Annandale Students, Parents, and Community:

What an incredible week to be an Annandale Atom!

We are thrilled to announce that two of our Spanish teachers, Lauren Paz Soldan and Miles Meijer, have been recognized by the Foreign Language Association of Virginia (FLAVA) as Virginia’s 2024 World Language Teacher of the Year and Novice Teacher of the Year, respectively—an honor reflecting their commitment to inspiring our students to embrace new languages and cultures and become thoughtful global citizens. Huge congratulations to Lauren and Miles for this well-deserved recognition!

Adding to the excitement, our Field Hockey team won the National District Tournament Championship. Led by first team all-district players Riply Hotaling, Sofia Savvedra, Lilly Flores and district player of the year, Callia Uviedo, the Atoms defeated their three opponents by a combined score of 13-0 en route to their 2nd district championship in three years. And as if that were not enough, our Annandale Band had the privilege of leading the Annandale Parade this week, filling the streets with their energy and sound, representing the heart of our community with pride.

The excitement continues this week as we host our first W4 Activities Day on Monday, with the goal of expanding the ways we help our students feel connected to school. Later that evening, the Boys Volleyball team will host the first round of the district tournament against Falls Church. Our Girls Field Hockey team returns to the field for the regional quarterfinals on Wednesday, and on Halloween, our Varsity Football team will take on Lewis at 6:00pm. Before the football game, join us for Trunk or Treat starting at 4:30pm. It’s the perfect chance to celebrate a fun, festive evening together as a community!

As a reminder, this week is the end of the first quarter and a short week for students. Thursday, October 31 is a two hour early release and Friday is a holiday. See below for more information.

As always, please reach out with any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

New Bathrooms Approved: At the September 12, 2024 Fairfax County Public Schools School Board meeting, the construction contract was awarded for Stadium Restrooms – Phase 2 for the 14 high schools. The contractor will be mobilizing the last week of October/first week of November. This involves preparing the slab for the pre-manufactured concrete building. Groundwork includes electrical conduits to provide power to the building and additional domestic water and sanitary lines. Setting the restroom building is scheduled for the week of December 1, 2024. The dates are preliminary and subject to change based on the restroom building manufacturer building delivery schedule. Design and Construction’s intention is to limit construction to one high school at a time, with some overlap as one location installation completes and start-up at the next high school.

English 12 Teachers Participate in Lab Site: Recently, English 12 teachers came together for a full day of learning about how to implement the workshop model in order to provide targeted small-group instruction to meet students’ needs. This group spent the morning aligning on common language and purpose, observed Jeniva Miller, English coach teach a block, and discussed what they noticed. In the afternoon, teachers collaboratively planned upcoming lessons around this model and gave each other feedback. They will come together again in November in order to build upon their learning, this time with a particular focus on implementing small group instruction.

At Annandale, we know that the work of our teams is some of the best professional development we can get. Four of our CTs have now worked together through Lab Sites: Chemistry, English 10, Geometry, and now English 12. This intense professional learning requires thoughtful engagement and a commitment to getting better, and is a testament to the high level of professionalism our teachers demonstrate.

Atoms Athletics Recap

Girls Volleyball saw their final two games of regular season this week end in a split. Monday the Atoms traveled to Edison where they held a 2-1 set lead before falling in the fourth and fifth set in heartbreaking fashion. The loss didn't stick with the Atoms too long as they came back ready to play at Mt. Vernon Thursday. The Atoms handled the Majors, running away in three sets to get the win! The Atoms will be the number six seed in the district tournament and travel to TJ Monday at 5:30pm.

Boys Volleyball played their final two games of the regular season this past week. Monday the team honored the programs first senior class. It was a special night all the way around culminating in a 3-0 sweet of Edison on senior night. The win set up a final match up at Mount Vernon Thursday evening. The Atoms came in focused and took care of business from the first serve, dominating the Majors to sweep the game 3-0! The two wins vaulted the Atoms into fourth place in the National District and secured a home district playoff game for Monday evening vs Falls Church at 6:30pm.

