteria. If you have questions, please contact Sarah Eqab.

March 12 - Spring Social and Emotional Learning Screener: Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. This latest iteration of PRIDE Time will focus on identifying students in need of preparation for the upcoming SOLs. Students who are not identified for intervention will be assigned a Study Hall PRIDE Time and will have the ability to complete assignments or request assistance from another Study Hall PRIDE Time teacher. Beginning March 11, students will be able to view their new PRIDE Time assignment in SIS StudentVue as their period 11 class.

March 13 - ASAP 3.0 Begins: On Wednesday, March 13 we will begin our third round of our After School Academic Program. ASAP is one way we support students needing intervention in more than one subject area. Students selected to participate in ASAP work with an assigned teacher after school from 3:10-4:10pm. Selected students and parents will receive an email with updated assignments and teachers will provide students with paper invitations during class. Students are expected to attend ASAP before other extracurricular activities, including sports and detention. Late buses are available, and Super Snack is provided in the cafeteria after 4:15pm. If you have questions about your student’s ASAP assignment, please reach out to Matt Carlock.

March 13 - Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PTSD), 6:30pm: Annandale High School will be hosting Partners for Safe Teen Driving on March 13 at 6:30pm. The state of Virginia requires students and their parents to attend one session of Partners for Safe Teen Driving in order to receive their Pink Card (DEC-8). If the parent and student are not in the auditorium at 6:30pm then they will be asked to attend another session. If you have any questions, please email Lizzie McManus.

March 14 - Lockdown Drill: This week we will conduct our second required lockdown drill of the school year. Your student may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your student about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Here are some helpful tips for families to use to support their students before and after school lockdown drills.

During the trip, students will be touring Lincoln Center, seeing a Broadway show, attending a workshop, and seeing a performance at Juilliard. The afternoon before leaving for the trip, students will enjoy a clinic with members of The United States Army Band and members of the National Symphony Orchestra on “Setting the Tone.”

March 25-29 - Spring Break: Schools and school offices will be closed. See the complete 2023-24 school year calendar

Awesome Atoms

Heritage Night Celebrates AHS Diversity and Belonging! Friday night, Annandale hosted our Annual Heritage Night Performance. Students had an opportunity to showcase their culture through music, dance, fashion, and more. Audience members enjoyed an incredible array of performances by students in which the appreciation of our diversity shined. Special thanks to all of our performers who worked so hard to practice their showpieces, our fantastic MCs Semir Ali, Radiate Yohanes and Kenza Choukairi as well as our leadership teachers, Madison Morella and Selvana Ayoub for their hard work in making the show a success!

Annandale Teachers Are Lifelong Learners! A big shout out to our English 10, Geometry, and Chemistry teams who have been participating in professional development around engaging students through high quality instruction using the workshop model. We really appreciate our staff taking the day to work with their admin and coach and learn together about ways to maximize our time in the classroom. Teachers learned tools and strategies to support students in completing tasks independently while teachers work with others in small groups.

Congratulations to Thanh Nguyen, National Merit Scholarship Finalist! Congrats to Thanh Nguyen, who has been recognized from a pool of over 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists from around the country. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and college scholarships that began in 1955. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. United States high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which serves as an initial screen of over 1.3 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.

FCPS Chief of Schools Addresses Atom Nation: On Monday, March 4, Dr. Ponce, the FCPS Chief of Schools, came to Annandale to share his personal story of immigrating to the United States with many of our own newcomer students. The session also highlighted the importance of diversity in our schools and the opportunities being multilingual can provide. We are so appreciative of Dr. Ponce taking the time to motivate and inspire our students!

Journalism Students Learn From Some of the Best in the News Business: Students in the Journalism Pride Time group welcomed Christi Parsons of the University of Maryland’s Medill College of Journalism, former Wall Street Journal Washington Bureau Chief Al Hunt, Morning Edition’s Michael Martin and four of her colleagues from NPR including Chief Washington Editor Krishnadev Calamur, Morning Edition Editors Adam Bearne and Mohamed ElBardicy, and producer Nina Kravinsky. Students met in small groups with journalists to get individualized suggestions on how to complete the stories they've been working on since January.

