Annandale Community Insider - November 21

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

On this Thanksgiving week, one of the things I am most thankful for is our incredible Annandale staff. I have shared over and over that this year may be the most challenging and most important year we have faced as educators. Our priorities of relationships and support, high quality instruction, and strong collaboration are absolutely the right ones as we continue to repair from the impacts of the past year and a half; at the same time, living these priorities each and every day is not easy. The incredible care and dedication that our staff members demonstrate every single day for our students and our entire Annandale community is truly inspiring, and I am proud to work alongside them.

During this season of gratitude, we wanted to give as much opportunity as possible for you to recognize an Annandale staff member who has made a positive impact on your student, your family, or your community. So, we have extended the deadline for nominating a staff member for an FCPS Outstanding Award to Tuesday, November 23. Please take a moment to complete this quick nomination form.

I hope you are able to spend the holiday weekend resting and rejuvenating in your favorite ways this Thanksgiving holiday. In support of this, teachers will not assign homework, projects, or papers over breaks, and refrain from assigning any major assessments or project due dates on the first two days back. If you have questions regarding specific assignments in a particular class, we always encourage students and families to reach out directly to their teachers for clarification and information.

Everything we do at Annandale is because you give us the tremendous privilege of educating your students. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of their growth and learning.

As always, reach out with questions or concerns. Go Atoms!

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Donate Gift Cards for AHS Staff

At events throughout the year, we recognize staff who are going above and beyond with gift cards donated by a community member at the beginning of the year. It has been a huge hit and I am requesting your help again since we are not permitted to use any kind of FCPS funds, local or otherwise, for this purpose. It is amazing how much a $5 or $10 gift card is appreciated. If you are so inclined, please feel free to drop them off at the main office or place them in the mail. Attention: Shawn DeRose. It can be for any business you want to support, in any amount. Nothing is too small.

Awesome Atoms!

Annandale Theater Company's Presentation of Puffs a Success! In their first live performance in over two years, The Annandale Theater Company put on four put on four fantastic live performances of Puffs this past weekend. Bravo to the cast and crew for an amazing performance! There were even some surprise guest performances from staff members Carmen Lucas, Cragin Eres, Bill Maglisceau, and Phillip Harris. The cast had the audience in stitches with hilarious one-liners and smart quips. It was great to see that talents of Annandale students in full display on the stage and behind the scenes.

Annandale Students Featured in the Washington Post: The efforts of students at Annandale to support newcomers with a buddy system to help them adjust and navigate the school was featured in this article in the Washington Post. AHS student Sosan Barakzai was quoted, “There is so much to get to know. Anything they have questions with, we want to make them feel comfortable” She and others who settled in the United States before the new arrivals say they would have liked to hear from students like themselves about how to follow class schedules and get around the school, how to ride the bus, which foods are halal, how course credits work, what is needed for graduation.

CAT B Orchestra Build Pre-Instruments: Students in our CAT B Orchestra had the opportunity to build their pre-instruments and learn about the parts of the instrument this week. This hand-on experience helped students to take ownership of their learning, and their instrument, as well as taught students how to take care of their equipment!

Welcome Charles Campbell! A graduate of Fairfax County Public Schools, Charles has joined our Security Team as a a monitor. Charles previously worked as a groundsman, package handler, and truck driver. He has coached basketball at several levels, including coaching the NOVA Heat. Three years ago, he began coaching at West Potomac High School where he discovered a passion for being a positive role model for young students. Now, Charles has decided to transition to working with students full time.

Opportunities

Register Your Student for Optional COVID-19 Screening Testing: Parents and guardians can use the secure online portal to register their student(s). If you do not want your child to participate, no action is required. You will have the option to update your child’s vaccination status and/or withdraw consent for testing anytime. Student-athletes do not need to pre-register with the LTS online portal for screening testing, they will use a separate portal provided by our Director of Student Activities.