Field Hockey ran away in their first two district tournament game vs Lewis and Mt. Vernon this week. Monday saw the Atoms come out slow, only to turn it on and put the Lancers away with a 6-0 win to set up a date with Mt. Vernon on Wednesday. The Majors gave the Atoms everything they had early on but the Atoms proved to be too much in the end, as they put the game away late in the third before cruising to the 4-0 win and move on to the National District Championship. The Atoms welcomed Justice to J. Wallace Bolding Stadium Friday evening for the district Championship. It was a game of back and forth possession as the Atoms possessed the ball about 70% of the time in the first quarter and it flipped to the Wolves in the second. The Atoms were able to sneak one past the goalie at the horn of the first quarter to hold a 1-0 lead. The Atoms put a second goal on the board and held that advantage heading into the 4th quarter. The 4th was a game of keep away that saw the Atoms add a third goal that sealed the win and the Atoms second National District Championship in three years!! The Atoms move on to host an Occoquan Region Quarterfinal game at Annandale on Wednesday at 6:00pm.

Football traveled to Mount Vernon for their last road game of the year. The Atoms found themselves in an early hole but battled their way throughout to and score just before the half to make it 21-6. The Atoms received the opening kickoff of the second half and returned it to the house to make it 21-12. Unfortunately for the Atoms, the Majors moved the ball down the field to make it 28-12 before ultimately pulling away to get the victory. The Atoms return home for a special Thursday Night Halloween edition vs Lewis at 6:00pm. Make sure to check out our Trunk or Treat before the game from 4:30-5:30pm in the front parking lot!

Boys and Girls Cross Country hit the trail this week at Burke Lake with the JV runners having the opportunity to showcase their running ability. The Atoms had some strong performances with several of the runners finishing in the top 15 of the event, proving that the future is bright for the program. The Atoms return to the course next Wednesday in the National District Meet at Burke Lake. Girls will run at 11:30am and boys will follow at 12:30pm.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community,

It is with immense pride that I share exciting news about one of our own. General James Clapper, a member of the Annandale High School Class of 1959 has been inducted into the Fairfax County Public Schools Alumni Hall of Fame! This prestigious honor recognizes General Clapper’s remarkable contributions to our country, including his role as the 4th United States Director of National Intelligence.

Throughout his distinguished career, General Clapper exemplified the values of leadership, service, and commitment—qualities that were undoubtedly shaped during his time at Annandale. From serving in the U.S. Air Force to advising the highest levels of government, he has made lasting contributions to national security and public service. His induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament not only to his accomplishments but also to the strong foundation laid by Fairfax County Public Schools and Annandale High School.

We celebrate General Clapper’s achievements and the inspiration he provides to all of our students and alumni. His legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within each Atom. Annandale’s commitment to fostering future leaders remains stronger than ever, and we are incredibly proud of General Clapper’s induction.

Annandale Community Insider - October 20

AHS News1 week 4 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents, and Community:

I am excited to share that Annandale High School has once again performed at the highest levels in academic achievement, continued to reduce achievement gaps, and increase student engagement and outcomes, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Education. In fact, our students continue to surpass all expectations, making Annandale the top-performing school in FCPS, based on the difference between predicted and actual results.

The foundation of our work at Annandale High School is our relentless focus on our priorities of relationships & support, high quality instruction, and strong collaboration. This approach has ensured that students spend the majority of class time meaningfully engaged—reading, writing, discussing, and thinking. The result is exceptional performance across multiple subjects, with a 95% success rate in English, a 90% success rate in Math, and 70% success rate in Science.

More impressive, our success extends across all student subgroups, including multilingual learners, economically disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities. By focusing on our priorities, we have been able to close achievement gaps and ensure that every student can thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances.

As we build on this success, we want to hear from our staff, students and families. Specifically, we would like to hear what is going well for you and your student, what is a challenge you would like to work together to problem-solve, who is someone who has helped you, and answer any questions. Keep an eye out for an email with a link to our Fall Check In Survey. We would appreciate your feedback by Sunday, November 10. In the coming weeks, we will share survey trends as well as how we are responding to your feedback.

