Annandale Community:

There are not enough words to express our appreciation for the (endless) hours that Annandale teachers spend with our kids, so we attempt to express it with FOOD!

The PTSA and the Culinary Arts Department will provide a Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, but we need help with volunteers and some items to round out the menu and make the event a success. Please sign up here to help!

Please drop off donated items to the AHS Main Office no later than 7:00am on Wednesday, May 8. Don't have time to shop? Consider making a monetary donation and we will shop for you! Donations slots are available ($10, $25, or other donation amount). You can select "Sign Up & Pay Now" to donate online or "Sign Up & Pay Later" if you prefer to send your donation in through the AHS office. Donations sent to the office should be in an envelope marked "Teacher Breakfast" with checks made payable to Annandale HS PTSA.

Now through May 17 - Proctors Needed for IB Exams: IB exams are starting soon and we are in need of help to proctor the exams. Volunteers are needed to walk around the testing room occasionally and sit/monitor students. No special training is needed. Each testing room will have at least one experienced proctor that will be in charge of administering the test. We just need additional adult supervision. Volunteers must be 21 or older. Bring your driver’s license to check-in at the main office. Dress casually with comfortable shoes!

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

This weekend I had an opportunity to see the Annandale Theater Company’s production of Mean Girls The Musical, which opened this weekend and will continue on May 3 & 4. If you haven’t yet had an opportunity to see the drama that goes down at North Shore High, I encourage you to check it out. Tickets are on sale now!

This past week, we kicked off testing season with a successful start to SOL and IB testing. At Annandale, we are proud that we have many systems in place to support our students. Our approach to high-quality instruction, along with providing targeted intervention through PRIDE Time, our After School Academic Program (ASAP), and Super Saturdays, goes a long way to meeting students’ needs. Speaking of Super Saturdays, over 290 students have attended Super Saturdays over the past two weekends. We are so proud of our students who show their determination by attending these opportunities. A huge thanks to our teachers, administrators, and instructional coaches for supporting our students beyond the regular school day.

We also know that sometimes students might need additional attempts to be successful. At Annandale, we continue to provide targeted intervention to students who qualify for a retake during the school day and after school. Please see below for more information about how we support students’ SOL retakes, and as always, reach out to your student’s teachers with any questions you may have. 

Finally, May 6-10 is Teacher Appreciation Week! With your support, we will be celebrating the hard work and dedication of our teachers throughout the week. One way you can help is by donating $5-$10 gift cards. If you are able to donate, please drop off gift cards to the Main Office or purchase gift cards via Amazon and have them shipped to Annandale High School. We also encourage you or your student to reach out directly to your student’s teachers with a note of appreciation. Knowing they are making a difference is a priceless gift.

May 2 - Senior Prom, 8-11pm: Prom will be held this Thursday, May 2 from 8:00-11:00pm at The River View at Occoquan. Each senior may purchase up to two (2) tickets. No tickets will be sold at the door. If students would like to bring a guest who does not attend Annandale High School, they must pick up a guest form from the front office and return it to Aaron Schneider, Class of 2024 Administrator, for approval. Students should not purchase tickets until the form is approved.

 

May 3, 4 - Mean Girls, The Musical: High School Version brings the beloved teen comedy to life on stage. Follow Cady Heron as she navigates the treacherous world of high school cliques, led by the infamous Plastics: Regina George, Gretchen Wieners, and Karen Smith. With catchy tunes, sharp humor, and a timely message about the perils of gossip and social hierarchy, this musical adaptation captures the essence of adolescent drama and the quest for acceptance. Join Cady and her classmates as they learn valuable lessons about friendship, betrayal, and the true meaning of being "fetch." Tickets on sale now!

 

May 4 - Super Saturday SOL Prep: Annandale will continue the tradition of success that was established prior to, and even during COVID, by supporting students with Super Saturday SOL prep. This week we will host students preparing for the Algebra 2 & Geometry SOLs. Students will receive breakfast and lunch. Invitations were sent to students and families. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student’s teacher(s).

SOL and IB Exam Schedule

Now through May 31 - SOL Testing: SOL testing will begin tomorrow, April 22 and continue through May 31. Students and families have received email notification of test schedules. Students will also receive email reminders the day before their scheduled test. Please encourage students to check their email to find their test information. If you have any questions about your student’s testing schedule, please contact Meg Anderson.

 

Now through May 17 - IB Testing: IB Testing will be held in various locations in the building beginning this Thursday. Here is the link to the detailed IB Testing calendar with arrival time and test duration.  Locations will be added two weeks prior to testing which will mostly consist of the main gym and the library. Students testing in the afternoon should eat A lunch. Students are required to remain in the testing room for the full duration of each exam. Students should bring pens and pencils as well as a calculator. Backpacks and cell phones will be stored in the back of the room and can not be accessed during testing. If the exam is scheduled to continue after the final school bell, students need to arrange for alternative transportation home. Students with IB approved testing accommodations will be notified prior to testing. Late arrival/early dismissal forms for IB testing dates can be found in the Attendance office after spring break. Autism Acceptance Night: Thursday evening we celebrated Autism Acceptance Night at the varsity baseball game! The night was a huge success for our special education department as many community members and students came out to show their support! Thank you to our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo threw out the first pitch for the game.

 

Sage Nagle Winns Runner Up in STEM for Her Earth Day Innovation Contest: Annandale Junior, Sage Nagle, was featured on WUSA9 for being named runner up in the STEM for Her Earth Day Innovation Contest. Her entry started as her Science Fair project, when she explored ways to tackle oil spills. Congratulations to Sage on this incredible accomplishment! 

 

CAT B Teacher Jill Hunt Recognized at ATS workshop: Congratulations to Jill Hunt who was recognized as an outstanding example of an educator who integrates Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ACC) into daily instruction. She was invited to present at the FCPS AAC Integration Workshop on Tuesday, April 23 at the Instructional Program Support Center (ISPC). Jill had the opportunity to share teaching successes as well as collaborate with other educators across the county. Awesome work Jill!

 

Lauren Paz Soldan, Spanish Teacher, Recognized for NBCT: Spanish Teacher, Lauren Paz Soldan was recognized at last week’s School Board Meeting for earning her National Board Certification. National Board Certification is the most respected professional certification available in education and was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. Congratulations to Ms. Paz Soldan for earning this incredible recognition.

 

Administrative Professional Appreciation Day: We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who contribute to the success of our school. This week we celebrated our administrative staff on Administrative Professionals Day. They deserve a special mention for their unwavering support of our school community. They set the welcoming tone at our school and are always ready to assist anyone, anytime.

 

Annandale Orchestra’s National Anthem Performance at Nationals Park Released! Our Orchestra students performed the National Anthem at the Nationals game against the Houston Astros last week. You can find their performance as it appeared on the Jumbotron online now. They did an incredible job. Check it out!

 

Important Information

SOL Retake Support: At Annandale, we are proud that we have many systems in place to support our students. To that end, when students do not pass their first-attempt SOLs, we double down on our academic support during class time and through PRIDE Time and ASAP to ensure students are successful with additional testing opportunities. Students who qualify for a retake (and their families) will receive an email with information about the retake date as well as the additional support we will provide. Please reach out to your student’s teachers with any questions you may have.

 

Class of 2024 News: Graduation is quickly approaching and we wanted to share important information and dates that will assist seniors, parents and community members in preparing and planning for the end of the school year. Now through May 19 - Yearbooks for Sale: Commemorate the 2023-2024 school year by pre-ordering a yearbook! AHS Yearbooks are now for sale at www.yearbookforever.com. Yearbook distribution begins Monday, May 20.

 

Institute for the Arts Summer Camp: Don’t miss out on this summer’s most exciting arts enrichment program! The Institute for the Arts camp is for students currently in grade 6-11. Students design their own schedules and select from art, music, theater, and dance classes. Learn more on the IFTA webpage. Email [email protected] with any questions. 

 

Students Can Register to Vote at AHS: To support students as citizens, Virginia code now requires schools to hold voter registration opportunities during school: “Each student who is eligible to register to vote shall be provided the opportunity to complete an application form during the normal course of the school day.” Located around the school and near each Social Studies classroom is a flyer to encourage our students to register to vote. There will also be an announcement in the W4 lesson to remind students of this opportunity. Flyers include a QR Code to the Virginia Department of Elections citizen portal to register to vote.

Prom is coming up on May 2 at the River View in Occoquan, and Annandale’s premiere prom fashion shop has you covered. College & Career Planning Google Site: Check out the College & Career Planning Google site, which provides up-to-date information on the college application process; college representative visits; financial aid and FAFSA/VASA workshops; military options; information on apprenticeships; as well as resources for finding a job. The website also provides contact information for our School Counselors, as well as our College and Career Specialist.

 

Thursday College Application Workshops: Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm in Room 90 (near the Cafeteria), Counselors and AVID students will be assisting students with various topics: Making a College List; Transcript Request Form; Common App; Recommendation Requests. Students are welcome to drop in with questions about any aspect of the process.

May 21 - Sports and Band Physicals for the 2023-24 School Year: Students who would like to participate in sports or band next year will need a valid VHSL physical dated after May 1 2023. On May 21 at 5:30pm we will be hosting Sport and Activity Health Screenings. This physical will be good for all of next school year. The cost at Annandale is $50 pre-registration and $60 dollars walk-in. This is a donation to the Athletic Training Program so that we can continue to provide state of the art care for our athletes and band members. Click HERE to sign up. May 21 - Rising 9th Grade Activities/Athletics/Clubs Night: The Activities Office will be hosting an information night for rising 9th grade Activities/Athletics/Clubs Night on May 21 at 6:30pm in the main gym. During this session, we will share information about the sports/seasons that we offer, how to sign up for a sport, and when try-outs for each sport begin. A coach, director, or student representative for each program will be available to answer any questions. Email [email protected] if you have any questions.

 

May 30 - Annandale Dance Clinics: Students Interested in being a part of the dance team next year can check out our dance clinic on May 30 from 3:30-4:30pm in the dance room. Come hear from seniors and learn some basic choreography as you prepare for tryouts in June.

News from the PTSA

AHS Pantry Distribution Every Second Wednesday: We offer bi-monthly family distributions as well as twice weekly student distributions and emergency needs and gift cards for emergency situations that are tracked and distributed with our AHS clinical staff. We have partnerships with Food for Others and Fairfax Diaper as well as other Community businesses, neighborhoods, girl scout troops and churches.

Atom Nation

Friday evening was an awesome evening as Annandale and Thomas Jefferson collaborated to hold the Little River Rivalry at TJ. All of our varsity programs (except track) were in action in a jubilee format. We started the afternoon with tennis at 2:30 and finished with boys lacrosse at 7:15. Both communities had the opportunity to watch multiple events at the same time. The turnout was awesome and we can't wait to host the event next year!

Don't forget about our performing arts as they prepare for their spring concerts and musicals that start with our Spring Musical "Mean Girls" 26 & 27! More information about upcoming concerts and performances below.

Here is a quick recap of first week of spring sports

Baseball had a tough outings in their two games this week. Thursday the Wolves came to Annandale avenged an earlier loss to the Atoms. Friday the Atoms traveled to TJ for the Little River Rivalry. The name of the game was timely hitting. The Atoms put runners on base multiple times throughout the night but could bring them in with timely hitting falling to TJ 3-1. The Atoms hit the road for Lewis Monday.

Softball went 1-1 this week, winning their first game on Thursday for senior night vs Justice in convincing fashion 22-2. The Atoms played at TJ Friday in the Little River Rivalry but unfortunately couldn't keep the momentum going as they fell to 6-3. The Atoms play host to non-district opponent Centreville Tuesday.

Boys Soccer lone game was in the Little River Rivalry at TJ Friday evening. The Atoms took a 1-0 lead into halftime and turned it on in the second half with stiff defense and a second goal to win 2-0! The JV Atoms host Meridian Monday while varsity resumes plays vs district foe Edison Wednesday.

Girls Soccer followed the boys at TJ Friday evening and kept it close for a most of the before the top seed in the district put three in the net to put the Atoms away. The Atoms return Wednesday to host Edison. 

Outdoor Track was at Mt. Vernon Thursday evening where a few more Atoms punched their tickets to the district and region meets in May. Several of those Atoms are very close to qualifying for the state meet as well! They have their final meet of the season Wednesday at Falls Church.

Boys Tennis celebrated their seniors Thursday vs Edison. Each match was very competitive with several being separated by one point in the end but the Eagles were too much for the Atoms. Friday, the Atoms had a great time to start the Little River Rivalry as they played mixed doubles with the girls team before their match vs TJ. TJ is the number one team in the district and possible in the region and it showed as they ran away from the Atoms in each match. The Atoms have two matches left before their district tournament starts Thursday.

Girls Tennis had two matches this week going 1-1. Thursday, the Atoms were able to hang on and beat Edison 5-4! Friday, was a fun night as the Atoms played mixed doubles before their match vs number one seed TJ. Similar to the boys, TJ showed why they are a potential region championship contender winning each match for the night. The Atoms have two matches left before the district tournament Thursday.

Boys Lacrosse traveled for their two games this week. Thursday at Edison, the Atoms played hard and fought to end but couldn't keep up with Edison when the final horn sounded. The Atoms returned to play Friday vs TJ in the Little River Rivalry in the nightcap of the jubilee style event. The Atoms kept it close through the first half before TJ went on a run to put the Atoms away in the second half. The Atoms travel to Osbourn Monday for their final game of the regular season before the district tournament.

Girls Lacrosse played their only game of the week at TJ on Friday. TJ came out strong and scored several goals early to make it a lead that was hard for the Atoms to come back from. The Atoms host Edison Monday for their final game of the regular season.