There will be no student COVID-19 screening testing the week of November 22 due to the Thanksgiving break. For more information on student COVID-19 testing, visit the FCPS website

Annandale Community Insider - November 14

AHS News1 week 6 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

I hope you were able to enjoy this beautiful fall weekend. On Saturday, I, along with several staff members, participated in the Monopoly Tournament sponsored by the PTSA. We had over 40 people register for this year’s event. Congratulations to Toby Dienstfrey, Math teacher here at Annandale, who was crowned champion! Correne Bellem, 11th grade student at AHS, finished second, Bill Maglisceau, AHS English teacher, was third and Chris Valentine, brother of AP Brian Valentine earned fourth place. My experience was record breaking as I lasted about 20 minutes into the 1st round before being knocked out.

The winter sports season is off to a strong start. Parents will have the opportunity to learn more about supporting their student athlete tomorrow at Meet the Coaches Night at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. On Tuesday, we will celebrate our athletes who participated in fall sports at 6:00pm in the cafeteria. Immediately following the banquet at 7:30pm, we will host our November PTSA meeting in the library. Participants can also join virtually using this link.

As we approach Thanksgiving break, we will continue our tradition of allowing everyone to relax and refresh over holiday breaks. Teachers will not assign homework, projects, or papers over breaks, and refrain from assigning any major assessments or project due dates on the first two days back. We want our staff and students to enjoy a mental wellness break and have time to safely connect with family and friends this Thanksgiving holiday. To that end, you may find this Playtime, Downtime, and Family Time for teenagers a valuable resource.

Finally, at events throughout the year, we recognize staff who are going above and beyond with gift cards donated by a community member at the beginning of the year. It has been a huge hit and I am requesting your help again since we are not permitted to use any kind of FCPS funds, local or otherwise, for this purpose. It is amazing how much a $5 or $10 gift card is appreciated. If you are so inclined, please feel free to drop them off at the main office or place them in the mail to my attention. It can be for any business you want to support, in any amount. Nothing is too small.

As always, reach out with questions or concerns. Go Atoms!

Over 60 New EL Students Enrolled Since August: Since August, AHS has enrolled over 60 new English Language Learner (EL) students. With this increase in our EL population, our ESOL department has gone above and beyond not only by welcoming our new students, but also by being flexible with their own teaching assignments. Many of our teachers have taken on additional courses to support our department as we grow. We have hired additional staffing and our teachers have done an amazing job of supporting them as well. Thank you to the Annandale ESOL department for their hard work, dedication, and flexibility this year!

Happy School Psychologist Week! This past week we celebrated our School Psychologist, Laurie Ottehenning. In her free time, Laurie enjoys playing and watching soccer, hiking, and spending time with her husband, 6 month old daughter, and dog.

A huge thank you to the 20 teachers who have volunteered to provide this intervention after school, as well as the staff members who support them.

Updated Vaccination Policy

Annandale Athletic Families,

COVID-19 screening testing for students, including student-athletes, will now begin November 15. The adjustment will allow FCPS and its contractors time to ensure all components, including the portals are up and running and staff are fully trained.

We also know many student-athletes are currently in the middle of their two-dose cycle and additional time for testing to begin will allow those students to complete their vaccinations. Students are eligible to try out for their sport if they have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

In order to streamline the process for families who have to register multiple students, we’ve moved the start date for all student screening testing. We will share information about how to pre-register and provide consent for COVID-19 testing through a secure online portal shortly.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends school-based testing to limit the spread of COVID-19 and to keep schools open safely. FCPS will begin screening testing for staff on November 1 as originally scheduled.

For more information, visit our COVID-19 Screening Testing webpage.

Annandale Community Insider - November 7

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful fall weekend. I spent the weekend coaching my daughter Regan’s final softball game of the season, cheering on Ohio State vs. Nebraska and watching both my daughters play volleyball.

This past Monday, staff came together virtually to reflect on all of the ways we have grown this year, both individually and in our teams. In addition, we used our time together to reground in our priorities: relationships & support, high quality instruction, and strong collaboration.

We heard from some students about how learning targets are helpful to them. Then, a few teachers shared ways their teams have gotten better at implementing high quality learning targets and academic tasks. We acknowledged that this year is challenging, and how through challenges we grow. In the wise words of Ted Lasso, "Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, If you're comfortable while you're doing it, you're probably doing it wrong."