FanQuest Rocks Atom Nation! On Wednesday, March 6, the Annandale Special Olympics Basketball team hosted the Justice Wolves for our annual FanQuest. FanQuest is an event that promotes inclusion and respect for students with disabilities through sports. Both the Atoms and Wolves played with the support of general education peers involved with the Special Olympics and Best Buddies programs. These are programs in which students have the opportunity to work with their Cat-B peers.

The event, as a part of our annual Inclusion Revolution week, was supported by our leadership class, boys basketball team, band, and cheerleaders. It was an incredible experience to watch our Special Olympics athletes showcase their basketball skills in the gymnasium packed with student fans. All eyes were on our athletes and the crowd went wild when the first basket was made, and the cheering didn’t stop. The support and appreciation our students had for both the Wolves and their fellow Atoms was overwhelming. Special thanks to Special Olympics Coaches Janan Hawthorne, Katie Shaw and Paul Fink for coordinating this incredible event and to the Justice Wolves for an amazing game. A special shoutout to Mr. Lee and our leadership students for MCing the event and getting the gym set up for our athletes. Any student that would like to get involved with Special Olympics or Best buddies can reach out to Coach Hawthorne or Ms. Salgado or stop by room 22!

College Admission & Financial Aid

Scrimmages wrapped up this week with several unfortunate cancelations thanks to mother nature. A few programs were able to get some reps and were impressive to watch. Boys and girls soccer had impressive showings in their final tune up versus West Potomac and are looking to show the National District what they've got when the season starts Tuesday! Baseball, girl's and boys lacrosse completed their scrimmages and the progress and improvements from last year are already starting to show and will look to compete for a region playoff spot this year!

Other programs had their final scrimmage canceled but everyone is geared up and ready to go!

Annandale Community Insider - March 3

PTSA2 months ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

This is our annual Inclusion Revolution Week! During this time, our vision that “we find strength in diversity and foster belonging” is on full display.

We will begin the week with our monthly W4 Activities Day. As you know, W4 Activities Days are additional opportunities for students to deepen their sense of connection and belonging to Atom Nation. On this day, you can find students playing soccer or volleyball, dancing, painting, making friendship bracelets, trying new instruments, completing club-related tasks, and more. I am so proud we are one of the few high schools that manage the planning and logistics for this monthly event. A big thank you to our Assistant Director of Student Activities, Bryan Harris, and our teachers and staff for supporting this day!

Tuesday is election day, and a student holiday. When we return on Wednesday, we will hold our annual FanQuest pep rally. FanQuest is an event that promotes inclusion and respect for students with disabilities. During W4, students will attend a Pep Rally where they will cheer on our Special Olympics basketball team as they showcase their skills in a game against the Justice Wolves. This is a unique opportunity for our Special Olympics athletes to experience a real game day atmosphere in front of their peers. Check out this video from last year’s FanQuest event

Over the past few weeks, our Special Olympics team has been fundraising through the “Pie the Admin” contest. During lunch, students and staff have had the opportunity to donate to our Special Olympics program, voting for the administrator they would like to see get “pied.” The pep rally will culminate with a pie in the face of the “winning” administrator (and for some reason, I seem to be in the lead...again!)

Finally, we will end the week with our annual Just World Festival and Heritage Night. These events make up one of the best evenings of the year. The theme for this year’s Just World Festival is "Solidarity in Community,” and strives to educate the community about global and environmental issues, fair trade, human rights, equality, and most importantly, social action. Directly after the Just World festival, students will showcase their cultural heritage at the Heritage Night performance in an incredible celebration of our diversity. This event has been very popular in the past, so we highly recommend pre-purchasing your tickets today to reserve your seats! No tickets will be sold at the door.

Have a great week, Atom Nation! As always, reach out with any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Annandale Community Insider - February 25

PTSA2 months 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

At Annandale, we often say that, “When you’re surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible.” Building this community begins with hiring, and this weekend, I, along with Assistant Principals Aaron Schneider and Hanna Langstein, attended the FCPS Job Fair at Lake Braddock.