Annandale High School has a rich history of success, community support, and strong alumni base that stretches back to its creation in 1954. There is a legacy that surrounds Annandale that many are proud to be a part of as it feels like home to  those who have walked our halls. As we move into 2024, we want to provide our students, alumni, and community members the opportunity to be a part of the Annandale legacy. Annandale HS Summer Camps

Looking for fun activities for your child this summer? Annandale High School is offering a variety of summer camps this year for current elementary and middle school students led by our own Annandale coaches. Help spread the word to friends, family and neighbors! More information on signups upcoming!

Registration for all camps can be found HERE. See descriptions of the various camps below. More information can be found at AnnandaleAtoms.net. 

Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp, and they should bring a snack and a water bottle each day. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made out to “Annandale Athletic Boosters”.

Multi-Sport Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 20-23 ($120): Campers will have fun playing a variety of sports including basketball, kickball, volleyball, soccer, and touch football. Basketball - Rising 4th-9th Graders - July 8-12 ($200): Campers will spend each day focused on developing their basketball skills. They will also receive a report card on their basketball abilities, a t-shirt, and a chance to win trophies. Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Autism Acceptance Night

Thursday evening we celebrated Autism Acceptance Night at the varsity baseball game! The night was a huge success for our special education department as many community members and students came out to show their support! Thank you to our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo threw out the first pitch for the game. 

Annandale H.S. Physical Night

Students who would like to participate in sports or band next year will need a valid VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2024. On May 21 at 5:30pm we will be hosting Sport and Activity Health Screenings. This physical will be good for all of next school year. The cost at Annandale is $50 pre-registration and $60 dollars walk-in. Rising 9th Grade Activites/Athletics/Clubs Night

The Activities Office will be hosting an information night for rising 9th grade Activities/Athletics/Clubs Night on May 21 at 6:30pm in the main gym. During this session, we will share information about the sports/seasons that we offer, how to sign up for a sport, and when try-outs for each sport begin. A coach, director, or student representative for each program will be available to answer any questions.

Atoms Athletics Booster Scholarship

Each year the Atoms Athletics Booster Club gives out two $1000 scholarships to our Atoms athletes. The scholarships goes to two senior student-athletes who plan to pursue further education after high school. The student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point average and have played an Atoms Athletic Department recognized sport during their senior year. To complete the application, Click Here.

The Annandale High School Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will present their final concert of the year, combining forces in a musical celebration of “Marches, Movies, and Memories.” The concert is free, and we welcome all our Annandale friends and families to come support our talented band students, most especially our graduating seniors.

We are proud to showcase our 45 graduating Seniors and perform a diverse repertoire of heritage pieces. Come learn about our different cultures of music and celebrate the end of an incredible year of music making!

Broadway Desserts

May 23 & 24 - 7:00pm 

Broadway Desserts will feature all five of the AHS Choirs performing songs from the stage and is a Broadway Review of sorts. Both group and individual acts will be featured from auditions held earlier in the semester. The students prepare the music, pick their costumes and coordinate their choreography for a fantastic evening of entertainment. Learners Permit Testing at Annandale

Is your student eligible for a learner's permit (15 years and 6 months old)? Would you like to avoid the long lines at the DMV? Then we have the fix for you. Annandale 10th grade Driver's Education teachers will be offering learner's permit testing after school at 3:15pm for those students eligible for their permit. Students must register through ACE Website. Partners for Safe Teen Driving

Included in Grade 10 Health & PE is one quarter, or 30-36 hours, of in-classroom driver education. To get your driver’s license in Virginia, you must successfully complete, or pass, the classroom portion of driver education. You must also attend a 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety program, Partners for Safe Teen Driving, or PSTD, with a parent/guardian. Annandale High School is hosting five (5) PSTD presentations this school year, one each quarter and two during the fourth quarter. They are free to students enrolled in Health & PE 10 at Annandale HS and begin at 6:30pm in the auditorium. You must attend with a parent/guardian, arrive ON TIME as the door is locked at 6:30pm, and you must remain the duration of the presentation for your attendance to be verified. Choose a date convenient for you and your parent/guardian. You may attend a session outside of your Driver Education quarter.

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

It was great to see so many of you out at Nats Park Friday night to watch Annie Ray and the Annandale Orchestra perform the National Anthem! These opportunities for us to come together as a community to see Atom Nation being recognized bring me such pride. Students played for the entire stadium, then stayed to watch the game. The musicians were featured on the jumbotron as they performed, then again as they showed their spirit during the “Jump Around” challenge. Congratulations to our Orchestra. They knocked it out of the park! 😀

Spring SOL and IB Exam season begins tomorrow! Yesterday, Biology and Geosystems teachers, admin, and coaches welcomed over 120 students for Super Saturday. On top of the support students are getting during class, PRIDE Time, and our After School Academic Program (ASAP), Super Saturdays provide students one more boost before they take their SOLs. In addition to the academic support they receive on this day, students enjoy breakfast from Anita's and lunch with their teachers and classmates.

Our next Super Saturday, for Algebra 1 and Chemistry students, will be held on April 27. Please reach out to your student’s teachers for any questions about SOLs and ways you can support your student. 

Come join us this Thursday, April 25 at 6:30pm as we cheer on our Varsity Baseball Team and celebrate Autism Acceptance. Our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo will be throwing out the first pitch for the game. Our classes have been working hard and we will be selling various items that they have created. We will also have baked goods and Inclusion Revolution Autism Acceptance t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to our Special Education Department. 

Finally, I encourage you to come out this Friday or Saturday to enjoy the Annandale Theatre Company’s production of Mean Girls! Our students have been hard at work rehearsing and are excited to showcase their talents in this fun teen comedy. You may not know, but I am a big fan of musicals and am excited to bring my children to this performance!

April 25 - Healthy Relationships Advisory Lesson Part 2: Students will continue with part 2 of the Healthy Relationships lesson in which they will learn how consent is a component of establishing boundaries, identify red and green flags in relationships, and identify resources for getting help and staying safe. Counselors will work with the W4 teachers of any students who have been opted out of participating in this lesson. If you have any specific questions, please contact Laurie Ottehenning.

Here is the link to the detailed IB Testing calendar with arrival time and test duration.  Locations will be added two weeks prior to testing which will mostly consist of the main gym and the library. Students testing in the afternoon should eat A lunch. Students are required to remain in the testing room for the full duration of each exam. Students should bring pens and pencils as well as a calculator. Backpacks and cell phones will be stored in the back of the room and can not be accessed during testing. If the exam is scheduled to continue after the final school bell, students need to arrange for alternative transportation home. Students with IB approved testing accommodations will be notified prior to testing. Late arrival/early dismissal forms for IB testing dates can be found in the Attendance office after spring break. April 25 - May 17 - Proctors Needed for IB Exams: IB exams are starting soon and we are in need of help to proctor the exams. Volunteers are needed to walk around the testing room occasionally and sit/monitor students. No special training is needed. Each testing room will have at least one experienced proctor that will be in charge of administering the test. We just need additional adult supervision. Volunteers must be 21 or older. Bring your driver’s license to check-in at the main office. Dress casually with comfortable shoes!

PTSA Nominations for the 2024-25 School Year Are Now Open! If you are interested in serving as an officer or would like to volunteer on a PTSA committee please complete the engagement form. Officer training is provided and committees will be supported by an experienced Board. There are roles for all talents and experience levels. Committee roles range from communication, social media, fundraising, scholarships and awards, All Night Grad, running an online auction and so much more. We need you to make the PTSA successful. Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon: One of the ways Annandale supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In March, students took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

Families will soon be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail. For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor.

 

April 26 - FCHD School Health Services Survey Closes: The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. A survey has been developed by the FCHD to provide feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health Services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week, and can be found here. The survey window is now through April 26.

 

Summer Arts Camp Registration Now Open: Don’t miss out on this summer’s most exciting arts enrichment program! The Institute for the Arts camp is for students currently in grade 6-11. Annandale Students Support ATES Multicultural Night: Students from both schools worked together to collaborate on Annandale Terrace Elementary School’s Multicultural Night. Thanks to family liaisons Maria Mateus, Gisela Sanchez, and Rosario Carrasco for connecting our students and school communities. Our 11 Atoms demonstrated their leadership as they helped set up, greeted families, and manned stations at the photo booth and the “Taste of ATES.” Huge thank you to all who supported this event!

 

Annandale Orchestra Perform National Anthem at Nats Park! Our Orchestra students performed the National Anthem at the Nationals game against the Houston Astros! Students performed for the entire stadium, then stayed to watch the game. The musicians were featured on the jumbotron as they performed, then again as they showed their spirit during the “Jump Around” challenge. Congratulations to our Orchestra. AHS Hosts Parenting Partnership Class: Annandale High School has partnered with Stop Child Abuse Now to bring Fortaleciendo La Familia (Strengthening Families) to Atom Nation. Strengthening Families  is an evidence-based program focusing on building positive relationships between parents and their children. Based in Northern Virginia, SCAN aims to stop child abuse by focusing on the child first with a deep understanding of the complexity of child development, abuse, and trauma.

 

Annandale Hosts World Languages Teachers: This week, World Languages teachers from FCPS spent the day visiting classrooms at Annandale and collaborating with our World Languages team to learn with and from each other around best practices in the World Language classroom.

Opportunities

Students Can Register to Vote at AHS: To support students as citizens, Virginia code now requires schools to hold voter registration opportunities during school: “Each student who is eligible to register to vote shall be provided the opportunity to complete an application form during the normal course of the school day.” Located around the school and near each Social Studies classroom is a flyer to encourage our students to register to vote. There will also be an announcement in the W4 lesson to remind students of this opportunity. Flyers include a QR Code to the Virginia Department of Elections citizen portal to register to vote.

Thursday College Application Workshops: Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm in Room 90 (near the Cafeteria), Counselors and AVID students will be assisting students with various topics: Making a College List; Transcript Request Form; Common App; Recommendation Requests. Students are welcome to drop in with questions about any aspect of the process.

May 21 - Sports and Band Physicals for the 2023-24 School Year: Students who would like to participate in sports or band next year will need a valid VHSL physical dated after May 1 2023. On May 21 at 5:30pm we will be hosting Sport and Activity Health Screenings. This physical will be good for all of next school year. The cost at Annandale is $50 pre-registration and $60 dollars walk-in. This is a donation to the Athletic Training Program so that we can continue to provide state of the art care for our athletes and band members. Click HERE to sign up. News from the PTSA

PTSA Nominations for the 2024-25 School Year Are Now Open! If you are interested in serving as an officer or would like to volunteer on a PTSA committee please complete the engagement form. Officer training is provided and committees will be supported by an experienced Board. There are roles for all talents and experience levels. Committee roles range from communication, social media, fundraising, scholarships and awards, All Night Grad, running an online auction and so much more. We need you to make the PTSA successful. The officer application deadline is May 1st. Committee interest is ongoing.  

 

AHS Pantry Distribution Every Second Wednesday: We offer bi-monthly family distributions as well as twice weekly student distributions and emergency needs and gift cards for emergency situations that are tracked and distributed with our AHS clinical staff. We have partnerships with Food for Others and Fairfax Diaper as well as other Community businesses, neighborhoods, girl scout troops and churches.

Atom Nation

An exciting week of action by the Atoms. We celebrated senior nights, avenged some earlier losses, and provided some OT victories. We are in the final three weeks of the season before postseason play begins and several program are poised to make deep runs into the playoffs. Make sure to come out and support as we wind down the spring season!

GO ATOMS!!! Atoms Weekly Recap

Here is a quick recap of first week of spring sports

Baseball got back on the bump this week with more three districts. Monday saw the Atoms play host to the Lewis Lancers. The Atoms took care of business early and put the Lancers away winning 16-3 in five innings. Tuesday evening, had the Atoms travel over to Falls Church. The Atoms hit the ball all over the field and the pitching held the Jaguars at bay as they avenged an earlier loss to the Jaguars to win 13-4. Friday was the final game of the week with a road game to the number one team in the district, Hayfield Hawks. The Atoms held their own vs the Hawks and battled throughout. It wasn't enough as the Atoms fell 10-7 but it showed that the Atoms are a team to watch out for in the district tournament. The Atoms host Justice and travel to TJ this week. 

Softball had a tough week with their two games against the top two seeds in the district. Tuesday, the Atoms traveled to Falls Church to play a team that had beat them 22-1 earlier in the season. This game was much different and almost had a different result. The Atoms held the lead late into the game but the Jaguars came back in the bottom of the 7th to win it with a walk off 6-5. The Atoms traveled to Hayfield Friday evening but the Hawks proved why they are the number one team in the district winning comfortably over the Atoms. The Atoms play host to Justice Thursday and travel to TJ Friday.

Boys Soccer played host to two pivotal district games this week vs Justice and Lewis. The Atoms squared off against Justice and the fans were treated to a back and forth game. The game was filled with exciting clean competitive play and near missed goals by both teams. When the dust settled, the Atoms prevailed victorious 3-2 over the Wolves. The Atoms returned the field Thursday and played host to Lewis. The Lancers took the game 4-2 but the score doesn't depict how close and competitive the game was as two of the goals by the Lancers were breakaway goals that took a Lancers bounce past a defender. It was a preview to what could be a tournament matchup in the district tournament. The Atoms travel to TJ Friday.

Girls Soccer traveled to Justice and Lewis this week and the word of the week for the team is...GOALS! The Atoms scored 13 goals in two games this week. The first game saw the Atoms visit Justice where the final score was 6-0. It was a dominant victory for the Atoms that continued to Thursday evening at Lewis. The Atoms came out hot again taking an early lead into halftime and putting the Lancers away in the second half winning 7-2! The Atoms return to the field at TJ Friday evening.

Outdoor Track was at Edison this week and more personal records occurred for several Atoms and a few Atoms winning their events. Our high jumpers continue to shine and grow as they look to improve on their performances in preparation for the state meet. The 4x800 boys team won their event by over 15 seconds. Several of our girls long jumpers continue to improve and stay atop the district ranking in their respective events. The Atoms head to Mt. Vernon for their second to last meet before the district championship meet in May. 

