The FCPS Excellence event was held at Fairfax High School on October 16 and was attended by Superintendent Dr. Scott Brabrand, members of the FCPS Leadership Team, members of the FCPS School Board, Annandale High School Principal Tim Thomas and other distinguished guests. The following excerpt from his nomination packet was read while she received her certificate from Dr. Brabrand, Assistant Superintendent, Region 2 Fabio Zuluaga, and members of the School Board.

Ms. Mathis is a natural innovator who approaches every English class at Annandale High School with an inspiring attention to creativity and an eye toward problem-solving.  Ms. Mathis works with teachers cross-departmentally to connect her students to the outside world; they participate in virtual, student-led discussions with Annandale graduates across the country and “travel” across the world to explore cultural backgrounds and hear inspiring stories of success.  Not surprisingly, one of Ms. Mathis's team teachers shared that “teaming with Ms. Mathis is so exciting - we have to buckle our seat belts because each class with her is a wild ride!”  Perhaps Ms. Mathis's most impactful contribution, though, is how she supports, cheers, and shares with colleagues and students alike, allowing all to be their own innovators. Congratulations, Ms. Mathis!

Thank you, Ms. Mathis, for all of your all that you do inspire, lead, and educate the students of Annandale High School!