Our approach to hiring is to focus on ensuring candidates’ are aligned in our values, have strong instructional skills, and an ability to build strong relationships. To that end, over the last several years, we have been purposeful in recruiting prospective candidates who share our priorities of relationships and support, high quality instruction, and strong collaboration.

When we hire, we don’t just interview candidates. Instead, we invite them to come see Annandale High School, walk our halls, visit our classrooms and speak with students and staff members. As a result, candidates know exactly what it will mean to be a part of Atom Nation. Our new hires choose Annandale over other schools because we are clear about who we are and how we work together. Check out the Atom Nation At A Glance Packet that we share with all of our prospective staff members.

In addition to, or perhaps because of our shared commitment to our priorities, we also have a lot of fun as a community. On Saturday, Annandale hosted our annual Monopoly Tournament sponsored by the PTSA. Congratulations to Juli Valentine who was crowned this year’s Annandale Monopoly Tournament Champion! Annandale student, Haaniah Beg, finished second and former Annandale administrator Brian Valentine was third, followed by former champion and Annandale math teacher Toby Dienstfrey. Huge shoutout to Rai Kent and the PTSA for organizing this fun event.

Have a great week, Atom Nation! As always, reach out with any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Annandale Celebrates Black History Month

February is Black History Month. This year’s theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of “visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression.” Throughout the month, we will celebrate and honor the experiences, achievements, and contributions made by African Americans and their central role in US History.

This week, Government classes are researching the Executive Branch and practicing source analysis skills through the study of presidential executive orders which advanced racial equality beginning with the Emancipation Proclamation. In World History, students are focusing their learning on the lasting impact the Haitian Revolution had on the fight for independence throughout Latin America, and how African nations exhibited agency during the Age of Imperialism.

School-Family Partnership

Research shows that the single most impactful thing parents can do to support their student’s education is to talk with them about school. We encourage you to talk with your student about their school experience. Here is a question to help get the conversation started...

“I heard there were different W4 lessons for Black History Month last week. Which one did your class do?"

Thank you for everything you do to support us and your student - we truly work together to support our students’ needs!

AHS Equity Team for ELs Volunteer at DC Central Kitchen: Last Wednesday, 35 students from the AHS Equity Team for ELs, Alumni of the Center for International Education and Exchange (CIEE), and Just World volunteered at DC Central Kitchen. This experience allowed students a hands-on opportunity in public service to develop their interest in being changemakers around the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The students made a valuable contribution in their DMV community by way of peeling, chopping, mixing, weighing, and packaging food for those in need. The students heard from (and were complimented by!) the DC Central Kitchen CEO, who thanked them for their efforts and encouraged them to continue to be global citizens. This trip was made possible by the Educate Fairfax grant awarded to AHS earlier this school year.

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

Today marks the start of the spring sports season. Sports and activities are a great way for students to deepen a sense of belonging at school. The benefits of participating in athletics in high school is well documented. Sports benefit both our physical and mental health and help mitigate stress and anxiety. Moreover, students who participate in athletics perform better academically than their peers. Spring sports include tennis, soccer, lacrosse, track and field, baseball and softball.

To learn more about Annandale's Spring sports programs, check out this week’s “Atoms Athletics and Activities Newsletter,” that includes required paperwork and tryout information. In addition, information about Annandale High School Athletics and Activities can be found on their website. Please email Brandon Sutphin if you have any questions.

Looking ahead, I am excited for our Inclusion Revolution Week, which kicks off Monday, March 4, with our final W4 Activities day of the year. As you know, W4 Activities Days are additional opportunities for our 2200 students to deepen their sense of connection and belonging to Atom Nation. Held monthly during our advisory and intervention period, students select from academic, club-sponsored, or plain old fun activities to participate in. On this day, you can find students playing soccer or volleyball, walking the track, painting or making slime, trying new instruments, or completing club-related tasks, among other options. I am so proud we are one of very few high schools that manage the planning and logistics for this monthly event. A big thank you to our Assistant Director of Student Activities, Bryan Harris, and our teachers and staff for supporting this day!

As the next part of Inclusion Revolution Week, we will host Justice High School at our FanQuest Pep Rally and basketball game on Wednesday, March 6. This is an opportunity for our students with severe disabilities to play some great basketball against another FCPS high school, with the tremendous support of our entire student body. This may be my favorite event of the year. I have to admit, the show of support from all of our students and staff makes me tear up every time. Check out this video from last year’s FanQuest event.

