IB Open Access Policy

IB Classes are Open to All Students at AHS

Open Access Policy

Annandale High School is one of eight IB schools located in Fairfax County, Virginia.  Any student living with the boundary of Annandale HS may attend.  Transfers are allowed if there is space and if the student is willing to commit to taking at least 4 IB courses.

The boundary locator website is http://boundary.fcps.edu/boundary/.

There is no application to enter Annandale’s IB program.  Every student that enters as a 9th or 10th grader is a part of the IB Middle Year’s Program.  Any student in the 11th or 12th grades that has successfully completed prerequisite courses may take an IB course.  Annandale has an open-access policy.  If a student along with parent consent want to take an IB course, they may.  Annandale encourages all students to experience as least one IB course prior to graduating.  All IB courses have a 1.0 weighted GPA.

Fairfax County public schools will pay up to 6 IB exams and the corresponding registration fees for each student.  This policy went into effect during the 2017-2018 school year.  Previously, the county had no limit and paid for every IB test.  Students can test in more than 6 IB classes, as long as they pay for those additional fees.  If a student does not want to pay for the additional fees, they may complete an opt-out form prior to November 1st.  This allows students to remain in the class and receive credit within the school system but does not allow them to earn IB credit.