With that in mind, we believe that our staff is truly unparalleled, and that the work they do for our students deserves celebration and recognition beyond our building. Each year, FCPS looks to honor several staff members for outstanding excellence in their roles, including Outstanding Teacher, New Teacher, Leader, Professional Employee, Operational Employee and Principal. We hope you will help us to celebrate the amazing work done every day at Annandale High School by highlighting some of our amazing staff members!

To nominate an Annandale HS staff member, please complete the AHS Outstanding Employee Nomination Form. If you are interested in learning more about the overall FCPS awards process, you may visit the FCPS Outstanding Employee Awards Website. Nominations are due by Friday, November 19. Contact Bryan Molle at BCMolle@fcps.edu with any questions.

As always, reach out with questions or concerns. Go Atoms!

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Attendance Matters! Now that students are familiar with transitioning between classes, 2nd chance breakfast, W4, PRIDE TIme, and lunch, we will be putting greater emphasis on student tardies. Moving forward, administrators and MTSS coordinators will be speaking with students who are frequently late to class and will be assigning them an after school detention. However, we need the assistance of parents as well. According to our data, students are most frequently tardy to 1st and 2nd period. Parents are strongly encouraged to drop off your student beginning at 7:45am and no later than 8:00am. School starts at 8:10am.

Scoliosis Fact Sheet: Fairfax County requires that each school notifies parents and guardians with educational information on scoliosis. Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. It occurs in otherwise healthy children and can be a serious health problem if it becomes severe. For more information on scoliosis, please refer to the Scoliosis Fact Sheet. For more resources regarding Student Safety and Wellness, please visit the School Health Services website.

Student Food Delivery: Students are not permitted to order food deliveries during the school day. Breakfast, Second Chance Breakfast, and Lunch are all available free of charge for all students. Food orders delivered to the mail office will be held until the end of the day. If you have questions, please reach out to your student’s administrator.

Scheduled Student Check-out: When checking your student out, the fastest and easiest way to ensure your student is released in a timely manner is to send a note to the Attendance Office with your student. Your student will be issued a check-out pass for the scheduled time. For your convenience, you may also call and leave a message with the Attendance Office at 703-642-4151. Please provide your student's name and the time you want your student dismissed. It is preferable for this to be completed in the morning in order to create the checkout information and pass for the student.

Unscheduled Student Check-out: The deadline for picking up a student for unscheduled checkout is 2:30pm. Parents and/or emergency contact(s) should report to the Attendance Office. Please allow at least 15 minutes and bring a photo ID to complete the checkout process.

Annandale Community Insider - October 31

AHS News3 weeks 6 days ago

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

Happy Halloween! What a fun day at AHS on Friday! We saw so many smiles on students’ faces as they admired each others’ and staff costumes, which just goes to show that we are never too old to be silly and have fun together. Check out some of the Halloween fun on our Twitter page.

It’s hard to believe, but Wednesday marks the start of Quarter 2. Our staff has had the opportunity to build relationships and begin to learn the strengths and areas of growth for our students through assessments and daily interactions. We have enjoyed watching our staff and students build relationships in classrooms, hallways, at lunch, and during after-school activities. These relationships were especially evident in the festive atmosphere at school on Friday.

As a reminder, Monday and Tuesday are student holidays while teachers prepare grades. Quarter 1 grades will be available in SIS on Sunday, November 13. Remember, all courses at Annandale use a rolling gradebook. Unlike in the past, when each quarter grade was final, a rolling gradebook means that quarter grades are more like progress reports. Students can continue to improve their final grade throughout the school year. We encourage students to use Monday and Tuesday as an opportunity to catch up on any missing assignments or to consider what assessments they might retake. This is also a great time to reach out to teachers with questions and concerns.

Finally, now that students are familiar with transitioning to and from classes, we will be putting greater emphasis on students arriving to classes on time. Moving forward, administrators and MTSS coordinators will be speaking with students who are frequently late to class and will be assigning them an after school detention. Parents, we need your help! According to our data, students are most frequently tardy to periods 1 & 2. Parents are strongly encouraged to drop their students off beginning at 7:45am, and no later than 8:00am. School starts at 8:10am.

As always, reach out with questions or concerns. Go Atoms!