Finally, that week culminates with our 18th Annual Just World Festival and Heritage Night on Friday, March 8. These events make up one of the best evenings of the year at Annandale. The theme for this year’s Just World festival is "Solidarity in Community,” and it strives to educate the community about global and environmental issues, fair trade, human rights, equality, and most importantly, social action. Directly after the Just World festival, students will showcase their cultural heritage at the Heritage Night performance in an incredible celebration of our diversity. This event fills our auditorium and tickets go fast, so please see below for more information!

Have a great week, Atom Nation! As always, reach out with any questions you have.

This week, in honor of Black History Month, government classes are researching the Executive Branch and practicing source analysis skills through the study of presidential executive orders which advanced racial equality beginning with the Emancipation Proclamation. In World History, students are focusing their learning on the lasting impact the Haitian Revolution had on the fight for independence throughout Latin America, and how African nations exhibited agency during the Age of Imperialism.

We want to educate the community about global and environmental issues, fair trade, human rights, equality, and most importantly, social action.

School-Family Partnership

Families recently received a personalized student progress report email which includes students’ grades as well as any academic interventions or supports the student is receiving.

Research shows that the single most impactful thing parents can do to support their student’s education is to talk with them about school. We encourage you to talk with your student about their classes and how they are taking advantage of PRIDE Time. Here is a question to help get the conversation started...

" How will you stay connected to school during the spring season?"

Thank you for everything you do to support us and your student - we truly work together to support our students’ needs!

News from Student Services

Course Selection Information: At Annandale, we want to ensure students and families know where to access all the information needed for course selection. Our Academic Advising page has the grade level information presented by counselors and the course selection Google forms that students must complete. We encourage you to visit this site with your student to discuss courses for next year. Here are some questions you can use to engage with your student about course selection:

  • Which classes most excite you about next year?
  • When looking at your classes, what are your electives and why did you select those?
  • What type of diploma are you going for?
  • Where would you like to be challenged?
  • Where do you think you might need support?

Please reach out to our counselors if any questions or concerns arise. Their emails and phone numbers can be found on our Student Services page. We are here to help and look forward to supporting our students through this process!

College Admission & Financial Aid

FAFSA Info for Class of 2024: The Federal Student Aid FAFSA form is now available (soft launch is working out glitches, so be patient with the website). The application is free and is the largest source of aid to help pay for college or career/trade school. Even if you don't think your family would qualify for financial assistance, you would still want to complete the application because some states and colleges use information from the FAFSA form to determine student eligibility for their grants, scholarships, and loans.

Transcript Requests for College Applications & Scholarships: Seniors need to request official high school transcripts one month prior to application deadlines. For example, if a college application is due on March 10, the Transcript Request Form is due on February 10. We will be receiving a very high volume of requests in the coming months, and our Student Services staff needs adequate time to process them. Early Action and Early Decision application deadlines are quickly approaching. For step-by-step instructions and forms for submitting Transcript Requests, go to the College & Career Planning Google site.

Register For College Rep Visits: Are you interested in hearing from college admissions representatives from colleges you are interested in applying to? Please follow the directions below to register. (Juniors and Seniors ONLY). Log into Naviance and click "Student Naviance Login." Click on "Colleges" at the top of the page and then click on "college visits." You will then see a list of all the colleges that are visiting, along with the dates and times. Click "register now" for the visits you would like to attend. Students must show the email to their teacher and get permission to attend. Students who are not registered in Naviance for a college visit will be denied entry. Please note that students are limited to registering for up to six college visits!

Annandale Community Insider - February 11

PTSA2 months 3 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

I am thrilled to share that the Annandale Community Insider, our weekly newsletter to the students, parents and community members, recently won “Best High School Newsletter” at the 2024 FCPS School Communicators Conference. It was four years ago this month that we sent our first Community Insider. Our goal then and now is not only to provide you with the information needed for the upcoming week and beyond, but also to build culture, reinforce our vision, share celebrations, and establish a sense of community. Special thanks to Jen Cory and Jeniva Miller, who help collect, organize and edit our weekly newsletter!