Boys Tennis played three matches this week and boys tennis won three matches this week! The Atoms played great tennis the weeks to come away with the victories. I must mention that all three matches were on the road! The Atoms beat Edison 7-2, Justice 5-4, and wrapped up the week with a 6-3 win over Lewis! The schedule gets tight over the final two weeks of the season, thanks to mother nature, but the Atoms look to be built for it. Senior night is Thursday vs Edison, and the Atoms play at TJ Friday.

Girls Tennis had a packed week with three games on the schedule. Monday, the Atoms played host to Edison. It was a great day for the Atoms as they controlled the matches throughout winning 7-2 over the Eagles. The Atoms played host to Justice Tuesday evening but didn't come away with the same result from the night before falling to Justice. Thursday arrived with a home match vs Lewis, where the Atoms celebrated senior night! It was great to celebrate the accomplishments of the seniors. Unfortunately, the Lancers held off the Atoms to get the win. The Atoms travel for their two matches vs Edison and TJ this week.

Boys Lacrosse hosted Lewis for senior night Monday. The Atoms celebrated  over 10 seniors who graduate this June but the celebration didn't stop there. The crowd was treated to an evenly played game that provided more time than the regular periods could hold. The game went into golden goal OT but one OT wasn't enough as the Atoms and Lancers were deadlocked until two minutes to go in the second OT, when the Atoms got the game winning goal to win it 6-5! It was a great game as it positioned the Atoms higher in the district and helps as they look to secure a spot in the regional tournament. The Atoms travel to TJ Friday.

Girls Lacrosse traveled for their lone game of the week to Lewis. The Atoms came together for this one and dominated the game from start to finish winning with a comfortable margin. Multiple Atoms scored throughout as the Atoms look to make a push for a spot in the regional tournament. The Atoms travel to TJ Friday evening.

Annandale HS Summer Camps

Looking for fun activities for your child this summer? Annandale High School is offering a variety of summer camps this year for current elementary and middle school students led by our own Annandale coaches. Help spread the word to friends, family and neighbors! More information on signups upcoming!

Registration for all camps can be found HERE. See descriptions of the various camps below. More information can be found at AnnandaleAtoms.net. 

Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp, and they should bring a snack and a water bottle each day. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made out to “Annandale Athletic Boosters”.

Camp Information

Multi-Sport Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 20-23 ($120): Campers will have fun playing a variety of sports including basketball, kickball, volleyball, soccer, and touch football. They will participate in fun contests and win prizes! Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 8:30am-3:00pm.

Olympics Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 24-27 ($120): This exciting camp features team activities including soccer, volleyball, basketball, touch football, and relay races. Campers will also get a chance to compete and earn medals! Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 8:30am-3:00pm.

Basketball - Rising 4th-9th Graders - July 8-12 ($200): Campers will spend each day focused on developing their basketball skills. They will also receive a report card on their basketball abilities, a t-shirt, and a chance to win trophies. Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Future College Atoms Athletes Signing Day

The Activities Office will be hosting a signing day for our future college athletes on April 22 at 3:15pm in the main gym to honor our student athletes who will be continuing their athletic career in college. 

We would like to invite the families of those student-athletes, teachers, and coaches to honor and recognize the hard work and dedication of our athletes. If you have any questions, please email Brandon Sutphin, Director of Student Activities.

Autism Acceptance Night

Come join us this Thursday, April 25 at 6:30pm as we cheer on our Varsity Baseball Team and celebrate Autism Acceptance. Our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo will be throwing out the first pitch for the game. Our classes have been working hard and we will be selling various items that they have created. We will also have baked goods and Inclusion Revolution Autism Acceptance t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to our Special Education Department. We will be selling Autism Acceptance gear at the game!

Rising 9th Grade Activites/Athletics/Clubs Night

The Activities Office will be hosting an information night for rising 9th grade Activities/Athletics/Clubs Night on May 21 at 6:30pm in the main gym. During this session, we will share information about the sports/seasons that we offer, how to sign up for a sport, and when try-outs for each sport begin. A coach, director, or student representative for each program will be available to answer any questions.

Atoms Athletics Booster Scholarship

Each year the Atoms Athletics Booster Club gives out two $1000 scholarships to our Atoms athletes. The scholarships goes to two senior student-athletes who plan to pursue further education after high school. The student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point average and have played an Atoms Athletic Department recognized sport during their senior year. To complete the application, Click Here.

Interested in being a part of the dance team next year?! Check out our dance clinic on May 30 3:30-4:30pm in the dance room. Come hear from seniors and learn some basic choreography as you prepare for tryouts in June.

Band Concert

The Annandale High School Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will present their final concert of the year, combining forces in a musical celebration of “Marches, Movies, and Memories.” The concert is free, and we welcome all our Annandale friends and families to come support our talented band students, most especially our graduating seniors.

Orchestra is excited to welcome The United States Air Force Strolling Strings and Katie O’Hara LaBrie to premiere her piece “ATOMS!” written for our school! Featured guests of the performance include members of the Washington D.C. Chapter of The Grammy Recording Academy and Virginia House Delegate Watts. We are proud to showcase our 45 graduating Seniors and perform a diverse repertoire of heritage pieces. Come learn about our different cultures of music and celebrate the end of an incredible year of music making!

Broadway Desserts

May 23 & 24 - 7:00pm 

Broadway Desserts will feature all five of the AHS Choirs performing songs from the stage and is a Broadway Review of sorts. Both group and individual acts will be featured from auditions held earlier in the semester. The students prepare the music, pick their costumes and coordinate their choreography for a fantastic evening of entertainment. Please join us on either Thursday, May 23 or Friday, May 24 at 7:00pm in Watson Auditorium! Tickets go on sale April 22.

Learners Permit Testing at Annandale

Is your student eligible for a learner's permit (15 years and 6 months old)? Would you like to avoid the long lines at the DMV? Then we have the fix for you. Annandale 10th grade Driver's Education teachers will be offering learner's permit testing after school at 3:15pm for those students eligible for their permit. Students must register through ACE Website. Partners for Safe Teen Driving

Included in Grade 10 Health & PE is one quarter, or 30-36 hours, of in-classroom driver education. To get your driver’s license in Virginia, you must successfully complete, or pass, the classroom portion of driver education. You must also attend a 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety program, Partners for Safe Teen Driving, or PSTD, with a parent/guardian. Annandale High School is hosting five (5) PSTD presentations this school year, one each quarter and two during the fourth quarter. They are free to students enrolled in Health & PE 10 at Annandale HS and begin at 6:30pm in the auditorium. You must attend with a parent/guardian, arrive ON TIME as the door is locked at 6:30pm, and you must remain the duration of the presentation for your attendance to be verified. Choose a date convenient for you and your parent/guardian. You may attend a session outside of your Driver Education quarter.

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

I hope you have been able to enjoy this wonderful spring weather. Yesterday was a perfect day for Annandale to host schools from throughout FCPS and surrounding divisions at the Special Olympics Inclusion Track Meet! This was a great opportunity for students with disabilities to cheer each other on and participate in a variety of fun events. Superintendent, Dr. Michelle Reid came out to cheer on all of the athletes and chat with staff and families. A big thank you to Head Coach Janan Hawthorne, and Assistant Coaches Katie Shaw and Paul Fink, for supporting this event!

With spring comes graduation preparation. Tomorrow, we will host our first Senior end-of-year event. Our Senior Breakfast will be held during W4 and PRIDE Time. At this event, students will receive important information about end-of-the-year activities, including senior final exams, senior activities, graduation, and the All Night Grad Party. Parents, we need your assistance making this event a success. Please sign up here to support this event through volunteering and/or money to purchase breakfast items.

As a reminder, SOLs and IB exams begin on Monday, April 22, starting with Biology and Earth Science SOLs, as well as Physics and Business IB exams. In addition to the targeted support students receive in class, PRIDE Time and ASAP, we also host “Super Saturdays,” which is held on the Saturday prior to that week’s SOLs. This coming Saturday, our Biology and Geosystems teachers will be working with students to provide one more SOL prep opportunity. For those of you whose students are testing this year, please reach out to your student’s teachers with any questions about ways you can support your student on these important assessments. 

Finally, we are excited to share that Annie Ray and our orchestra students will be playing the National Anthem at the Nats game on Friday, April 19! April 16 - Junior Parent/Student College Night: Please join us on Tuesday, April 16 from 6:00-7:30pm. Our Lead AVID teacher Ms. Wells, and College & Career Specialist, Mr. Yeagley, will talk about how Juniors should prepare for the college application process. After the presentation we will have a panel of admissions representatives from George Mason, Marymount, and Virginia Tech speak about what they look for when reviewing college applications. Students and parents will also have the opportunity to ask the panel questions. The event will take place in Clausen Hall. We hope to see you there! Email Mr. Yeagley if you have questions.

 

April 17 - Purple Up for Military Families: April is the Month of the Military Child! FCPS is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. On Wednesday, April 17, all FCPS employees, students, families, and community members are encouraged to “Purple Up” to show our support for all military-connected families. April 17 - Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PTSD), 6:30pm: Annandale High School will be hosting Partners for Safe Teen Driving on April 17 at 6:30pm. The state of Virginia requires students and their parents to attend one session of Partners for Safe Teen Driving in order to receive their Pink Card (DEC-8). If the parent and student are not in the auditorium at 6:30pm then they will be asked to attend another session. If you have any questions, please email Lizzie McManus.

April 15 - Donations and Volunteers Needed for Senior Breakfast: We will be hosting a Senior Breakfast on April 15 and need your assistance making this event a success by volunteering or donating funds to purchase breakfast items.

The event will begin in the auditorium, where students will receive important information about end-of-year events, including senior exams, senior activities, graduation, and All Night Grad Celebration. After the presentation, students will report to the cafeteria for a breakfast and celebration with their classmates.

 

April 25 - May 17 - Proctors Needed for IB Exams: IB exams are starting soon and we are in need of help to proctor the exams. Volunteers are needed to walk around the testing room occasionally and sit/monitor students. No special training is needed. Each testing room will have at least one experienced proctor that will be in charge of administering the test. We just need additional adult supervision. Volunteers must be 21 or older. Bring your driver’s license to check-in at the main office. Dress casually with comfortable shoes!

Help Recognize our Amazing Teachers! Seeking $5-$10 Gift Card Donations: This year, Teacher Appreciation Week is from May 6-10. PTSA Nominations for the 2024-25 School Year Are Now Open! If you are interested in serving as an officer or would like to volunteer on a PTSA committee please complete the engagement form. Officer training is provided and committees will be supported by an experienced Board. There are roles for all talents and experience levels. Committee roles range from communication, social media, fundraising, scholarships and awards, All Night Grad, running an online auction and so much more. We need you to make the PTSA successful. The officer application deadline is May 1st. Committee interest is ongoing.  

SOL and IB Exam Schedule

April 22 - May 31 - SOL Testing: SOL testing will begin on Monday, April 22 and continue through Friday, May 31. Students will receive an email with their detailed testing schedule.

 

April 25 - May 17- IB Testing: IB Testing will begin on April 25 and be held in various locations in the building. Here is the link to the detailed IB Testing calendar with arrival time and test duration. Locations will be added two weeks prior to testing which will mostly consist of the main gym and the library. Students testing in the afternoon should eat A lunch. Students are required to remain in the testing room for the full duration of each exam. Students should bring pens and pencils as well as a calculator. Backpacks and cell phones will be stored in the back of the room and can not be accessed during testing. If the exam is scheduled to continue after the final school bell, students need to arrange for alternative transportation home. Students with IB approved testing accommodations will be notified prior to testing. Late arrival/early dismissal forms for IB testing dates can be found in the Attendance office after spring break. April 15 - 26 - FCHD School Health Services Survey: The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. A survey has been developed by the FCHD to provide feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health Services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week, and can be found here. The survey window is April 15 - April 26.

 

April 20 - Super Saturdays Begin: Annandale will continue the tradition of success that was established prior to, and even during COVID, by supporting students with Super Saturday SOL prep prior to testing. Students will receive breakfast and lunch. Invitations to students and families will be sent out beginning this week. Below is the Saturday School schedule: April 20 - Biology and Earth Science; April 27 - Algebra 1 and Chemistry; May 4 - Algebra 2 and Geometry; May 11 - Reading. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student’s teacher(s).

Awesome Atoms

Superintendent Michelle Reid Visits Annandale’s Inclusion Track Meet: Annandale hosted Dr. Michelle Reid and schools from throughout FCPS and surrounding divisions at the Special Olympics Inclusion Track Meet! This event was a great opportunity for students with disabilities to cheer each other on and participate in a variety of fun events. A big thank you to Head Coach Janan Hawthorne, and Assistant Coaches Katie Shaw and Paul Fink, for supporting this event.

W4 Activities Day Creates Connection to AHS! We held our final W4 Activities Day this past Monday. It was so fun to see students connect with each other and staff through activities such as playing games and sports, making friendship bracelets, learning Latin dance, scarf making, or just relaxing. Very few other schools the size of Annandale manage to organize an event like this, which we offer once a month. A huge thank you to our Activities Department for taking on this complex planning!

 

Student Services Hosts Post Secondary Planning Night: Our Student Services department hosted a double feature Post Secondary Planning Night and FAFSA Workshop. Students and families had the opportunity to visit with representatives from partner organizations such as EduFuturo, NoVA, Fairfax Fire & Rescue, and several branches of our military as well as get support completing the FAFSA Financial Aid Application. It was an incredible opportunity for students to learn about many of the options available to them post high school.

Annandale Hosts Realtor Open House Event: Annandale High School welcomed local Real Estate Agents this past Tuesday to share information with realtors that will empower them to speak about the current strengths and future direction of the school. In addition, we provided insight into our school and what it offers families who choose to move into our boundaries. If you know of any potential home buys in the area and they have questions about Annadnale High School, please have them reach out to Shawn DeRose.