Annandale High School is truly a place where we are changing the trajectory of the lives of our students. The success we continue to see demonstrates that our commitment to equity and excellence is paying off, and I am excited to continue this journey with our incredible community.

Thank you for your continued support of Atom Nation. Go Atoms!

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Mark your calendar, participate or bring the family to view this Annandale Tradition. Children are invited to wear their Halloween Costumes, to cheer the participants, and to marvel at the exhibits.

October 28 - W4 Activities Day: A continued focus at Annandale is to increase student involvement in activities outside of the classroom. One way we are doing this is by providing opportunities for students to explore clubs and activities and connect with classmates and staff over shared interests during the school day through our W4 Activities Day. These opportunities will occur each month from October to April, during W4 and Pride Time. Students selected their preferred activity via a Google form shared through their W4 lessons and on Schoology and an email was sent out this weekend sharing their assigned session for Monday. We are excited to offer this experience for our students and look forward to offering more ways to help our students feel connected to school.

Awesome Atoms

I gained valuable tools for supporting Multi-Language Learners (MLL) and learned data-driven strategies to advocate for school counseling.” She also enjoyed reconnecting with counselors and professors, adding, “This conference reinforced that school is like family, and that caring for one another truly makes a difference.”

Atoms Athletics Recap

Girls Volleyball played two district games this week as they prepare for the final week of the season. Monday, the Atoms honored their seniors before their game vs Lewis. It was a great night of celebration all the way around for the seniors as all three levels won their respective games vs Lewis! The Atoms played their final home game vs TJ Wednesday evening but came up short in their hard fought match. Their final two games of the season are on the road at Edison Monday and at Mt. Vernon Thursday.

Boys Volleyball split their two games this week. Monday the Atoms beat Lewis in five sets to continue to their movement up the National District standings. However, they gave a game back Wednesday evening with their loss at TJ. The Atoms host senior night Monday vs Edison before their final game vs Mt. Vernon Thursday.

Field Hockey wrapped up their regular season by securing the number one seed in the National District Tournament that begins Monday. The Atoms took care of business in their Monday matchup at Edison, running away from the Eagles to win 6-0. Wednesday was senior night and the Atoms honored their nine members before running through the Majors to win 7-1. The Atoms will host Lewis Monday evening at 7:30 in the National District Quaterfinals.

Football traveled to Edison to take on the Eagles in a National District showdown Friday evening. The Atoms jumped out early with a great opening drive that resulted in a touchdown pass to give the Atoms the early lead 6-0. The Atoms controlled the Eagles for much of the first quarter before the Eagles returned a punt for a touchdown and added a field goal to hold a 10-6 advantage. The Atoms battled back in the second quarter but the Eagles held a 20-12 lead heading into halftime. The third quarter was back and forth as the Eagles scored, the Atoms returned the favor, but couldn't keep the Eagles out of the endzone again as they held a 33-18 lead going into the 4th. Unfortunately the Atoms couldn't punch another in and fell short 40-18. The Atoms hit the road again as they travel to Mt. Vernon Friday evening.

Boys and Girls Cross Country got on the trail again but this time at Burke Lake in a final tune up before the National District Meet in two weeks. The Atoms continued their progression and improvements with runners continuing to achieve personal best times that will certainly prepare them for their district meet. Both teams are positioned right where they feel they need to be to make a run for a district championship at Burke Lake!

Annandale Class of 1974 Celebrates 50 Years!

AHS News2 weeks 1 day ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Students, Parents, and Community:

We recently had the incredible opportunity to welcome back the Class of 1974 for their 50th reunion. Over 100 alumni came together to reminisce, reconnect, and celebrate this major milestone. The weekend kicked off with guided tours of the school, where alumni revisited the hallways they once called home and reflected on how much has changed, while still feeling that familiar sense of Annandale pride and community. The class also gathered for a pre-game tailgate at AHS before heading to the stands to enjoy our Homecoming football game. The main event took place at Crescendo Studios, where the evening kicked off with a social hour, followed by a program featuring remarks from both alumni and myself as the current principal. It was an honor to reflect on the lasting legacy of the Class of 1974 and to highlight the ongoing success of the school they once called home.