On another note, we recognized our amazing school counselors this past week during Counselor Appreciation Week. Each day counselors were celebrated with cards made by their students, breakfast or lunch, and small gifts. On Thursday, we held our very first counselor parade! Led by members of the marching band, our Student Services team walked the building as students lined the hallways with signs and cheers of appreciation. Check out the video on our Instagram page.

Finally, tomorrow we will host W4 Activities Day. This day is a time set aside each month for students to explore clubs and activities and connect with classmates and staff over shared interests. We are excited to offer this experience for our students and continue to find ways we help our students feel connected to school.

Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Black and African American people year-round, and Black History Month is one opportunity to honor these diverse and important stories. Guided by resources curated by the FCPS Social Studies Office, teachers are providing students opportunities to reflect on and celebrate the role of African Americans in US History.

At Annandale, our African American History students have created school-wide lessons that will be shared during W4. These lessons are a wonderful opportunity for all of us to learn from and with each other. In addition, students in US/Va History classes are completing a month-long project studying the African American experience during the Reconstruction era and analyzing the ways in which African Americans exercised their freedom and fought against unjust policies & actions.

Annandale Celebrates Our School Counselors!

School Counselors at Annandale are engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; work in partnership with families as they encounter challenges of raising children in today’s world; focus on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an education system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. We cannot thank our counseling team enough for all of their hard work and dedication to the welfare of our students!

If you have not done so already, please reach out to our counselors to show them your appreciation! Their contact information can be found here

“Monday is W4 Activities Day. Which activity did you sign up for?"

Annandale Community Insider - February 4

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

What an exciting week in Atom Nation! We are so proud of Annie Ray, 2024 GRAMMY Music Educator of the Year. Last night, Annie was honored at the GRAMMY Special Merit Awards in Los Angeles alongside Gladys Knight, Ice Cube and other fellow artists. Check out Annie being interviewed on the red carpet before the event. Be sure to watch the GRAMMY Awards tonight at 8:00pm, with Red Carpet events beginning at 6:00pm. See below for viewing details.

It was great to see so many students displaying Atom Pride during spirit week and at Friday’s pep rally, where we celebrated our winter athletes. As part of this event, teachers and members of our admin team participated in a pie eating contest. While I did not win, I did get pied in the face by a few enthusiastic staff members. After several showers, I think I still have whipped cream in my ear. A big congratulations to all of our winter athletes, and a huge thank you to our Leadership students and Activities Office for organizing this fun event!

On Thursday, I hosted a virtual Principal Check-In where I shared the ways we are working together through our systems and structures to ensure that our students can achieve their full potential. Thank you to families who were able to attend. You asked such thoughtful questions and shared important perspectives. I appreciate our school and family partnership.

To that end, families and students should have received emails with new ASAP assignments. Our next round of PRIDE Time and ASAP begin. As always, our instructional coaches and teams have worked together over the past few weeks to re-identify students who need additional academic support during the school day and after school. Students can find their updated PRIDE Time assignments in StudentVue no later than tomorrow evening. If you have any questions about your students’ PRIDE Time or ASAP assignment, please reach out to your students’ teachers.

Finally, this week is National School Counseling Week, when we celebrate the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for college or a career. Our counselors focus on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development, work with our teachers to provide an environment where students can realize their potential, and partner with parents to support the needs of our students. We cannot thank our counseling team enough for all of their hard work and dedication to the welfare of our students!

Have a great week, Atom Nation! As always, reach out with any questions you have.

Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Black and African American people year-round, and Black History Month is one opportunity to honor these diverse and important stories. Guided by resources curated by the FCPS Socials Studies Office, teachers are providing students opportunities to reflect on and celebrate the role of African Americans in US History. In addition, our African American History students have created school-wide lessons that will be shared during W4. These lessons are a wonderful opportunity for all of us to learn from and with each other.

"This week is School Counselor Appreciation Week. How will you show your appreciation for your counselor?"

Thank you for everything you do to support us and your student - we truly work together to support our students’ needs!