 

Emmy Award Winner Bernadette Bascom Visits Annandale: On Thursday, Emmy Award winner Bernadette Bascom visited Annandale High School and Annie Ray’s Crescendo Orchestra class. Ms. Bascom started the Music Project, a program designed to use singing to develop children's speaking skills and confidence. She discovered that many of her enrollees were neurodivergent and their speaking and ability to express themselves benefited greatly from the program. A documentary on the program called "Bernadette's Touch" earned her a 2012 Emmy Award for Human Interest Documentary. As a result of her success in the Music Project, Ms. Bascom collaborated with innovators at Microsoft Corporation to create a mobile application that teaches the principles from her in-person Music Project program. As of March 2023, the app called "Speak!" is available in the Apple store and as an early release in the Google play store.

April 25 - Autism Acceptance Night: Please come join us this Thursday at 6:30pm as we cheer on our Varsity Baseball Team and celebrate Autism Acceptance. Our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo will be throwing out the first pitch for the game. Our classes have been working hard and we will be selling various items that they have created. We will also have baked goods and Inclusion Revolution Autism Acceptance t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to our Special Education Department. We will be selling Autism Acceptance gear at the game!

 

May 1 - Nominations for the Bussey Memorial Equity Award Due: The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families. This award recognizes staff or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved. Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1.  The winner will be recognized at the FCPS Equity Symposium on Tuesday, June 18. Thursday College Application Workshops: Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm in Room 90 (near the Cafeteria), Counselors and AVID students will be assisting students with various topics: Making a College List; Transcript Request Form; Common App; Recommendation Requests. Students are welcome to drop in with questions about any aspect of the process.

AHS Pantry Distribution Every Second Wednesday: We offer bi-monthly family distributions as well as twice weekly student distributions and emergency needs and gift cards for emergency situations that are tracked and distributed with our AHS clinical staff. We have partnerships with Food for Others and Fairfax Diaper as well as other Community businesses, neighborhoods, girl scout troops and churches.

Mother nature affected a few more games this week but several programs were able to compete and show off their skills and development. We are gearing up for final regular season play over the next three weeks, so make sure to check out our weekly glance ahead! GO ATOMS!!! Atoms Weekly Recap

Here is a quick recap of first week of spring sports

Baseball hit the road for two key district games vs Edison and Mt. Vernon this week. On Monday, the Atoms battled the Eagles but couldn't pull out the win falling to the Eagles 6-2. The Atoms traveled to Mt. Vernon Thursday and played in a hard fought back and forth game. The Atoms gave a gritty performances holding on for a huge district win 12-10. The Atoms host Lewis Monday evening.  

Softball had a tough week with three games scheduled on the calendar. Monday, the Atoms fell on the road at Edison but came back strong vs Mt. Vernon Thursday. The Atoms played well and gave a full team effort in an impressive 22-15 win over the Majors. The Atoms didn't have a lot of time to celebrate as they had to get back to it Friday evening with a road game at Marshall. The game wasn't the result the Atoms was looking for falling to Marshall but the schedule shapes up for some competitive district games as the Atoms look to make a run a top seed in the district tournament.

Boys Soccer traveled to Hayfield Friday evening for their lone district game of the week. The night saw an exciting back and forth game that ended with an Atoms 2-1 win! It's a huge win for the Atoms as they have two crucial district games this week vs Justice and Lewis. 

Girls Soccer hosted Hayfield for their only game of the week last night. JV came away with a 3-1 win to start the night. Unfortunately, varsity couldn't keep the momentum going as they fell to the Hawks in regular time. The Atoms have two key games next week with away games at Justice (Tuesday) and Lewis (Thursday)

Outdoor Track battled the rain Thursday evening at Hayfield with several Atoms earning more personal best but the week was highlighted Friday evening at South County Stallion Invitational where freshman Connor Uzokoff won the 1600m race. The Atoms continue to impress on the track as many have qualified for the district and region meets in May.

Boys Tennis has a correction from last weeks score vs Mt. Vernon. The Atoms came away with a dominant victory over the Majors. It was recapped incorrectly in last weeks newsletter. This week the Atoms traveled to take on the Jaguars. The Atoms played hard but the Jaguars were too much to overcome. The Atoms return to the court as they travel to Edison Monday.

Girls Tennis had their lone match of the week vs Hayfield rained out Thursday evening. They return to the court Monday vs Edison.

Boys Lacrosse played host to two teams that could see each other in the district championship in Hayfield and Justice. The Atoms traveled to Hayfield Monday and played hard but the Hawks were too strong for the Atoms coming away with the win. The Atoms hosted Justice Thursday evening and it was dreary night all around. The weather was off and on rain and the Wolves got up early and never looked back winning 17-5. The Atoms return to the field in a pivotal match up vs Lewis at home Monday evening.

Girls Lacrosse held senior night Monday evening vs Hayfield. Prior to the game the Atoms honored the 8 seniors who will be graduating in June. It was a special night for the seniors but unfortunately the result didn't turn out the way they had hoped. The Atoms played hard but the Hawks were too much as they came away the win. The Atoms traveled to Justice Thursday evening to take on the Wolves. The Wolves took over early and ran away from the Atoms to get the district win. The Atoms hit the road Monday to take on Lewis.

Swim/Dive Records Updated

This past winter the boys 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, and breaststroke times were broken! Those records were officially updated this week on the Swim/Dive Record board in the main gym lobby. Congrats to our swimmers:

Annandale HS Summer Camps

Looking for fun activities for your child this summer? Annandale High School is offering a variety of summer camps this year for current elementary and middle school students led by our own Annandale coaches. Help spread the word to friends, family and neighbors! More information on signups upcoming!

Registration for all camps can be found HERE. See descriptions of the various camps below. More information can be found at AnnandaleAtoms.net. 

Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp, and they should bring a snack and a water bottle each day. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made out to “Annandale Athletic Boosters”.

Annandale H.S. Physical Night

Students who would like to participate in sports or band next year will need a valid VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2024. On May 21 at 5:30pm we will be hosting Sport and Activity Health Screenings. This physical will be good for all of next school year. The cost at Annandale is $50 pre-registration and $60 dollars walk-in. This is a donation to the Athletic Training Program so that we can continue to provide state of the art care for our athletes and band members. Click HERE to sign up or scan the QR code below. Rising 9th Grade Activites/Athletics/Clubs Night

The Activities Office will be hosting an information night for rising 9th grade Activities/Athletics/Clubs Night on May 21 at 6:30pm in the main gym. During this session, we will share information about the sports/seasons that we offer, how to sign up for a sport, and when try-outs for each sport begin. A coach, director, or student representative for each program will be available to answer any questions.

Atoms Athletics Booster Scholarship

Each year the Atoms Athletics Booster Club gives out two $1000 scholarships to our Atoms athletes. The scholarships goes to two senior student-athletes who plan to pursue further education after high school. The student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point average and have played an Atoms Athletic Department recognized sport during their senior year. To complete the application, Click Here.

Dance Clinics

Interested in being a part of the dance team next year?! Check out our dance clinic on May 30 3:30-4:30pm in the dance room. Come hear from seniors and learn some basic choreography as you prepare for tryouts in June.

Band Concert

The Annandale High School Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will present their final concert of the year, combining forces in a musical celebration of “Marches, Movies, and Memories.” The concert is free, and we welcome all our Annandale friends and families to come support our talented band students, most especially our graduating seniors.

Orchestra is excited to welcome The United States Air Force Strolling Strings and Katie O’Hara LaBrie to premiere her piece “ATOMS!” written for our school! Featured guests of the performance include members of the Washington D.C. Chapter of The Grammy Recording Academy and Virginia House Delegate Watts. We are proud to showcase our 45 graduating Seniors and perform a diverse repertoire of heritage pieces. Come learn about our different cultures of music and celebrate the end of an incredible year of music making!

Broadway Desserts

May 23 & 24 - 7:00pm 

Broadway Desserts will feature all five of the AHS Choirs performing songs from the stage and is a Broadway Review of sorts. Both group and individual acts will be featured from auditions held earlier in the semester. The students prepare the music, pick their costumes and coordinate their choreography for a fantastic evening of entertainment. Please join us on either Thursday, May 23 or Friday, May 24 at 7:00pm in Watson Auditorium! Tickets go on sale April 22.

Learners Permit Testing at Annandale

Is your student eligible for a learner's permit (15 years and 6 months old)? Would you like to avoid the long lines at the DMV? Then we have the fix for you. Annandale 10th grade Driver's Education teachers will be offering learner's permit testing after school at 3:15pm for those students eligible for their permit. Students must register through ACE Website. Check out the dates below and for more information about how to register for testing, email one our Driver's Education teachers Lizzie McManus or Xiomara Hernandez.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving

Included in Grade 10 Health & PE is one quarter, or 30-36 hours, of in-classroom driver education. To get your driver’s license in Virginia, you must successfully complete, or pass, the classroom portion of driver education. You must also attend a 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety program, Partners for Safe Teen Driving, or PSTD, with a parent/guardian. Annandale High School is hosting five (5) PSTD presentations this school year, one each quarter and two during the fourth quarter. They are free to students enrolled in Health & PE 10 at Annandale HS and begin at 6:30pm in the auditorium. You must attend with a parent/guardian, arrive ON TIME as the door is locked at 6:30pm, and you must remain the duration of the presentation for your attendance to be verified. Choose a date convenient for you and your parent/guardian. You may attend a session outside of your Driver Education quarter.

Donations Needed for Senior Breakfast! 

As of today, we are several hundred dollars short of our fundraising goal for donations needed for Senior Breakfast. Click here to donate! 

The event is this Monday and will begin in the auditorium, where students will receive important information about end-of-year events, including senior exams, senior activities, graduation, and all night grad celebration. After the presentation, students will report to the cafeteria for a breakfast and celebration with their classmates.

April 25-May 17 - Proctors Needed for IB Exams: IB exams are starting soon and we are in need of help to proctor the exams. Volunteers are needed to walk around the testing room occasionally and sit/monitor students. No special training is needed. Each testing room will have at least one experienced proctor that will be in charge of administering the test. We just need additional adult supervision. Volunteers must be 21 or older. Bring your driver’s license to check-in at the main office. Dress casually with comfortable shoes!

April 13 - Special Olympics Inclusion Track Meet: Annandale’s 2nd Annual Inclusion Track Meet will be held on April 13 from 9am to 2pm on the track field. Come out to support your Annandale Special Olympics team and enjoy a fun filled day of Inclusion. Clubs, sports teams, and vendors will be on site with music, face painting, yard games, and food. Fun for the whole family!

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

Each week, I use this newsletter to share our story as a school. From the incredible successes of our students to the committed work of our staff, the story of Atom Nation highlights what we achieve when we work together as a community to support our students, our families, and each other. 

As a school, we are committed to the three priorities that anchor the work we do each and every day: relationships and support, high quality instruction, and strong collaboration. We have built systems to support students’ academic intervention, wellness, and connections to school. And knowing that none of us can do this work alone, we have strengthened our collaboration with each other as well as with our families and community. All of this work is what makes Annandale an amazing school.

While many know and understand our story, at times, we encounter comments online or in passing that are not accurate. For that reason, it is important that we share a true picture of what it means to be a part of Atom Nation. On Tuesday, we will be hosting our first ever Realtor Open House, where we will share our story with local realtors, tour the school, and visit classrooms. In addition, we will provide them a “one pager” with specific examples of our success as a school and the ways it is misrepresented online. Check it out below for some eye-opening facts!

April 8 - W4 Activities Day: Our final W4 Activities Day is next Monday. W4 Activities Day is a time set aside during the school day for students to explore clubs and activities and connect with classmates and staff over shared interests. If you have any questions, please contact Bryan Harris.

 

April 8 - Solar Eclipse: A solar eclipse is happening tomorrow, April 8. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage. Here's what you need to know:

• Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
• Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.  
• Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 pm, peaks at 3:20 pm, and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your student to be especially vigilant about eye safety during this time. 

 

April 8 - Atoms Booster Club Meeting: Join us on Monday, April 8 in-person at Annandale High School in the Driver’s Education Room. The meeting will begin at 6pm. All members of the Atoms Booster Club are invited to attend to hear the latest updates on our spring sports and activities. If you have any questions, please contact Brandon Sutphin.

 

April 9 - Realtor Open House: Annandale High School is hosting an “Open House” for local Real Estate Agents on Tuesday, April 9 at 8:30am. We recognize that many potential homebuyers are greatly motivated by the educational opportunities afforded by local schools. The purpose of this event is to share information with realtors that will empower them to speak about the current strengths and future direction of Annandale High School. In addition, we will provide insight into our school and what it offers families who choose to move into our boundaries. If you know of any local realtor who would be interested in attending, they can RSVP here.

 

April 9 - PTSA Meeting, 7pm: Our next PTSA meeting will be on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:00pm in the library. Spanish translation will be available. If you can't attend in person, consider joining us virtually on Zoom. The link will be active 15 minutes prior to the start of the meeting. April 10 - Eid al Fitr Holiday (No School): There is no school on Wednesday, April 10 to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

 

April 25 - May 17 - IB Testing: IB Testing will be held in various locations in the building. Here is the link to the detailed IB Testing calendar with arrival time and test duration. Locations will be added two weeks prior to testing which will mostly consist of the main gym and the library. Students testing in the afternoon should eat A lunch. Students are required to remain in the testing room for the full duration of each exam. Students should bring pens and pencils as well as a calculator. Backpacks and cell phones will be stored in the back of the room and can not be accessed during testing. If the exam is scheduled to continue after the final school bell, students need to arrange for alternative transportation home.

Students with IB approved testing accommodations will be notified prior to testing. Late arrival/early dismissal forms for IB testing dates can be found in the Attendance Office. Contact Linda Bradshaw with any questions.

Important Information

Personalized Student Progress Reports: Last week, parents should have received a personalized student progress report email which includes students’ grades as well as any academic interventions or supports the student is receiving. In that email, we also provide ways families can support their student, including sitting with them to check and discuss their progress, as well as some guiding questions to talk about school. 