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Annandale Community Insider - October 24

AHS News1 month ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

It is hard to believe that this Friday marks the end of the first quarter. There will be a two hour early release for students. Additionally, we invite students to dress up for Halloween with their best pun, pop culture reference or ghoulish garb for a fun, festive send-off of the first quarter! Please ensure costumes follow our dress code and do not impact safety and learning.

Students and families are encouraged to check SIS and Schoology to ensure all assignments have been turned in and any assessment retakes have been completed. Once again this year, we are using a rolling gradebook. This means that a student’s final grade is not an average of the grades from each quarter, but an average of all assignments completed throughout the year. Quarter grades provide a snapshot of the student’s progress and are not used to determine final grades. We encourage you to reach out to your student’s teachers if you have questions. Finally, November 1 and 2 are teacher work days, which means there will be no school for students.

After 20 months, we hosted our first Performing Arts concert of the school year this past week, the Annandale Choirs. This Tuesday, we are excited to host the Orchestra Fall Concert. The free concert begins at 7:00pm and will also feature students from Poe Middle School. There will be a pre-concert bake sale and guests are encouraged to dress in costumes.

Finally, as many of you know, we paused our Varsity Football game on Friday night when we were notified of a shooting near the Annandale campus. The safety of students, players and fans is our top priority. Special thanks to both the Annandale and Falls Church communities for their understanding, feedback, and support. When play resumed on Saturday afternoon, Falls Church rallied to take the lead late in the 4th quarter. However, Zach Hurd ran 75 yards for the go-ahead score with under two minutes left and the Atoms won 21-18.

Have a great week, Atom Nation. As always, reach out with questions or concerns.

New Vaccination Policy for Athletes

Annandale Families,

Starting November 8, students who are 16 years or older are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a medical or religious exemption on file in order to participate in Virginia High School League (VHSL) winter and spring sports for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year.

Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination will also be required for participation in any other activity that requires a physical. This includes dance team and step team, as well as out-of-season practices and workouts. Unvaccinated students 12-15 years of age must provide a negative COVID-19 test weekly to participate in team activities.

Annandale is now accepting proof of vaccination or qualified exemptions for students.

Proof of vaccination is provided by showing the student’s vaccination card to Activities Office.  Please drop off a copy of the card as soon as possible.

Medical exemptions must be submitted through a letter from the student’s doctor, on the doctor’s office letterhead, stating the student has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test every week. To provide documentation of a medical exemption: [provide your school’s procedure]

Religious exemptions must be submitted using the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption form and must be notarized. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test every week. To provide documentation of a religious exemption: [provide your school’s procedure]

Proof of vaccination or exemption must be submitted by November 1, 2021.

Weekly testing will be required for unvaccinated students 12-15 and those who qualify for medical or religious exemptions. The test will need to be either a rapid test or a PCR test. Home testing using over-the-counter testing products will not be accepted.

For more information about the vaccination requirement for student-athletes, email jellenberger@fcps.edu or visit the FCPS website.

Tonight's Varsity Football Game v. Falls Church Update

AHS News1 month ago

Annandale Community:

During the 4th quarter of our Varsity Football game tonight vs. Falls Church, we were notified of an active shooter near the Annandale campus.

Out of an abundance of caution, we paused the game with 5:21 left in the 4th quarter. Fans were instructed to proceed directly to their vehicle. Those without transportation were directed to the Main Gym until a ride was secured. Working with the Fairfax County Police Department, we received an all clear at approximately 10:00pm, at which point all remaining students were released.

Update: We are currently working with officials to resume the game tomorrow at 12:00pm. Please check the Annandale Athletics website or Annandale Athletics Twitter account for updates.

The safety of students, players and fans is our top priority. Thank you to both the Falls Church and Annandale communities for their cooperation and support. As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Annandale Community Insider - October 17

AHS News1 month 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

Fall is finally here! I hope you are enjoying the cooler weather and having a good time with friends and family this weekend. My children and I drove 430+ miles back to Ohio to meet up with my sister. We spent Friday and Saturday riding roller coasters and enjoying “Halloweekend” at Cedar Point

This past week, I had the opportunity to visit several classrooms. Students were engaged in high level academic tasks like determining if the American Revolution was avoidable in Social Studies class, building models of houses to practice measurement and scale in Physics, and writing computer code to create original images in Computer Science. It is so rewarding to see our students engaged in learning each and every day.