While the world around us has changed in so many ways, including the very makeup of our student body, one thing remains constant—the strong sense of community that the Class of 1974 helped build. Today, our students represent an incredible diversity of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. It is a reflection of the changing times, but also of the strength and inclusivity that has always been a part of Annandale's DNA.

Even though the faces and names may be different, the bond that connects everyone at this school—students, staff, and alumni—remains the same. Whether it’s rallying together for homecoming, supporting each other through challenges, or celebrating the achievements of every student, that same spirit of community continues to be the heartbeat of Annandale. It was true in 1974, and it’s just as true now.

In honor of their reunion, the Class of 1974 generously donated to help renovate our gym—a space that holds countless memories for so many alumni and continues to be a hub of school spirit for today’s students. They are nearing their $5,000 goal, ensuring that future generations will continue to feel that same sense of pride. This gift reflects the deep bond they share with Annandale and their commitment to ensuring today’s students have the same opportunities for growth and connection. We are looking forward to receiving their generous gift at the AHS Athletics Hall of Fame dinner on November 9.

We are incredibly grateful for the Class of 1974’s generosity and ongoing support. Their reunion wasn’t just a celebration of the past, but a reminder that Annandale’s legacy of belonging, pride, and connection transcends generations. Whether you’re a current student or an alum celebrating 50 years, the ties made at Annandale truly last a lifetime. Here’s to keeping that tradition of excellence, inclusivity, and Atom pride going strong for years to come!

Go Atoms!

Annandale Community Insider - October 13

AHS News2 weeks 4 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents, and Community:

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. I made the 430+ mile drive back to Ohio with two of my kids, Claire and Jack, to meet up with my sister for our annual trip to "Halloweekends" at Cedar Point.

October is also an exciting time for our Performing Arts Department, which is hosting a fantastic lineup of concerts. The Band delivered a great performance last Tuesday at their informal concert titled, "Out of Darkness," with musical themes that portrayed the changing seasons and Halloween fun. This week, Orchestra will take the stage on Thursday, November 17. The following week, on Tuesday, October 22, our Chorus program will present songs of encouragement, positivity, hope and joy to remind us all how music can impact our lives. I encourage you to come out and enjoy these wonderful performances.

Speaking of Halloween, October 31, marks the end of the first quarter and is an early release for students. Once again this year, we are using a rolling gradebook. This means that quarter grades serve as a snapshot of a student's progress, but are not used to calculate final grades. Instead, final grades are calculated based on all assignments completed throughout the entire year.

I encourage students and families to check SIS and Schoology to ensure all assignments are submitted and any necessary assessment retakes are completed. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your student’s teachers. Additionally, I invite you to join me on Thursday, October 23, at 6:00pm for a virtual Fall Principal Check-In. I’ll be discussing our academic practices and sharing how we are supporting students with a focus on our priorities.

Lastly, a quick reminder that tomorrow, October 14, is a Indigenous Peoples’ Day. There will be no school for students.

Have a great week, Atom Nation! As always, reach out if you have any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Awesome Atoms

Annandale High School Pre-Qualified for ENERGY STAR Certification: Annandale HS has pre-qualified for this year’s ENERGY STAR certification. This means that Annandale performs better than 75% of schools across the nation in terms of energy consumption. The score is one of many criteria that is verified to qualify for the EPA’s ENERGY STAR. The next phase for qualification involves a site visit by a certification team. The verification process includes checking ventilation introduced by rooftop HVAC units, and taking light readings and temperature settings within classrooms.

Visual Arts Students Visit the National Gallery of Art: This past Tuesday, our photography students had the opportunity to experience the collection of photographs by legendary American photographer, Gordon Parks at the National Gallery of Art. Gordon Parks, one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century, was a humanitarian with a deep commitment to social justice. He left behind an exceptional body of work that documents American life and culture from the early 1940s into the 2000s, with a focus on race relations, poverty, civil rights, and urban life. Students were able to view piece after piece that embodied the American experience for people of color, while reflecting on the impact of these photos in the Civil Rights Movement.