You can also view your student's grades by logging into SIS ParentVUE. If you have questions about a particular class, please reach out to the teacher. Their email address can be found on our staff directory or in ParentVue.

 

April 15 - 26 - FCHD School Health Services Survey: The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. A survey has been developed by the FCHD to provide feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health Services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week, and can be found here. The survey window is April 15 - April 26.

 

April 20 - Super Saturdays Begin: Annandale will continue the tradition of success that was established prior to, and even during COVID, by supporting students with Super Saturday SOL prep prior to testing. Students will receive breakfast and lunch. Invitations to students and families will be sent out beginning this week. Below is the Saturday School schedule: April 20 - Biology and Earth Science; April 27 - Algebra 1 and Chemistry; May 4 - Algebra 2 and Geometry; May 11 - Reading. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student’s teacher(s).

Celebrating Annandale HS Assistant Principals: This past week marked National Assistant Principal’s week. Our team of Assistant Principals do an incredible job every day supporting our students, families, and staff. They serve as instructional leaders, collaborate with teacher teams to ensure every student is receiving the support they need, and work to create a safe and welcoming environment here at Annandale. A huge thank you to our Assistant Principals Sarah Eqab, Donna Higgins, Hanna Langstein, Aaron Schneider, and Kara Franklin Taylor!

 

Student Equity Club Promotes Mental Health Awareness: The Student Equity Club’s new Mental Health Committee compiled contact and room information, along with friendly photos for each mental health worker at AHS into a flyer. They distributed the flyers to classrooms so teachers can display them for students who might be seeking someone to listen.

 

Pyramid Art Show Success! Last week, Annandale hosted the Pyramid Art Show. This show is an opportunity to showcase student art work from our feeder elementary and middle schools alongside the work of Annandale students. This is a unique event in which our high school students have the opportunity to reconnect with their elementary and middle school Art teachers, and our future Atoms can see the many paths they can take to explore the Arts when they come to Annandale. Special thanks to Carmen Lucas, Erin Mahoney, Luis Navas Reyes and Megan Mooney for mounting this fabulous display of the talent in our community.

April 17 - Purple Up for Military Families: April is the Month of the Military Child! FCPS is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. On Wednesday, April 17, all FCPS employees, students, families, and community members are encouraged to “Purple Up” to show our support for all military-connected families. April 17 - Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PTSD), 6:30pm: Annandale High School will be hosting Partners for Safe Teen Driving on April 17 at 6:30pm. The state of Virginia requires students and their parents to attend one session of Partners for Safe Teen Driving in order to receive their Pink Card (DEC-8). If the parent and student are not in the auditorium at 6:30pm then they will be asked to attend another session. If you have any questions, please email Lizzie McManus.

 

April 25 - Autism Acceptance Night: Please come join us this Thursday at 6:30pm as we cheer on our Varsity Baseball Team and celebrate Autism Acceptance. Our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo will be throwing out the first pitch for the game. Our classes have been working hard and we will be selling various items that they have created. We will also have baked goods and Inclusion Revolution Autism Acceptance t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to our Special Education Department. We will be selling Autism Acceptance gear at the game!

 

May 1 - Nominations for the Bussey Memorial Equity Award Due: The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families. This award recognizes staff or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved. Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1.  The winner will be recognized at the FCPS Equity Symposium on Tuesday, June 18. College Admission & Financial Aid

April 10 - NOVA Regional College Fair: The Office of Admissions at George Mason University is holding its annual Northern Virginia Regional College Fair (NVRCF) on Wednesday, April 10 from 6:30-8:30pm at EagleBank Arena. Students will have the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives from more than 200 colleges and universities. This will be a great opportunity to get students motivated and excited about their post-secondary plans while equipping them with the tools and information necessary to successfully navigate the college search and application process.

 

April 11 - Options After High School (Postsecondary Planning): On Thursday, April 11 from 6pm - 8pm, Annandale High School Student services will be presenting on various options for students after high school. Topics to be covered are four year universities (Bachelor’s Degree), Northern Virginia Community College “NOVA” (Associate’s Degree with option to transfer to a four year university), apprenticeships (Electricians, Carpenters, Plumbers, HVAC), military (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force), and Edu-Futuro (To empower immigrant and underserved youth and families through mentorship, education, leadership development, parent engagement, and workforce development.)

There will be a brief presentation followed by breakout sessions to speak in further detail and answer your questions about the various options. The presentation will be held in Clausen Hall and will have Spanish, Vietnamese, Amharic, and Arabic translators. All Junior and Senior students and parents are invited to attend!

 

April 11 - FAFSA/VASA Completion Workshop: On Thursday, April 11 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm Annandale High School Student Services will be hosting a FAFSA/VASA completion workshop in the Parent Liaison Office. If you would like help completing these forms in order to be considered for financial aid please attend this event. Students and parents/guardians should both attend and please make sure to bring 2022 tax information.

 

April 16 - Junior Parent/Student College Night: Please join us on Tuesday, April 16 from 6:00-7:30pm. Our Lead AVID teacher Ms. Wells, and College & Career Specialist, Mr. Yeagley, will talk about how Juniors should prepare for the college application process. After the presentation we will have a panel of admissions representatives from George Mason, Marymount, and Virginia Tech speak about what they look for when reviewing college applications. Students and parents will also have the opportunity to ask the panel questions. The event will take place in Clausen Hall. We hope to see you there! College & Career Planning Google Site: Check out the College & Career Planning Google site, which provides up-to-date information on the college application process; college representative visits; financial aid and FAFSA/VASA workshops; military options; information on apprenticeships; as well as resources for finding a job. The website also provides contact information for our School Counselors, as well as our College and Career Specialist.

 

Thursday College Application Workshops: Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm in Room 90 (near the Cafeteria), Counselors and AVID students will be assisting students with various topics: Making a College List; Transcript Request Form; Common App; Recommendation Requests. Students are welcome to drop in with questions about any aspect of the process.

PTSA Nominating Committee: Each year the PTSA forms a committee to identify people interested in serving as PTSA officers. The Nominating Committee advertises the opportunities available and explains how to apply, receives nominations and identifies potential candidates, and presents a slate of nominees at the April PTSA general membership meeting. AHS Pantry Distribution Every Second Wednesday: We offer bi-monthly family distributions as well as twice weekly student distributions and emergency needs and gift cards for emergency situations that are tracked and distributed with our AHS clinical staff. We have partnerships with Food for Others and Fairfax Diaper as well as other Community businesses, neighborhoods, girl scout troops and churches.

Well the Atoms battled mother nature all week with several programs having games postponed to later dates. There was some action throughout the week with the majority of it happening on Friday. Several programs continue to show just how good they can be and the final month of the spring season is going to be exciting so don't miss out!

Here is a quick recap of first week of spring sports

Baseball had two games scheduled but only played one thanks to mother nature. However, that game did not disappoint as the Atoms jumped out to an early 3-0 before TJ battled back to make 3-3 in the 3rd inning. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the 7th when the Atoms walked it off to win an exciting game 4-3. The Atoms move to 3-2 in the district as they prepare for their next game vs Edison Monday evening.

Softball had the same fortunate with mother nature and played TJ last night. The Atoms jumped out early and never looked back. It was 14-5 in the 5th but the Atoms couldn't close out the slaughter rule in 5 innings and saw TJ cut the game to 15-11. The Atoms scored 4 in the bottom of the 6th to win comfortably 19-11. They see action Monday vs Edison. 

Boys Soccer had one game this week versus district foe Falls Church. It was a clean competitive game throughout but the Jaguars put 2 on the board in the first half and played solid defense in the second half to keep the Atoms off the board and win 2-0. The Atoms travel to Hayfield next Friday.

Girls Soccer traveled Falls Church Thursday evening and played an exciting game vs the Jaguars. Regular time ended in a 1-1 tie and took the game to OT. The Jaguars squeezed one past in OT to get the 2-1 win over the Atoms. The Atoms host Hayfield next Friday.

Outdoor Track battled the rain Tuesday at Lewis but saw impressive showings by multiple athletes. A few personal best occurred throughout the meet with a couple more athletes qualifying for the district meet in May. The Atoms hit the track again at Hayfield Thursday afternoon.

Boys Tennis continues to show their growth but it was enough in their only match of the week at Mt. Vernon. The Atoms played well taking a few matches deep into but in the end the Majors came away victorious. The Atoms host Hayfield Thursday afternoon.

Girls Tennis got the win yesterday over Mt. Vernon. The Atoms ran away with the Match winning 5-1 as the match ended before doubles occurred. The Atoms were pretty dominant across the board and look to continue the upward trend and growth as they travel to Hayfield Thursday.

Boys Lacrosse hosted Falls Church for their only game of the week Friday evening. The Jaguars were a little too much the Atoms as they showed their strength and ran away from the Atoms early. The Atoms continue to show growth and improvement and look to get back at it Monday as they travel to Hayfield.

Girls Lacrosse split their two games this week. The Atoms started off with an impressive win over Mt. Vernon Wednesday evening 17-6! It was a complete team win for the Atoms. The second game didn't have the same results as they fell to district rival Falls Church Friday evening. The Atoms host Hayfield Monday evening for senior night. 

Swim/Dive Records Updated

This past winter the boys 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, and breaststroke times were broken! Those records were officially updated this week on the Swim/Dive Record board in the main gym lobby. Congrats to our swimmers:

Annandale HS Summer Camps

Looking for fun activities for your child this summer? Annandale High School is offering a variety of summer camps this year for current elementary and middle school students led by our own Annandale coaches. Help spread the word to friends, family and neighbors! More information on signups upcoming!

Registration for all camps can be found HERE. See descriptions of the various camps below. More information can be found at AnnandaleAtoms.net. 

Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp, and they should bring a snack and a water bottle each day. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made out to “Annandale Athletic Boosters”.

Camp Information

Multi-Sport Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 20-23 ($120): Campers will have fun playing a variety of sports including basketball, kickball, volleyball, soccer, and touch football. They will participate in fun contests and win prizes! Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 8:30am-3:00pm.

Olympics Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 24-27 ($120): This exciting camp features team activities including soccer, volleyball, basketball, touch football, and relay races. Campers will also get a chance to compete and earn medals! Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 8:30am-3:00pm.

Basketball - Rising 4th-9th Graders - July 8-12 ($200): Campers will spend each day focused on developing their basketball skills. They will also receive a report card on their basketball abilities, a t-shirt, and a chance to win trophies. Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Annandale Special Olympics Track Meet

Annandale’s Inclusion Track Meet will be held on Saturday, April 13 from 9:00am to 2:00pm on the track field.

Come out to support your Annandale Special Olympics team and enjoy a fun filled day of Inclusion. Vendors will be on sight with music, face painting, yard games, and food. Fun for the whole family!

UPDATED DATE: Future College Atoms Athletes Signing Day

The Activities Office will be hosting a signing day for our future college athletes on April 22 at 3:15pm in the main gym to honor our student athletes who will be continuing their athletic career in college. 

We would like to invite the families of those student-athletes, teachers, and coaches to honor and recognize the hard work and dedication of our athletes. If you have any questions, please email Brandon Sutphin, Director of Student Activities.

Autism Acceptance Night

Come join us this Thursday, April 25 at 6:30pm as we cheer on our Varsity Baseball Team and celebrate Autism Acceptance. Our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo will be throwing out the first pitch for the game. Our classes have been working hard and we will be selling various items that they have created. We will also have baked goods and Inclusion Revolution Autism Acceptance t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to our Special Education Department. We will be selling Autism Acceptance gear at the game!

Annandale H.S. Physical Night

Students who would like to participate in sports or band next year will need a valid VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2024. On May 21 at 5:30pm we will be hosting Sport and Activity Health Screenings. This physical will be good for all of next school year. The cost at Annandale is $50 pre-registration and $60 dollars walk-in. This is a donation to the Athletic Training Program so that we can continue to provide state of the art care for our athletes and band members. Click HERE to sign up or scan the QR code below. Rising 9th Grade Activites/Athletics/Clubs Night

The Activities Office will be hosting an information night for rising 9th grade Activities/Athletics/Clubs Night on May 21 at 6:30pm in the main gym. During this session, we will share information about the sports/seasons that we offer, how to sign up for a sport, and when try-outs for each sport begin. A coach, director, or student representative for each program will be available to answer any questions.

Atoms Athletics Booster Scholarship

Each year the Atoms Athletics Booster Club gives out two $1000 scholarships to our Atoms athletes. The scholarships goes to two senior student-athletes who plan to pursue further education after high school. The student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point average and have played an Atoms Athletic Department recognized sport during their senior year. To complete the application, Click Here.

Learners Permit Testing at Annandale

Is your student eligible for a learner's permit (15 years and 6 months old)? Would you like to avoid the long lines at the DMV? Then we have the fix for you. Annandale 10th grade Driver's Education teachers will be offering learner's permit testing after school at 3:15pm for those students eligible for their permit. Students must register through ACE Website. Partners for Safe Teen Driving

Included in Grade 10 Health & PE is one quarter, or 30-36 hours, of in-classroom driver education. To get your driver’s license in Virginia, you must successfully complete, or pass, the classroom portion of driver education. You must also attend a 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety program, Partners for Safe Teen Driving, or PSTD, with a parent/guardian. Annandale High School is hosting five (5) PSTD presentations this school year, one each quarter and two during the fourth quarter. They are free to students enrolled in Health & PE 10 at Annandale HS and begin at 6:30pm in the auditorium. You must attend with a parent/guardian, arrive ON TIME as the door is locked at 6:30pm, and you must remain the duration of the presentation for your attendance to be verified. Choose a date convenient for you and your parent/guardian. You may attend a session outside of your Driver Education quarter.

April 15 - Donations and Volunteers Needed for Senior Breakfast: We will be hosting a Senior Breakfast on April 15 and need your assistance making this event a success. Register here to volunteer and/or donate! 