Though it is hard to believe, we are nearing the end of the first quarter, which is Friday, October 29. We encourage all students and families to check SIS and Schoology regularly to ensure all assignments have been turned in and any assessment retakes have been completed.

As a reminder, October 29 will be a two-hour early release for students, and November 1 and 2 are teacher workdays, which means there will be no school for students.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Annandale Community Insider - October 10

AHS News1 month 2 weeks ago

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

What an amazing Homecoming Week! It was great to see staff and students in spirit wear all week. Our Pep Rallies were lots of fun, even though I will be having a conversation with our Director of Student Activities, John Ellenberger, about knocking me down during our plastic bubble soccer match (see picture above). Finally, our tailgate, football game, and dance were a great way to close out the week. I was so proud of the way our students came together to celebrate. They were able to have a great time while observing all safety guidelines.

Homecoming Week is one of many ways we help our students feel connected to school and to each other, and a lot of work goes into making it successful. A huge thank you to the Activities Office for supporting the events, and to all of the teachers, staff, parents and administrators who participated and supervised.

Tomorrow, October 11 is a School Planning Day. Students are encouraged to use this day to catch up on missing work and dedicate time to relax and unwind.

On Tuesday, October 12, PRIDE Time begins. To support our students’ diverse academic needs, students were assigned to either an Intervention PRIDE Time or a Study Hall PRIDE Time. Students will received an email on Monday from our Director of Student Services, Erik Healy, with their PRIDE Time assignment. They will also be able to view it in StudentVue as their period 11 class. Please ask your student about their PRIDE Time assignment and how they are using this time to their advantage.

Wednesday, October 13, is PSAT/SAT Day and a two hour early release. Students in grade 9 or Seniors who did not sign up to take the SAT will have an asynchronous day. They should use this time to work on any outstanding assignments. Students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 should report to school by 8:10am to take the PSAT or SAT Test. See detailed information below.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Pride Time Begins - October 12: On Tuesday, PRIDE Time begins. To support our students’ diverse academic needs, students were assigned to either an Intervention PRIDE Time or a Study Hall PRIDE Time. Vision and Hearing Screening - October 19, 20, 26, 27: Vision and hearing screening will be held on October 19, 20, 26, 27. Additional dates may be added to accommodate students who were virtual and could not be screened during the previous school year. If your child wears glasses, please be sure they have them at school on screening days. The purpose of screening is to identify students who need further evaluation because they have difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones.

Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further testing is needed. Vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning. Prompt follow-up is recommended if you receive a referral letter suggesting further testing. If you have any questions regarding hearing and vision screening, please contact the school health room at 703-642-4110.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener - October 20: On October 20, Annandale will administer our first Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during our W4 lesson. Annandale’s Student Support Team will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for our students related to SEL skills. SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. Learn more about the screener and review the questions here.

Adjusted Schedules for Wednesday, October 13

Annandale High School is hosting a PSAT and SAT School Day on Wednesday, October 13. Students in grades 10-12 will be participating in these exams, and all students will see a change to their schedules on October 13, as follows:

  • Annandale High School will have a 2-hour early release.
  • Academy classes and shuttles are cancelled.

Two Hour Early Release - CAT B Students: Students with disabilities taught on an adapted curriculum (Category B) who are not participating in PSAT or SAT exams receive normal in-person instruction for the shortened school day.

Asynchronous Day for 9th Grade Students: During the first several weeks of school, we have been working to provide information and instruction to our freshmen students around the skills they will need to be successful in their transition to high school, as well as the supports that are available to assist them in their transition. One of these supports is a “catch-up” day on October 13. Students in Grade 9 should use this time to work on any outstanding assignments.

PSAT School Day (Grade 10 and 11): Annandale High School will host both the PSAT/NMSQT for all students in grades 10 and 11. Students are automatically registered and no further action by families is needed. The test is offered at no cost to families. All FCPS students have access to Khan Academy’s free online test preparation, whether they are taking the PSAT for the first time or preparing for eleventh grade National Merit Scholarship Qualification. The Khan Academy online curriculum is customized for students based on any previous PSAT or SAT scores. In addition, the website offers general test preparation tips for students. Students will receive their testing locations in early October.