Annandale Bands Hosts First Concert! The Annandale High School Band delivered an incredible performance last Tuesday at their informal concert titled "Out of Darkness." The concert explored musical themes that beautifully portrayed the changing seasons, blending in a touch of Halloween fun. It was a captivating evening that showcased the talent and creativity of our student musicians. Bravo to the band for an amazing performance!

Celebrating Our MYP Certificate Winners! Last week, we proudly celebrated the achievements of our students who earned the FCPS IB Middle Years Program (MYP) Certificate! The Annandale MYP Certificate Celebration was a special evening filled with recognition and pride as school leaders honored the hard work and dedication of our students. Families joined us in the AHS Auditorium to hear remarks, receive certificates, and enjoy light refreshments together. A special thanks to Dr. Geovanny Ponce, our esteemed guest speaker, for his inspiring words and for helping make the evening even more memorable. Annandale High School remains committed to fostering critical thinking, global citizenship, and community service. Congratulations once again to all of our MYP certificate recipients!

Celebrating Annandale Custodians: Custodian Appreciation Day was October 2. Over the years we have made significant investments in our building. Thanks to our custodians, we all have a clean, safe place to learn, teach, and work. Across the division, Fairfax County Public Schools employs more than 1,300 custodians, field custodians, and building supervisors. We appreciate everything our custodians do to make Atom Nation a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our students, staff, and community!

Important Information

2024-25 AP/IB Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees: As part of the FCPS budget, FCPS is continuing to pay for the first six IB/AP tests a student wishes to take. Students will be assessed Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test fees for any tests beyond the first six funded by FCPS. Students that have free/reduced lunch status and have completed the consent to share form, will not be charged these fees. FCPS and Annandale High School encourage all students to take IB tests for courses in which they are enrolled. This is an excellent opportunity to practice taking a college level exam. Atoms Athletics Recap

Golf's season came to close Monday afternoon in the Occoquan Region Championship. Sophia Sewall will play in the Girls Zone Qualifier next week. Cole Cardwell, Carter Demers, and Quinn Mongold represented Annandale in the championship. While none of the three qualified for the state tournament, they all had incredible seasons to represent the Annandale golf program. The program as a whole had a great year with many golfers achieving personal best rounds and continuous improvement by all leaves this program with a bright future ahead.

Girls Volleyball played two district games and came away with a 1-1 record. The Atoms traveled to Hayfield Monday evening and battled the Hawks throughout, holding a 1-1 tie going into the third set. However, the Hawks turned up the tempo to run away from the Atoms and win 3-1. Wednesday evening saw the Atoms play host to the Justice Wolves. Freshman got the night started with an exciting 2-1 win to make it their first win of the year. JV came up short in their match but the varsity came out strong and put the Wolves to sleep early. The Atoms had great team chemistry as it was evident throughout the game. The Atoms looked like a team that could cause some trouble in the postseason. Next up is senior night Monday vs Lewis.

Boys Volleyball traveled to Justice Tuesday evening and took on the district leading Wolves. The Wolves looked like a potential district champion as they handled the Atoms to win the match 3-0. The Atoms battled but it wasn't enough to secure a set win. The Atoms hit the road again Monday evening as they travel to Lewis.

Field Hockey got to play Hayfield for the first time since the district championship last year that saw the Hawks win 2-1 in the OT. This game however was a different story. The Atoms jumped out early, only to see the Hawks tie it at 1-1 in the first quarter. After that, it was ALL Atoms as they scored 5 more times to secure a 6-2 win. It was great test as the Atoms head into the final week of the regular season when they travel to Edison Monday and return Wednesday night to Annandale for Senior Night vs Mt. Vernon.

Football welcomed the Wolves to Annandale for a National District game Thursday evening. The game was a back and forth affair in a quick first half with both teams heading into the locker room tied at 14. The second half was dominated by the Atoms as they caused a turnover early that led to a score and followed it up with a safety to push the lead to 23-14. From there the Atoms never looked back as they ran away from the Wolves to get the 37-26 win! The Atoms put the helmets back on this week as they travel to Edison for a showdown with the Eagles Friday evening.