The event will begin in the auditorium, where students will receive important information about end-of-year events, including senior exams, senior activities, graduation, and All Night Grad Celebration. After the presentation, students will report to the cafeteria for a breakfast and celebration with their classmates.

 

April 25-May 17 - Proctors Needed for IB Exams: IB exams are starting soon and we are in need of help to proctor the exams. Volunteers are needed to walk around the testing room occasionally and sit/monitor students. No special training is needed. Each testing room will have at least one experienced proctor that will be in charge of administering the test. We just need additional adult supervision. Volunteers must be 21 or older. Bring your driver’s license to check-in at the main office. Dress casually with comfortable shoes!

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

I hope you had a great spring break. It is hard to believe, but Wednesday marks the start of the fourth quarter. For many of our students, this is a very busy time. SOLs and IB exams begin in just three weeks. Our continued focus on high quality instruction supported by targeted intervention through PRIDE Time and ASAP means we are doing everything we can to ensure our students are successful. 

At Annandale, we work together to support our students. This week, families will receive a personalized student progress report email which includes students’ grades as well as any academic interventions or supports the student is receiving. In that email, we also provide ways families can support their student, including sitting with them to check and discuss their progress, as well as some guiding questions to talk about school. Thank you for everything you do to support us and your students!

Finally, this week is National Assistant Principal’s week. Our team of Assistant Principals do an incredible job every day supporting our students, families, and staff. They serve as instructional leaders, collaborate to make sure every student is receiving the support they need, and ensure our school is a safe place. A huge thank you to our Assistant Principals Sarah Eqab, Kara Franklin-Taylor, Donna Higgins, Hanna Langstein, and Aaron Schneider.

April 4 - Annandale Pyramid Art Show, 6:00pm: The Annandale Pyramid, including Annandale Terrace ES, Braddock ES, Bren Mar Park ES, Columbia ES, North Springfield ES, Weyanoke ES, Holmes MS, Poe MS, and Annandale HS will come together to celebrate our young artists. With the help of the pyramid art teachers, our school’s chapter of the National Art Honor Society helps prep the show, gives awards, and provides activities for kids of all ages. The artwork will feature works from students in grades K-12 and a variety of mediums and will be displayed through April 29. Come check out our incredible artists!

 

April 8 - W4 Activities Day: Our final W4 Activities Day is next Monday. W4 Activities Day is a time set aside during the school day for students to explore clubs and activities and connect with classmates and staff over shared interests. If you have any questions, please contact Bryan Harris.

April 10 - Eid al Fitr Holiday (No School): There is no school on Wednesday, April 10 to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

 

April 25-May 17 - IB Testing: IB Testing will be held in various locations in the building. Here is the link to the detailed IB Testing calendar with arrival time and test duration.  Locations will be added two weeks prior to testing which will mostly consist of the main gym and the library. Students testing in the afternoon should eat A lunch. Students are required to remain in the testing room for the full duration of each exam. Students should bring pens and pencils as well as a calculator. Backpacks and cell phones will be stored in the back of the room and can not be accessed during testing. If the exam is scheduled to continue after the final school bell, students need to arrange for alternative transportation home.

Students with IB approved testing accommodations will be notified prior to testing. Late arrival/early dismissal forms for IB testing dates can be found in the Attendance Office. Contact Linda Bradshaw with any questions.

Awesome Atoms

Debate Team Reaches Round 5 of Regionals: The Annandale Debate Team traveled to Wakefield High School for the 2024 regional tournament.  Rebeka Balibuno and Cecilia Marigliano participated in the Lincoln-Douglas 1v1 debates and made it through 5 rounds of competition despite this being their first ever competition. This is also the first time in many years that Annandale has fielded a debate team.  We are so proud of these young ladies! Senior, Husna Basiri, Recognized at Fairfax Peace Awards: Husna was one of 27 recipients of a 2024 Student Peace Award of Fairfax County who were honored at a reception on March 10. Representative Gerry Connolly introduced a Resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives listing all the recipients and recognizing them as “active in promoting peace or removing the causes of conflict.” Husna founded the Dunya Club, which organizes field trips, college visits, and advocates for the needs of refugees with local media stations. In addition she has served as a Student Equity Ambassador Leader (SEAL), and Co-President of the SEALS. In this role, she established a Mental Health Committee within the organization. Congratulations, Husna!

 

Performing Arts Students Visit NYC: This past week, Annandale Performing Arts took their annual combined Spring Trip to New York City. Students got to tour Lincoln Center, see the Broadway show Hadestown, participate in a workshop with the cast, and see Sterling Elliot's cello recital at Juilliard. Prior to the trip, they had masterclasses with members of the National Symphony Orchestra and The United States Army Band. Students walked away from the trip with a greater appreciation for their peers' performing arts discipline, a deeper understanding of their craft, and a discovery of different career paths they might consider.

 

Atoms Writing Center Tutors Present at Annual Conference: Atoms Writing Center tutors Safa Touri and Margaret Tran were selected to present at the Secondary Schools Writing Center Association's annual conference this year. On Saturday, March 16th, they delivered a presentation entitled "Straying Away from Paper and Pencil: Understanding Minimalist Tutoring to Encourage Self-Regulated Writing Inside and Outside the Center." Tutors and Writing Center Directors from across the country attended their session to learn how to help tutees thrive by teaching them the skills they need to improve their writing on their own after working with a writing center tutor.

 

ATES Students Hold Dance Night at Annandale: This past weekend Annandale High School hosted Annandale Terrace Elementary School for their annual Dance Night. Each year the Annandale Terrace P.E. and Music departments collaborate to teach students different dances throughout their dance unit. Dance Night is an opportunity for the students to perform dances for their families and showcase their achievements.

 

Annandale English Leaders to Present at WiDA Annual Conference: Congratulations to Assistant Principal Dr. Sarah Eqab, and Instructional Coaches Jeniva Miller and Mary Johnson who will be presenting a workshop at 2024 WIDA Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA. Their 2.5 hour workshop, titled From All to Small: Empowering Our Students through Small-Group Instruction, has been accepted for presentation at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center (DLCC). 

 

Atoms Writing Center Game Night a Success! Thank you everyone for a successful AWC game night! There was a lot of games and snacks for everyone to try, and it was a lot of fun seeing so many people enjoy it.

 

AHS Celebrates Students of the Month: Congratulations to Ami Bernard, Josue Bonilla-Gomez, Tien Bui, Sophie Chavez, Ryan Hunt, Thomas Nields, Sylar Simmavong, Asmeret Tekle, and Abel Yeneneh for being selected as our March Students of the Month. Each month, Annandale teachers nominate one student who exemplifies one of our Atoms Agreements of Empathy, Determination, and Safety. In March, our focus was on Safety. Congratulations to all for being selected as our Student of the Month winners! Our next round of Students of the Month for April will focus on students that exemplify the Atom Agreement of Empathy.

Principal Evaluation Survey - Now Open! Annandale HS parents/guardians recently received an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school. ​​​​​​The questionnaire is open now through April 5. Please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

 

April 8 - Solar Eclipse: A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8 and will be viewable, depending on weather, in the Fairfax County area. This timing overlaps with some dismissal times and it is crucial that schools reiterate the importance of safe viewing practices. FCPS safety guidelines do not permit direct viewing of the sun even with protective eyewear and encourages indirect (projection) viewing, including solar boxes and pinhole projectors. FCPS has created a Solar Eclipse Resources website to access resources that include safe viewing practices and a NASA link for the eclipse live stream. 

 

Mid-April - Super Saturdays Begin: Annandale will continue the tradition of success that was established prior to, and even during COVID, by supporting students with Super Saturday SOL prep prior to testing. Invitations will be going out to students to attend these events beginning in late March/early April. Below is the tentative Saturday School schedule: April 20 - Biology and Earth Science; April 27 - Algebra 1 and Chemistry; May 4 - Algebra 2 and Geometry; May 11 - Reading.

April 13 - Special Olympics Inclusion Track Meet: Annandale’s 2nd Annual Inclusion Track Meet will be held on April 13 from 9am to 2pm on the track field. Come out to support your Annandale Special Olympics team and enjoy a fun filled day of Inclusion. Clubs, sports teams, and vendors will be on sight with music, face painting, yard games, and food. Fun for the whole family!

 

April 17 - Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PTSD), 6:30pm: Annandale High School will be hosting Partners for Safe Teen Driving on April 17 at 6:30pm. The state of Virginia requires students and their parents to attend one session of Partners for Safe Teen Driving in order to receive their Pink Card (DEC-8). If the parent and student are not in the auditorium at 6:30pm then they will be asked to attend another session. If you have any questions, please email Lizzie McManus.

 

April 25 - Autism Acceptance Night: Please come join us this Thursday at 6:30pm as we cheer on our Varsity Baseball Team and celebrate Autism Acceptance. Our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo will be throwing out the first pitch for the game. Our classes have been working hard and we will be selling various items that they have created. We will also have baked goods and Inclusion Revolution Autism Acceptance t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to our Special Education Department. We will be selling Autism Acceptance gear at the game!

Sign up for a writing conference with the AWC: The trained peer tutors of the Atoms Writing Center will continue to provide support for students with writing in any class. Need Help in Your Class? Stay With Your Teacher After School! Annandale High School offers late bus transportation three (3) days per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. All teachers stay after school at least one day a week to provide academic support for students. Please refer to this list to see which day your student’s teacher is available after school.

 

Annandale Tutoring Center Open Mondays: Students can now get tutoring from AVID and honor society members, every Monday in Room 287 from 3:00-4:00pm. Tutors will be available to help in math, science and social studies. Contact Ms. Michelle Lukacs, AVID and History teacher, with questions.

College Admission & Financial Aid

April 10 - NOVA Regional College Fair: The Office of Admissions at George Mason University is holding its annual Northern Virginia Regional College Fair (NVRCF) on Wednesday, April 10 from 6:30-8:30pm at EagleBank Arena. Students will have the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives from more than 200 colleges and universities. This will be a great opportunity to get students motivated and excited about their post-secondary plans while equipping them with the tools and information necessary to successfully navigate the college search and application process.

 

April 11 - Options After High School (Postsecondary Planning): On Thursday, April 11 from 6pm - 8pm Annandale High School Student services will be presenting on various options for students after high school. Topics to be covered are four year universities (Bachelor’s Degree), Northern Virginia Community College “NOVA” (Associate’s Degree with option to transfer to a four year university), apprenticeships (Electricians, Carpenters, Plumbers, HVAC), military (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force), and Edu-Futuro (To empower immigrant and underserved youth and families through mentorship, education, leadership development, parent engagement, and workforce development.)

There will be a brief presentation followed by breakout sessions to speak in further detail and answer your questions about the various options. The presentation will be held in Clausen Hall and will have Spanish, Vietnamese, Amharic, and Arabic translators. All Junior and Senior students and parents are invited to attend!

 

April 11 - FAFSA/VASA Completion Workshop: On Thursday, April 11 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm Annandale High School Student Services will be hosting a FAFSA/VASA completion workshop in the Parent Liaison Office. If you would like help completing these forms in order to be considered for financial aid please attend this event. Students and parents/guardians should both attend and please make sure to bring 2022 tax information.

 

April 16 - Junior Parent/Student College Night: Please join us on Tuesday, April 16 from 6:00-7:30pm. Our Lead AVID teacher Ms. Wells, and College & Career Specialist, Mr. Yeagley, will talk about how Juniors should prepare for the college application process. After the presentation we will have a panel of admissions representatives from George Mason, Marymount, and Virginia Tech speak about what they look for when reviewing college applications. Students and parents will also have the opportunity to ask the panel questions. The event will take place in Clausen Hall. We hope to see you there! College & Career Planning Google Site: Check out the College & Career Planning Google site, which provides up-to-date information on the college application process; college representative visits; financial aid and FAFSA/VASA workshops; military options; information on apprenticeships; as well as resources for finding a job. The website also provides contact information for our School Counselors, as well as our College and Career Specialist.

 

Thursday College Application Workshops: Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm in Room 90 (near the Cafeteria), Counselors and AVID students will be assisting students with various topics: Making a College List; Transcript Request Form; Common App; Recommendation Requests. Students are welcome to drop in with questions about any aspect of the process.

Volunteers Wanted - AHS Pantry: The AHS Pantry needs your help! Each month, the Annandale Pantry distributes bags of food to Annandale families in need. Distribution dates are primarily on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 3:30-5:00pm. Please consider volunteering to assist in a distribution. Volunteers can sign up here.

 

AHS Pantry Distribution Every Second Wednesday: We offer bi-monthly family distributions as well as twice weekly student distributions and emergency needs and gift cards for emergency situations that are tracked and distributed with our AHS clinical staff. We have partnerships with Food for Others and Fairfax Diaper as well as other Community businesses, neighborhoods, girl scout troops and churches.

Here is a quick recap of first week of spring sports

Baseball played three games in the Grant and Danny 106.7 The Fan Baseball Tournament at Annandale over the break. The Atoms went 1-2 in the three games falling to TJ and Meridian but prevailing over Potomac in the final game of the tournament. The Atoms open back up with Lewis at home on Tuesday, April 2.

Annandale HS Summer Camps

Looking for fun activities for your child this summer? Annandale High School is offering a variety of summer camps this year for current elementary and middle school students led by our own Annandale coaches. Help spread the word to friends, family and neighbors! More information on signups upcoming!

Registration for all camps can be found HERE. See descriptions of the various camps below. More information can be found at AnnandaleAtoms.net. 

Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp, and they should bring a snack and a water bottle each day. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made out to “Annandale Athletic Boosters”.

Multi-Sport Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 20-23 ($120): Campers will have fun playing a variety of sports including basketball, kickball, volleyball, soccer, and touch football. They will participate in fun contests and win prizes! Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 8:30am-3:00pm.