Led by Liam Kessler (Robert) and Kaya Thomas (Sally) Annandale took the audience on a flight back to their childhood where it all began, with playing pretend. The judges were amazed by Sally’s sense of wonder and the relationship between the sibling duo, along with the children who contributed to their world of wonder and reality. They called the performance, “A strong story with ridiculous amount of fun!” Our very own Kaya Thomas was also one of 8 performers recognized with the ‘All-Star Performer Award.’ Congratulations to the cast of ‘Things That Fly’ on a job well done!

Scholastic Bowl Team Participates in Tournament Debut: The newly formed Scholastic Bowl team at AHS made their debut in Scholastic Bowl Tournament competition this past Saturday, January 27. They competed in the Occoquan Sectional and Regional Scholastic Bowl Tournament against five other schools. They competed well and are looking forward to being regulars on the Scholastic Bowl competition circuit.

Students Visit NOVA STEM Fab Lab: On Tuesday, 40 AHS students visited the Fabrication Lab, a maker space on the campus of NOVA Manassas. Students toured the Fab Lab and learned about design thinking by collaboratively designing a solution to help an unsighted Lego sculptor sort his Legos before building his creations. Students also learned about STEM programs that NOVA offers, both summer programs and paid internships for high school students and college degree programs for after they graduate. Huge thank you to Educate Fairfax for funding this opportunity for our students!

Everybody Scores at Special Olympics Basketball! This past weekend the Special Olympics team took part in the first basketball tournament of the year against the Justice Wolves and Yorktown Patriots. The team had great team play as they came out with every member of the team scoring a point!

Ten Annandale Students Advance to Regional Science Fair: Nineteen Annandale Students Advance to Regional Science Fair: A huge shout-out to all of the teachers who guided students through the science fair project process. Over the last few months our science teams have been working to support students as they prepare their Science Fair Projects. On Wednesday, January 31, Annandale held our in-school science fair. From there, Annandale will send 19 projects to the Regional Science Fair that will take place the weekend of March 15-17. A big thank you to all of our students and staff members who participated in making this year’s science fair a success!

Important Information

Now thru February 13 - Academic Advising: Our counselors began meeting one-on-one with students through their English classes. We began with our rising seniors and then will work through the other grade levels over the next several weeks. Students will be sent an email with their appointment time the weekend before they are scheduled to meet with their counselor. As always, students and families can get more information about course selection on our Academic Advising website.

Social Studies Performance Based Assessments: The Virginia Department of Education has approved the use of Performance Based Assessments (PBAs) as a replacement for the SOL Exam for students to earn locally awarded verified credit (LAVC) in Social Studies. This means that, instead of taking a traditional SOL test at the end of the year, students will be completing performance based assessments throughout the remainder of the school year. These assessments will be part of students’ course grades, as well as how they earn verified credit. Students must earn 1 verified credit in Social Studies to be awarded either the Advanced or Standard Diploma. In order to earn the verified credit for their course, students will need to:

  1. Earn a minimum rubric score of 1 (out of 4) on each Performance Based Assessment, and
  2. Receive a passing grade for the course by the end of the school year.

VDoE has created the assessments and rubrics that Social Studies teachers will use this year. These assessments are aligned with the Virginia State Standards and integrated into our course. For questions, please reach out to your student’s Social Studies teacher or email Meg Anderson. More information about this program can be found on the Virginia Department of Education website.

WiDA Testing: WiDA testing began on Wednesday, January 31. Over the next few weeks more than 720 students at Annandale will be scheduled to complete the four-part WiDA exam. Federal law requires that all Level 1-5 English Learners (ELs) participate annually in an English language proficiency assessment. WiDA ACCESS for ELs consists of the following parts: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Students will take the four parts of WiDA over multiple test sessions. This assessment determines a student’s English language proficiency level, eligibility for ESOL services and testing accommodations. It also provides teachers with information they can use to plan for and support their students’ learning. Students enrolled in ELD courses will be testing during their ELD courses. All other students have received an email with their individual test schedules.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires an annual English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment to be administered to all English Learners in grades K-12 (ELP levels 1-5 and 9), including ELs whose parents/guardians have refused ESOL services. The purpose of the assessment is to determine a current ELP level and measure progress towards English language proficiency. If you have any questions about the WIDA testing window, please contact Meg Anderson.