Boys and Girls Cross Country hit the trails Wednesday evening for senior night. The Atoms celebrated nine total seniors as they wind down their cross country careers. One the trails, the Atoms had several strong performances on both sides. The boys were led Nathaniel Dosen and Connor Uzokoff with their top 10 finishes while the girls were paced by Isabella Mercado and Sara Nagle. The Atoms continue their goal of continuous improvements as they run towards the National District Championship in a few weeks at Burke Lake.

Annandale Community Insider - October 6

AHS News3 weeks 4 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents, and Community:

At Annandale, we are committed to working together to meet our students’ needs. Two of the most effective ways we do this are through our PRIDE Time and ASAP programs, which provide targeted support to address the diverse academic needs of our students.

On Monday, we will begin PRIDE Time. Held each White Day, this dedicated time during the school day allows us to deliver focused academic interventions. Instructional coaches and teachers collaborate to identify students for subject-area interventions based on their academic data. Students identified for PRIDE Time will receive targeted support to help them succeed. Those not identified for intervention will attend Study Hall, where they can check grades, complete assignments, and connect with teachers as needed. Students have received an email with their PRIDE Time teacher and room number, and can also view their PRIDE Time assignment in StudentVue as their Period 11 class.

Additionally, our After School Academic Program, or ASAP for short, will also begin on Monday. ASAP provides extra support for students who need assistance in more than one subject area. Students assigned to ASAP will work with a teacher after school from 3:10 to 4:10pm. A free, pre-packaged Super Snack will be provided to those participating, and late buses will be available at 4:45pm for transportation home.

Families of students assigned to ASAP should have received an email outlining the details, including the day, subject, and teacher assignment. Students also received a letter from their teacher with their specific ASAP details. Please note that students are expected to attend ASAP before any other extracurricular activities, and are expected to attend all assigned sessions. If you have any questions about your student’s ASAP assignment, please contact our ASAP Coordinator, Bryan Harris.

We encourage you to have a conversation with your student about their PRIDE Time and ASAP assignments and how they are using this time to their advantage. As always, feel free to reach out to your student’s teacher, counselor, or administrator with any questions or concerns.

As a reminder, Wednesday we will hold the PSAT and SAT School Day exams. Students in grades 10-12 will be participating in these exams, and all students will see a change to their schedules. See below for detailed information.

Have a great week, Atom Nation!

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Over 125 students from band, choir, orchestra, guitar and theatre came together to walk specific routes to seek help from the community and spread awareness of the many performance opportunities that are scheduled for this school year at AHS. Funds raised from this effort will be divided among the disciplines and will be used for uniforms, clinician costs, marching band competitions, costumes, new string instruments, etc. If you haven’t had the opportunity to give to the performing arts efforts, you can do so on the Boosters webpage.

Cheerleaders Support Food for Others at Tysons 5K: Last Saturday the AHS Cheerleading program volunteered at the Tysons 5k – Food for Others! We look forward to volunteering at more events with this group later this year.

AHS Celebrates International Day: Last week, the Just World Club at Annandale High School celebrated the International Day of Peace with its inspiring annual Chalk4Peace event. Students gathered to creatively express their hopes for a more peaceful world by using colorful chalk to write and draw messages of unity, empathy, and harmony on the school’s sidewalks. The event not only showcased the diversity and positive spirit of our school but also reminded us of the power of coming together to advocate for peace across all cultures and backgrounds.

Two AHS Students Commended by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation: Congratulations to Annandale students Safa Touri and William Allison for their outstanding achievement on the PSAT/NMSQT and recently being named as a Commended Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The IB exam calendar can be found here. When IB scores are released in July 2025, students have the ability to share their scores with their colleges. However, if students wish to not test they will have the opportunity to opt-out.

To obtain the opt-out form, students must see Mrs. Bradshaw, IB Diploma Coordinator, in the library. Opt-Out forms are due by October 31 to Student Services. Parents will be billed in December through MySchoolBucks for any test fees beyond the six FCPS funded tests. These fees are non-refundable and there is no spring cancellation option.

Immunization Requirements: Please check with your health care provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records can also be delivered to your school’s front office.