Olympics Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 24-27 ($120): This exciting camp features team activities including soccer, volleyball, basketball, touch football, and relay races. Campers will also get a chance to compete and earn medals! Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 8:30am-3:00pm.

Basketball - Rising 4th-9th Graders - July 8-12 ($200): Campers will spend each day focused on developing their basketball skills. Annandale H.S. Physical Night

Students who would like to participate in sports or band next year will need a valid VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2024. On May 21 at 5:30pm we will be hosting Sport and Activity Health Screenings. This physical will be good for all of next school year. The cost at Annandale is $50 pre-registration and $60 dollars walk-in. This is a donation to the Athletic Training Program so that we can continue to provide state of the art care for our athletes and band members. Click HERE to sign up or scan the QR code below. Rising 9th Grade Activites/Athletics/Clubs Night

The Activities Office will be hosting an information night for rising 9th grade Activities/Athletics/Clubs Night on May 21 at 6:30pm in the main gym. During this session, we will share information about the sports/seasons that we offer, how to sign up for a sport, and when try-outs for each sport begin. A coach, director, or student representative for each program will be available to answer any questions.

Atoms Athletics Booster Scholarship

Each year the Atoms Athletics Booster Club gives out two $1000 scholarships to our Atoms athletes. The scholarships goes to two senior student-athletes who plan to pursue further education after high school. The student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point average and have played an Atoms Athletic Department recognized sport during their senior year. To complete the application, Click Here.

Legacy Studios is excited to photograph Annandale High School's 2024 athletic teams!  All sports team images will be available to view and order online after picture day.  Here are a few tips for accessing your images: 

• Images can be accessed via this link: Legacy Studios Events or by going to events.legacystudios.com. 
• Please use code 4542E24 to view your images on the website. 
• You will have the option to select the images you'd like to order, ie: team, individual, etc. as well as the border for your prints and the text you'd like on the images, including your athlete's name.

Learners Permit Testing at Annandale

Is your student eligible for a learner's permit (15 years and 6 months old)? Would you like to avoid the long lines at the DMV? Then we have the fix for you. Annandale 10th grade Driver's Education teachers will be offering learner's permit testing after school at 3:15pm for those students eligible for their permit. Students must register through ACE Website. Partners for Safe Teen Driving

Included in Grade 10 Health & PE is one quarter, or 30-36 hours, of in-classroom driver education. To get your driver’s license in Virginia, you must successfully complete, or pass, the classroom portion of driver education. You must also attend a 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety program, Partners for Safe Teen Driving, or PSTD, with a parent/guardian. Annandale High School is hosting five (5) PSTD presentations this school year, one each quarter and two during the fourth quarter. They are free to students enrolled in Health & PE 10 at Annandale HS and begin at 6:30pm in the auditorium. You must attend with a parent/guardian, arrive ON TIME as the door is locked at 6:30pm, and you must remain the duration of the presentation for your attendance to be verified. Choose a date convenient for you and your parent/guardian. You may attend a session outside of your Driver Education quarter.

Spring into Action with Mulch Madness!

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the Annandale PTSA's biggest fundraising event of the year - Mulch Madness!

By purchasing mulch, you're not only beautifying your garden or yard but also directly contributing to the All Night Graduation Celebration — a fun, safe, alcohol, and drug-free event chaperoned by parents to honor our graduating seniors. Order now through March 27! Mulch will be available for pick-up at AHS on Saturday, April 6 from 8am-12pm or delivered to your location. Each mulch bag covers 3 cubic feet and weighs about 50 lbs. $6.50 per bag delivered (10 bag minimum and within a five mile radius of AHS). $5.50 per bag self pick-up. In addition, there are big and small volunteer opportunities but they all make a difference with our biggest and most critical fundraiser of the year. Sign up here to volunteer and help make this event a success!

Annandale Staff Members Recognized for FCPS Outstanding Employee Awards Program!

Our success as a school is a direct result of the strong collaboration of our dedicated and passionate staff. We are excited to announce that numerous Annandale staff members have been recognized by both the Annandale Pyramid and Region Leadership for their remarkable contributions. Region winners will now advance to compete for the prestigious EDDY, the official award of the FCPS Honors program. The EDDY is awarded to top employees in categories that include Outstanding Teacher, New Teacher, Principal, New Principal, and Leader.

Shawn DeRose Named Region 6 Outstanding Principal!

 

Shawn DeRose - Region 6 Outstanding Principal: We are proud to announce that Shawn DeRose has been named Region 6 Outstanding Principal. This honor is a reflection of his exceptional leadership and profound dedication to Annandale High School. 

As Principal, Mr. DeRose ensures that Annandale's diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated as our greatest asset. In addition, his leadership inspires excellence and creativity through his unwavering commitment, and focus on our priorities of relationships and support, high quality instruction, and strong collaboration. As a result, students, staff, and our community are dedicated to being a great school for all students through continuous improvement and innovative practices. 

Under Mr. DeRose’s leadership, our students continually outperform pre-pandemic SOL pass rates in every subject and every subgroup. Moreover, our school culture and climate have improved, as evidenced by SEL data growth and double-digit gains in our Employee Engagement Survey results. Congratulations, Mr. DeRose, on this well-deserved honor!

Katie Shaw Named Region 6 Outstanding New Teacher!

 

Katie Shaw - Region 6 Outstanding New Teacher: Annandale High School is excited to announce that Katie Shaw has been named Region 6 Outstanding New Teacher! In just her first year, Ms. Shaw has made a remarkable impact on our school community, particularly for our students in the CAT B program. 

Ms. Shaw's dedication to her students is evident in everything she does. She meticulously prepares her classroom and plans engaging, differentiated lessons to cater to her students' unique needs. Beyond strong instruction, Ms. Shaw fosters a supportive and positive environment. She models "Warm Demanders," holding high expectations while providing the necessary support for students to succeed. Her reflective approach allows her to continuously adapt her practice, ensuring each student is challenged and empowered to reach their full potential. 

However, Ms. Shaw doesn't stop at her own classroom. She actively collaborates with colleagues, shaping the school's PACE curriculum to build important skills for all learners. Her impact extends beyond Annandale as well. She has secured grants to enrich her classroom and actively seeks opportunities to share her expertise, co-authoring a published article and participating in professional development initiatives. Ms. Shaw truly embodies the spirit of a leader, inspiring both students and colleagues. Congratulations, Ms. Shaw on this truly impressive achievement!

Erik Healey, Director of Student Services, Named Annandale Pyramid Outstanding Leader!

 

Erik Healey - Annandale Pyramid Leader: Congratulations to Dr. Erik Healey for being named Annandale Pyramid Outstanding Leader! This award recognizes school leaders who make exceptional contributions to the entire division. Over the past several years, Dr. Healey has demonstrated a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion that has made an impact at Annandale High School and beyond.

In his work leading our Student Services department, Dr. Healey has transformed the way Annandale approaches student support. He has built data-driven systems for intervention, ensuring that every student receives the targeted support they need to succeed. These systems not only support the academic achievement of all students, but also their social-emotional growth, and have become a model for other schools in FCPS. 

Congratulations, Dr. Healey! Your remarkable contributions have truly made a significant difference in the lives of our students and staff!

The Atoms head into spring break with several programs showing growth and improvements and several looking prepared to breakout and make runs at district championships! GO ATOMS!!! Atoms Weekly Recap

Here is a quick recap of first week of spring sports

Girls Soccer was back in action with two games before the break. The Atoms welcomed the Bulldogs of Westfield Tuesday evening and held a 2-1 lead late into the second half before the Bulldogs were able to squeeze a goal in with five to play. The game ended in a 2-2 after OT. The Atoms didn't have long to wait before their game as they hosted Woodbridge Wednesday. The Atoms played well but couldn't hold the Vikings from scoring twice to take the game 2-0. The Atoms are off until their district opener at Falls Church, April 4.

Boys Soccer didn't get in the win column but they didn't end up of loss column either this week. The Atoms traveled to Westfield and battled the Bulldogs to a 2-2 tie in a great competitive game. Thursday night saw the Atoms host Osbourn Park and hold a 2-1 advantage until the final minutes of the game when a PK was the dagger to make it 2-2. OT was a competitive and saw the game end just the way it started, tied. The Atoms return to the field April 4 when they host Falls Church.

Softball was in action twice this week vs district foes Hayfield and Justice. The Atoms played a tough Hayfield team, holding an 11-10 lead into the 5th inning and tie game at 11 into the 7th. The Hawks were able to scratch a couple runs across in the 7th to win an exciting game 15-12. The Atoms returned to the field at Justice Thursday night and ran away from the Wolves winning convincingly 18-2! The Atoms looks to make it two in a row when they return after the break vs Oakton on April 3.

Baseball had two more district games before the break. Game 1 of the week saw the Atoms take an early lead vs Hayfield before the Hawks' bats got hot and flew away from the Atoms in the later innings. Game 2 required the Atoms to travel to the Den of Justice. It was an exciting back and forth game that saw the Atoms prevail 7-6 over the Wolves! The Atoms have a few games over the break (all at Annandale) and return to district play April 2 vs Lewis. 

Boys Tennis had a busy week with three matches vs district opponents. The Atoms started the week with a dominating 8-1 win over Justice! The Atoms were solid in every match but unfortunately could keep the momentum as they fell to Lewis the next day 3-6. The Atoms finished the week off with state contenders TJ but the growth and development of the team is evident as they head into spring break. Next up Edison April 3. 

Girls Tennis went into spring break with three matches. The young Atoms continue to played hard each match but their youth is still evident at this point in the season. They fell in all three matches to Justice, Lewis, and TJ but their determination to get better continues to shine through and look to make big strides after the break. They return to the court April 3 vs Edison.

Boys Lacrosse hit the field for three games before the break. The Atoms hosted Wakefield Monday and played well but fell short to the Warriors to open the week. The Atoms traveled to Mt. Vernon for their first district game and came away the win to start the season off 1-0. The Atoms ended the week vs South Lakes. The Seahawks ran away from the Atoms but the improvements that started last year continue to show! The Atoms look to continue that growth when they return after the break vs district rival Falls Church.

Girls Lacrosse had one game this week versus a talented South Lakes team. The Seahawks flexed early and ran away from the Atoms. The Atoms played hard and look to build off the growth they've shown this year when they return to the field for their district opener vs Falls Church.

Outdoor Track & Field had their second meet of the season at Justice. The Atoms continue to shine on the track as several more athletes qualified for the district and region meets with personal best times. The Atoms get back at if after the break with their third meet at Lewis.

Annandale High School has a rich history of success, community support, and strong alumni base that stretches back to its creation in 1954. There is a legacy that surrounds Annandale that many are proud to be a part of as it feels like home to  those who have walked our halls. Annandale HS Summer Camps

Looking for fun activities for your child this summer? Annandale High School is offering a variety of summer camps this year for current elementary and middle school students led by our own Annandale coaches. Help spread the word to friends, family and neighbors! More information on signups upcoming!

Registration for all camps can be found HERE. See descriptions of the various camps below. More information can be found at AnnandaleAtoms.net. 

Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp, and they should bring a snack and a water bottle each day. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made out to “Annandale Athletic Boosters”.

Payment is due on the first day of camp or can be made online by clicking on the camps link below (When paying online, there is an additional small fee for processing).

Camp Information

Multi-Sport Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 20-23 ($120): Campers will have fun playing a variety of sports including basketball, kickball, volleyball, soccer, and touch football. They will participate in fun contests and win prizes! Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 8:30am-3:00pm.

Olympics Camp - Rising 2nd-9th Graders - June 24-27 ($120): This exciting camp features team activities including soccer, volleyball, basketball, touch football, and relay races. Campers will also get a chance to compete and earn medals! Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 8:30am-3:00pm.

Basketball - Rising 4th-9th Graders - July 8-12 ($200): Campers will spend each day focused on developing their basketball skills. They will also receive a report card on their basketball abilities, a t-shirt, and a chance to win trophies. Campers can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at camp. Hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Annandale Special Olympics Track Meet

Annandale’s Inclusion Track Meet will be held on Saturday, April 13 from 9:00am to 2:00pm on the track field.

Come out to support your Annandale Special Olympics team and enjoy a fun filled day of Inclusion. Vendors will be on sight with music, face painting, yard games, and food. Fun for the whole family!

Autism Acceptance Night

Come join us this Thursday, April 25 at 6:30pm as we cheer on our Varsity Baseball Team and celebrate Autism Acceptance. Our special guest stars Kevin Maldonado-Lopez and Andy Ocloo will be throwing out the first pitch for the game. Our classes have been working hard and we will be selling various items that they have created. We will also have baked goods and Inclusion Revolution Autism Acceptance t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to our Special Education Department. We will be selling Autism Acceptance gear at the game!

Annandale H.S. Physical Night

Students who would like to participate in sports or band next year will need a valid VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2024. On May 21 at 5:30pm we will be hosting Sport and Activity Health Screenings. This physical will be good for all of next school year. The cost at Annandale is $50 pre-registration and $60 dollars walk-in. This is a donation to the Athletic Training Program so that we can continue to provide state of the art care for our athletes and band members. Click HERE to sign up or scan the QR code below. Rising 9th Grade Activites/Athletics/Clubs Night

The Activities Office will be hosting an information night for rising 9th grade Activities/Athletics/Clubs Night on May 21 at 6:30pm in the main gym. During this session, we will share information about the sports/seasons that we offer, how to sign up for a sport, and when try-outs for each sport begin. A coach, director, or student representative for each program will be available to answer any questions.

Atoms Athletics Booster Scholarship

Each year the Atoms Athletics Booster Club gives out two $1000 scholarships to our Atoms athletes. The scholarships goes to two senior student-athletes who plan to pursue further education after high school. The student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point average and have played an Atoms Athletic Department recognized sport during their senior year. To complete the application, Click Here.