Transcript Requests for College Applications & Scholarships: Seniors need to request official high school transcripts one month prior to application deadlines. For example, if a college application is due on January 10, the Transcript Request Form is due on December 10. We will be receiving a very high volume of requests in the coming months, and our Student Services staff needs adequate time to process them. Early Action and Early Decision application deadlines are quickly approaching. For step-by-step instructions and forms for submitting Transcript Requests, go to the College & Career Planning Google site.

GO ATOMS!!! Atoms Weekly Recap

A recap from the week in winter sports:

Girls Basketball hosted their final home game of the season vs Lewis. The Atoms celebrated three seniors on the evening and celebrated a victory over the Lancers. The freshman fell short in their exciting game while JV scored early and often on their way to a win. Varsity saw themselves in an early double digit deficit but their grit and determination saw the Atoms take a lead into the 4th quarter. The last frame was an exciting back and forth affair that ultimately saw the Atoms behind Ava Sewall and senior Susan Aburish put the Lancers away in the final minute to get the win! The Atoms continued their hot streak for three quarter at TJ but cooled off in the fourth quarter, falling short in their attempt to get a second win in a row. The Atoms played well and saw themselves trailing by one after three before TJ got hot to put the Atoms away in the fourth. The Atoms travel to Edison Monday evening.

Boys Basketball played two key districts games this week. The first one saw the Atoms dominate the Lancers in the varsity game. The Atoms jumped out early and never took their foot off the pedal as they ran away from the Lancers to secure a huge district win. The Atoms welcomed TJ Friday evening in a pivotal district matchup. The crowd was treated to an exciting game with the Atoms holding multiple leads in the first half but trail at the half. The second half saw lead changes throughout before TJ settled in in the last half of the fourth quarter to put the Atoms away. The Atoms host Edison Monday evening to kick off the last week of the regular season.

Swim/Dive had a successful National District Championship Meet with several swimmers and divers qualifying for the Occoquan Region Championships February 9 and 10. The Atoms competed hard all night with a couple swimmers being crowned district champions in their events. Colin McGee started the evening off with an impressive swim to win districts in the 200IM. Melanie Decareau had a great 50 freestyle event but fell short of a district championship by a mere .01 seconds! Noah Popp completed the individual events for the Atoms running away with a district championship in the 100M backstroke. All three have qualified for the region meet and are at the cut line for state qualifying times. The Atoms relay teams had great nights as well as the boys and girls relay teams all qualify for the region meet. The boys 200IM, 200 Freestyle, and 400 freestyle relays all took second place in their respective events with the first two only being within two seconds of state qualifying times. All swimmers will get one more shot at an opportunity for states as they compete in the Occoquan Region Championships next Friday and Saturday at Oak Marr Rec Center in Vienna.

Wrestling traveled to Lewis Thursday for the National District Championships. It was tough early for the Atoms as two wrestlers made it to the semifinals after round 1. However, the Atoms hung tough and fought back to get 11 of 14 wrestlers to qualify for the Occoquan Regional Championships. The Atoms were highlighted by Jordy Lopez Funes who the district championship in his weight class! Jordy goes into the region tournament as the number one ranked wrestler. All 11 wrestlers will compete Wednesday and Thursday at Robinson in the Occoquan Regional Championships.

Indoor Track competed in the National District Championships this week. There was some impressive showings by multiple Atoms led by Pamela Moura and her district championship in the triple jump event! The girls 4x200 relay took second place in their respective event to qualify for the region championship meet. There were multiple Atoms who qualified for the regions including Pamela Moura, Teagan Scott-Daniels (auto qualified), and Logan Noyes in the high Jump to name a few. These Atoms will compete in the Occoquan Region Championships February 14 and 15.

Gymnastics completed their season Monday at the National District Championships at Mount Vernon. The Atoms showcased their skills throughout the evening and were impressive to see the growth each gymnasts has had during the season. Kate Hanlon was able to secure a spot in the Occoquan Regional Championship with her top three finish in three different events. She will compete Monday evening at Robinson at 4:30pm