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS Students: Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations at Frost Middle School for all FCPS students at no cost on Tuesday, October 8, 3-7pm, Saturday, October 12, 9am-5pm, and Monday, October 28, 3-7pm. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic.

Atoms Athletics Recap

Golf played in rain Monday in the National District Championship Tournament at Twin Lakes. The weather was off and on all day but the Atoms played well with their highest team finish of 5th place in several years. Cole Cardwell, Carter Demers, and Quinn Mongold all qualified for the Occoquan Region Golf Tournament that will take place Monday at Twin Lakes Golf Course.

Girls Volleyball held their annual Dig Pink night Tuesday evening vs Falls Church. It was a great night of raising money for Breast Cancer and an exciting night of volleyball. All three Atoms teams played hard and gave Falls Church a fight but fell short in their games. The Atoms hit the road for their next game at Hayfield Monday.

Boys Volleyball lost a heartbreak to Hayfield Monday evening. The Atoms lost the first set only to run through the Hawks in set 2 and 3 to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth set. In the fourth set, the Atoms held a 16-12 advantage before the Hawks got a hot streak to win the fourth set and carried it into the fifth set to get the win. The Atoms travel to Justice Tuesday evening.

Field Hockey dominated their only game of the week Monday evening at Lewis. The Atoms held a 2-0 lead at the half and scored 3 more times in the second half to get the 5-0 win over the Lancers. Next up is a date vs defending district champion Hayfield Monday evening at Annandale.

Football got their much needed bye week and return to the field as they host rival Justice Thursday evening.

Boys and Girls Cross Country unfortunately had their only meet of the week postponed due to unsafe conditions. The Atoms hit the trail Wednesday as they celebrate senior night.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

I am excited to announce Jae Lee as our new Assistant Principal. Jae has been an integral member of the Annandale community for the past 7 years, most recently serving as the Dean of Students, and supporting the Math Department. He holds a Master’s degree in Special Education from George Mason University and earned his license in Education Administration from the University of Virginia

Jae began his career at Annandale as a multiple disabilities teacher in our Cat B program, later becoming the department lead. He has also served as the mentoring coordinator and Leadership sponsor, fostering student growth and involvement.

Throughout his time at Annandale, Jae has been a passionate advocate for inclusion. He founded our Special Olympics program, which led to Annandale being recognized as one of only nine schools in the Commonwealth to receive the designation as a Special Olympics National Unified Champion School. Jae also led the Best Buddies club, which fosters meaningful friendships by pairing our special education students with general education peers, creating a truly inclusive and supportive environment. Jae’s dedication has already made a profound impact, and his work will continue to shape a more inclusive and compassionate community for all our students.

Annandale Community Insider - September 29

AHS News1 month ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents, and Community:

Homecoming Week was a huge success! It was so much fun to see the school spirit throughout the hallways as our students and staff celebrated Homecoming Spirit Week. There were some very creative pairings on Tuesday for rhyme without reason, and some equally creative “anything but” backpacks on Thursday.

Friday’s rain brought our pep rally and tailgate indoors, but it didn’t dampen our spirit! Atom Nation turned out for the evening’s homecoming game against Bishop Ireton. Among our most vocal fans were members of the Class of 1974 who took a tour of the campus to celebrate their 50th year reunion.

Homecoming week ended with our Homecoming Dance, “A Night in Hollywood.” Students enjoyed dinner from local food trucks, dancing, and capturing memories at the 360 photo booth. This week was packed with the moments that make high school unforgettable. I love seeing our students embrace these opportunities to connect and celebrate together. It is what makes Atom Nation so special. A huge thank you to our Leadership class, Activities and Student Life Office, and all our staff and students for making it such a spirited and memorable week!

Finally, since August, our teachers have been getting curious about our students, gathering data to determine each student’s individual strengths and needs - both academic, and social-emotional. Last week we began W4 check-ins. These one-on-one conversations are an opportunity to build a caring and trusting environment for all students, cultivate positive relationships, and identify student needs. In addition, teachers and teams have been reviewing assessment and grade data to identify students’ academic needs and assigning them targeted interventions. We will be using this data to place students into specialized PRIDE Time Intervention classes during our advisory block, which will begin on October 7. Be on the lookout for more information about your student’s PRIDE Time assignment.