Learners Permit Testing at Annandale

Is your student eligible for a learner's permit (15 years and 6 months old)? Would you like to avoid the long lines at the DMV? Then we have the fix for you. Annandale 10th grade Driver's Education teachers will be offering learner's permit testing after school at 3:15pm for those students eligible for their permit. Students must register through ACE Website. Partners for Safe Teen Driving

Included in Grade 10 Health & PE is one quarter, or 30-36 hours, of in-classroom driver education. To get your driver’s license in Virginia, you must successfully complete, or pass, the classroom portion of driver education. You must also attend a 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety program, Partners for Safe Teen Driving, or PSTD, with a parent/guardian. Annandale High School is hosting five (5) PSTD presentations this school year, one each quarter and two during the fourth quarter. They are free to students enrolled in Health & PE 10 at Annandale HS and begin at 6:30pm in the auditorium. You must attend with a parent/guardian, arrive ON TIME as the door is locked at 6:30pm, and you must remain the duration of the presentation for your attendance to be verified. Choose a date convenient for you and your parent/guardian. You may attend a session outside of your Driver Education quarter.

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

At Annandale, we support student academic success not only in the classroom, but through our PRIDE Time Intervention and our After School Academic Program (ASAP). Last week, we once again reviewed student data and adjusted assignments for PRIDE Time and ASAP. These adjustments ensure that our interventions remain responsive and effective, fostering an environment where every student can thrive.

Looking forward, now that academic advising is nearly done, we are hard at work on our master schedule for next year with input from administrators, instructional coaches, and department chairs. In addition, we have started hiring for the upcoming school year and have found some incredible candidates who will enrich our work as a school in the years to come. 

Our Instructional Council and CT Leads recently came together to examine our instructional focus and the progress we have made as a building towards our priorities of relationships and support, high quality instruction, and strong collaboration. It is always exciting to reflect on how we have grown and discuss how we can continue to get better as a school. More importantly, this work will shape our instructional focus for next year, which we will share with students, staff and the community in the coming months.

As Spring Break approaches, we will continue our tradition of allowing everyone to relax and refresh over the spring holiday. Teachers should not be assigning work over spring break with the exception of long term assignments that happen to span over the break. Furthermore, to ease the transition back into academic routines, there will be no assessments the first two days back after break.

Finally, tomorrow, Annandale parents/guardians will receive an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school. Please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. I value your feedback!

Mulch Madness Is Here!

Mulch Madness is the PTSA's biggest and most critical fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from the mulch sale go directly to support the PTSA's All Night Graduation Celebration and Senior Scholarships. All Night Graduation Celebration provides a fun, safe, alcohol and drug-free parent-chaperoned celebration for our seniors. Order now through March 27! Mulch will be available for pick-up at AHS on Saturday, April 6 from 8am-12pm or delivered to your location. Each mulch bag covers 3 cubic feet and weighs about 50 lbs. $6.50 per bag delivered (10 bag minimum and within a five mile radius of AHS). $5.50 per bag self pick-up. March 18 - Lockdown Drill: On Monday, we will conduct our second required lockdown drill of the school year. Your student may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your student about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Here are some helpful tips for families to use to support their students before and after school lockdown drills. 

 

March 21-22 - Performing Arts Spring Trip: Annandale’s Performing Arts students will be taking a trip to New York City! During the trip, students will be touring Lincoln Center, seeing a Broadway show, attending a workshop, and seeing a performance at Juilliard. The afternoon before leaving for the trip, students will enjoy a clinic with members of The United States Army Band and members of the National Symphony Orchestra on “Setting the Tone.”

 

March 25-29 - Spring Break: Schools and school offices will be closed. See the complete 2023-24 school year calendar.

 

April 9 - PTSA Meeting, 7pm: Our next PTSA meeting will be on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:00pm in the library. Spanish translation will be available. If you can't attend in person, consider joining us virtually on Zoom. The link will be active 15 minutes prior to the start of the meeting. April 17 - Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PTSD), 6:30pm: Annandale High School will be hosting Partners for Safe Teen Driving on April 17 at 6:30pm. The state of Virginia requires students and their parents to attend one session of Partners for Safe Teen Driving in order to receive their Pink Card (DEC-8). If the parent and student are not in the auditorium at 6:30pm then they will be asked to attend another session. If you have any questions, please email Lizzie McManus.

Awesome Atoms

Cafecito Con El Director Monthly Meeting: Annandale Family Liaisons host a monthly event, "Cafecito con el Director" that invites our Spanish-speaking families to meet with school staff members and learn about important events and programs while building a network of community support. This month, they reviewed ways to support students in finishing the third quarter strong and preparing for SOLs.

 

WIDA Testing Complete! WIDA testing has officially ended. We administered over 2,800 tests! Over the course of the testing window, we were able to test 98.5% of our ELs. Huge shoutout to our ESOL department for their support proctoring WIDA and to our Admin, Coaches, Counselors, Librarians, and other staff who helped in getting our students to testing.

 

Future Atoms Visit AHS: Students from Frost, Glasgow, and Lake Braddock Middle Schools visited Annandale High Schools to tour our campus and learn about student life from our Atoms Ambassadors. Staff and students had a great time getting to know our future Atoms and welcoming them to Atom Nation!

 

AVID Students Visit University of Mary Washington: More than 40 AVID Students visited the University of Mary Washington this week for a campus tour and lunch. Students were also able to meet with AHS alumni attending UMW and learn about the college experience.

 

Students Visit the United Nations: The Center for International Education and Exchange (CIEE) Global Ambassadors traveled to NYC to leverage their study-abroad experience and explore post-secondary options in the field of international studies. Students visited the United Nations, toured New York University, and connected with alumni at CIEE partner school, Stuyvesant High School. It's not a trip to NYC without a visit to Times Square and walking the Brooklyn Bridge! Keep an eye on these five changemakers as they seek to make the world a better place for all.

Music In Our Schools Month

March is Music in our Schools Month. We recognize the importance of music education for all students and the important role of music education in schools. To celebrate, we wanted to share some updates from our Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and Guitar programs.

 

Annandale Music Students Audition for All-Virginia Band & Orchestra: On February 24, several hundred select band and orchestra students from throughout Virginia traveled to JMU to audition for the All-Virginia band and orchestra. Our very own Tyler Perez competed against 32 other euphonium players to win a coveted spot in the All-Virginia concert band, ranking #7 in the state. Tyler will participate in rehearsals and performances in Richmond, April 18-20. Congratulations Tyler!

 

Annandale Choirs Earn High Marks at State Choral Assessments: Annandale High School proudly announces exceptional results from the State Choral Assessments at Annandale UMC. Our talented choral groups have excelled, with ten Superior and two Excellent ratings in concert performances, showcasing their outstanding musical abilities. In the challenging sight-reading component, our ensembles continued to impress, achieving three Superior and one Excellent ratings. These achievements highlight the dedication, hard work, and musical excellence of our students and educators. We commend their efforts and celebrate the vibrant musical spirit within our school community.

 

AHS Students Form Interdisciplinary Jazz Ensemble: The Annandale Bands have much to celebrate this Spring. As you may have seen in the A-Blast, several band students have come together on their own to form an interdisciplinary Jazz ensemble led by senior trombonist Anthony Rodriguez. Members of the band, orchestra, chorus, and IB Music class rehearse every Tuesday and Thursday after school as they prepare for their debut performance on May 14 as part of the Band spring concert. Anthony has written custom warm-ups and arrangements for the Jazz ensemble, and leads rehearsals like a veteran teacher!

 

Annandale Band Students Earn High Ratings in District Assessment: Since our return from winter break the Annandale Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble have been diligently rehearsing and preparing for District Ten concert assessment. This process is a summative experience of preparing the most challenging concert repertoire against state standards that are evaluated by three professional judges. Both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble earned “Excellent” ratings in all categories of performance. The Symphonic Band, composed mostly of freshman and sophomores (including 6 beginners), even earned a “Superior” rating in sight-reading. After a successful assessment experience, the bands now turn their attention to preparing the Spring concert, marching band mini-camp, and playing for graduation.

 

Orchestra Assessment Success! Congratulations to Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras on their outstanding professionalism and performances at Assessment! Both ensembles walked away with Superior ratings from all judges with A’s (highest marks) in every category. We are so proud of their hard work and the growth all of the groups have shown over this concert cycle! Thank you to the staff for their support and sharing their spaces with us to make this event happen for District X.

 

Guitar Concert a Success! The AHS Guitar Ensemble celebrated the first guitar concert at AHS in a decade. The guitar students are now busy preparing for a spring concert and Assessment this May. Six students from the AHS Guitar program were selected to perform with the VGDA North Region Honors Guitar Ensemble. Congratulations to Parikshit, Gabriel Olivares-Tapia, Keegan Cano, Emily Camacho, Sibyl Dauer and Marina Bonilla-Gomez.

Important Information

Assignments Over Spring Break: We will continue our tradition of allowing everyone to relax and refresh over spring break. Teachers should not be assigning work over spring break with the exception of long term assignments that happen to span over the break. In addition, there will be no assessments the first two days back after break.

 

Principal Evaluation Survey Coming Soon! On Monday, March 18, Annandale HS parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

​​​​​​​The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. Please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

 

Safety Drills in March: Keeping students and staff safe is a priority at Annandale High School. Last week, we conducted our annual tornado drill. This week we will conduct our second required lockdown drill of the school year and our monthly fire drill. Your student may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your student about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Here are some helpful tips for families to use to support their students before and after school lockdown drills. Working together, we create a safe, secure environment for students to learn and grow in our schools.

 

Now Open! Family Engagement Survey: FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open now through Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Parents will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available in our front office. March 18 - Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs, 6:30pm: A community conversation on the opioid crisis in Northern Virginia will be held Monday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. (Please enter through Door #14). Attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services within FCPS and Fairfax County. This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed will be suitable for students in grade 6 and higher. Language interpretation will be available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

 

March 20 - FCPS Virtual Military Night: FCPS School Counseling Services is hosting a Virtual Military Night on Wednesday, March 20, 6-8 p.m. This event is designed for high school students and their families who are interested in learning more about the military pathways and opportunities. Enlistment, service academies, and ROTC pathways will be represented.

March 22 - Nominations for the First Class Award for Inclusion Due: The Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) is seeking nominations for the First Class Awards. The awards are presented annually to educators, administrators, and students who support, design, and/or implement inclusion activities that result in positive outcomes for students. The ACSD will recognize award winners at the Family Summit on Saturday, April 20. Nominate an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to inclusive practices in Fairfax County Public Schools by Friday, March 22. Email [email protected] with questions.

 

March 22 - Applications for Student Representative to the School Board Due: Each year, FCPS students have the opportunity to apply for the position of the student representative to the School Board. The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity, representing the interests of the students of Fairfax County Public Schools. Students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply, and they do not need to be current members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC). Institute for the Arts: Students in all FCPS secondary schools can enroll in the Institute for the Arts. IFTA is a two- or three-week summer Arts enrichment program for students in rising grades 7-12. Students create their own schedules in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance from nearly 60 courses offered. Transportation is provided from around the county. Tuition assistance is available for students who qualify. Sign up for a writing conference with the AWC: The trained peer tutors of the Atoms Writing Center will continue to provide support for students with writing in any class. Need Help in Your Class? Stay With Your Teacher After School! Annandale High School offers late bus transportation three (3) days per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. All teachers stay after school at least one day a week to provide academic support for students. Please refer to this list to see which day your student’s teacher is available after school.

 

Annandale Tutoring Center Open Mondays: Students can now get tutoring from AVID and honor society members, every Monday in Room 287 from 3:00-4:00pm. Tutors will be available to help in math, science and social studies. Contact Ms. Michelle Lukacs, AVID and History teacher, with questions.

College Admission & Financial Aid

March 19 - NOVA Virtual Sessions for Seniors and Their Families: Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is offering virtual information and application sessions. Information sessions will provide an overview of NOVA and the opportunities, services, and resources designed to connect high school seniors to the NOVA Nighthawk Community. An information session will be held Tuesday, March 19, at 4:30pm and a virtual application workshop will be held Tuesday, April 30, at 7:00pm. FAFSA Updates for Seniors and Families: There have been several technological challenges with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) since its launch on December 31, 2023. The latest news is that colleges will not get FAFSA summaries from the U.S. Department of Education until mid-March at the earliest. As a result, colleges won’t be able to give students financial aid award letters based on their FAFSA information until late April to May, at best. Students who applied to a college that uses the CSS Profile may receive financial aid information sooner.

Different media outlets are reporting a growing list of colleges that will push back deadlines for students to accept offers of admission into May and even June. The American Council on Education has a database of colleges and universities that have extended their deadline to commit to enroll. We recommend that all information obtained by a secondary source be confirmed directly with the college or university. If you need assistance, please contact Mr. Yeagley in our College and Career Center or your student’s counselor.

 

College & Career Planning Google Site: Check out the College & Career Planning Google site, which provides up-to-date information on the college application process; college representative visits; financial aid and FAFSA/VASA workshops; military options; information on apprenticeships; as well as resources for finding a job. The website also provides contact information for our School Counselors, as well as our College and Career Specialist.

 

Thursday College Application Workshops: Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm in Room 90 (near the Cafeteria), Counselors and AVID students will be assisting students with various topics: Making a College List; Transcript Request Form; Common App; Recommendation Requests. Students are welcome to drop in with questions about any aspect of the process.

Volunteers Wanted - AHS Pantry: The AHS Pantry needs your help! Each month, the Annandale Pantry distributes bags of food to Annandale families in need. Distribution dates are primarily on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 3:30-5:00pm. Please consider volunteering to assist in a distribution. Volunteers can sign up here.

 

AHS Pantry Distribution Every Second Wednesday: We offer bi-monthly family distributions as well as twice weekly student distributions and emergency needs and gift cards for emergency situations that are tracked and distributed with our AHS clinical staff. We have partnerships with Food for Others and Fairfax Diaper as well as other Community businesses, neighborhoods, girl scout troops and churches.