As a reminder, this is a short week. Schools are closed Thursday for the Rosh Hashanah holiday, and Friday is a teacher work day. Have a fantastic week, Atom Nation! As always, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Important Information

October 11 - Social and Emotional Learning Screener: One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the SEL Screener. The screener is offered to all students in grades 3-12 in October and again in February or March. It addresses skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning experiences, and environments students need to be successful. SEL Screener results are sent to families via postal mail. Families who wish to opt their child out should complete the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or in the Digital Parental Consent App. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. Please note that the SEL Screener differs from the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey.

Scoliosis Fact Sheet: Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. A spine affected by scoliosis has a sideways curve, making it appear more like an “S” or a “C” than a straight line. Untreated scoliosis can lead to limited motion, back pain, deformity, and in extreme cases, impaired function of the heart and lungs. Early detection and treatment may prevent scoliosis from progressing. Learn more here.

Silent Space for Prayer & Reflection: The Annandale High School Reflection and Silent Space is available in the library for students who need to pray, meditate, or engage in silent reflection. This space is inclusive of all students’ religious and non-religious beliefs. Students may access the Reflection and Silent Space before school, after school, and during lunch. Students who need to access this space during class time, will need to have the Parent/Guardian Authorization for Reflection Space Access form completed and submitted to the main office. Forms are available in the main office and the library.

Atoms Athletics Recap

Golf celebrated senior night Wednesday evening vs Mount Vernon. The celebration started with honoring two seniors but carried over to the golf course where the Atoms defeated the Majors for their final match of the season. The Atoms were led by three golfers with scores in the 40's. The Atoms tee it up next in the National District Championships at Twin Lakes Monday.

Girls Volleyball played two key district games this week. First, the Atoms welcomed Edison to Robert Hardage Gymnasium and treated them to a 3-0 sweep for a huge win over a National District power. The Atoms jumped out early in each set and never looked back on their way to their second district win of the season. Next up was a home game vs Mount Vernon and it was like the Atoms didn't skip a beat from Monday. The Atoms rolled over the Majors to make it two in a row and finish the first time through the district sitting in the 5 seed.

Boys Volleyball hit the road for two district games at Edison and at Lewis vs Mount Vernon. The Atoms played hard but were swept 3-0 by the Eagles Monday evening. The Atoms turned around the next night and played Mount Vernon. The Atoms were much better this evening as they ran away from the Majors to win the game 3-1. Next up is Hayfield Monday evening at Annandale.

Field Hockey flexed their muscles in their two games this week as they overpowered Centreville Monday and ran away from Justice on Wednesday. Monday was a great match up against the Wildcats that gave the Atoms more confidence that they can compete and beat any team in the area as they came away with the 3-0 win. Wednesday, saw the Atoms hit the road to Justice and come away with a huge district win to run their district record to 4-0. Next up is a trip to Lewis Monday evening.

Football played host to Bishop Ireton Friday evening for homecoming. Early saw the Atoms competing hard against the Cardinals with the first drive carrying deep into Cardinal territory only to see a pass deflect off a receiver and into a Cardinal's defenders hands. The Cardinals scored on the drive and the Atoms struggled to get back that deep the rest of the evening as the Cardinals ran away with the game winning 38-0. The Atoms get some much needed rest before welcoming Justice to J. Wallace Bolding Stadium on October 10.

Boys and Girls Cross Country hit the trail Wednesday and saw both teams continue the upward trend of personal and team best times as they start to hit their strides preparing the National District Championship meet at the end of October.

Atoms Boosters Concession Stand Help

Attention Parents! Volunteers are needed to sell concessions at games throughout the year, starting with fall sports Football and Volleyball. We welcome any and all parents to volunteer but when parents of a particular sport work a game, a portion of concessions sales directly benefit that team. If you are not able to help directly at home games, there are many ways you can get involved with the Atoms Athletics Boosters by attending our monthly meetings or being a team liaison.