SAT School Day (Grade 12):  Annandale High School 12th graders will have the opportunity to take the SAT School Day. FCPS will cover the cost for any twelfth grade student to take this test. General information about the SAT School Day test format is available on the College Board webpage. We will share exam day schedules and additional details in the coming weeks. If you have questions about the SAT School Day administration at Annandale High School, please contact Mike Ward smward@fcps.edu

Any Grade 12 students who have chosen not to take the SAT exam have options for prearranged college visits or civic engagement, independent college and career preparation, or other activities, as directed by school staff.

Annandale Community Insider - October 3

AHS News1 month 3 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

Our Back to School Night (BTSN) event, held in our stadium this past Thursday evening, was a huge success. Knowing that so many of our students have felt disconnected the past year and a half, our staff understands and prioritizes the importance of connecting with our students, families and community. Our BTSN event was an incredible opportunity for us to continue building relationships, and the weather was beautiful! Many staff shared how rejuvenating it felt to come together that evening and have that time to check in with families. We heard lots of positive feedback from many of our community members, as well. Thanks to all of you who were able to join us.

If you were not able to attend, you can watch the BTSN videos that teachers created explaining what your student is learning in their class and how you as a family can best support them. As always, please reach out to your student’s teachers with any specific questions or concerns.

On Friday night, I attended the “Annandale HS Flag Football Tournament”. It was so much fun watching our students support their classmates. In the final moments of their first game, the Juniors came from behind to win the chance to move on to the next round. The energy of the crowd was amazing. Finally, at the end of the Championship game, when the Seniors defeated the Juniors, the fans rushed the field, everyone smiling and laughing. And, in true Atom Nation spirit, the Senior team congratulated the Junior team on a well played game. The entire stadium celebrated together in the joy of the event. Congrats to all players, coaches and staff members who made the event a success.

This week is Homecoming Week! We encourage students to show Atom Nation pride and connect with our school community by participating in Spirit Days. We will have a Pep Rally on Thursday, Friday night is our Homecoming tailgate and football game against Mt. Vernon, and finally, Saturday evening will be our Masquerade Homecoming Dance. Please see below for additional details about this fun week.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Additional dates may be added to accommodate students who were virtual and could not be screened during the previous school year. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood.

Learn more about the screener and review the questions here. To opt your student out of participating in the screener, please complete the opt-out form found here and return to your student's W4 teacher by October 8.

PSAT School Day (Grade 10 and 11): On Wednesday, October 13, Annandale High School will host both the PSAT/NMSQT for all students in grades 10 & 11.

SAT School Day (Grade 12): On Wednesday, October 13, Annandale High School 12th graders will have the opportunity to take the SAT School Day.

Important Information

2021-22 AP/IB Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees: As part of the FCPS budget, FCPS is continuing to pay for the first six IB/AP tests a student wishes to take. Students will be assessed Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test fees for any tests beyond the first six funded by FCPS. Students that have free/reduced lunch status and have completed the consent to share form, will not be charged these fees.

FCPS and Annandale High School encourage all students to take AP/IB tests for courses in which they are enrolled. This is an excellent opportunity to practice taking a college level exam. When IB scores are released in July 2022, students have the opportunity to share their score with their colleges. However, if students wish to not test they will have the opportunity to opt-out.

To obtain the opt-out form, students must see Mrs. Bradshaw (LMBradshaw@fcps.edu), IB Diploma Coordinator, in the library. Opt-Out forms are due by October 22. Parents will be billed in December for any test fees beyond the six FCPS funded tests. These fees are non-refundable and there is no spring cancellation option.

2022 IB Testing Dates: Please reference the IB exam dates site for dates of IB Exams. All IB exams will be taken in school in a paper/pencil format. IB students who wish forego the exam and do not complete and submit the Opt-Out form by October 22 will be assessed a $119 cancellation fee. Students that choose to opt-out of an IB exam are still required to complete the IB internal assessment (IA) and any other IB external assessments. The IA counts as a major assessment grade in each IB class.

Senior Pictures: Seniors who have not taken their senior pictures yet can sign up to do so on October 11-12 and December 7-10. Pictures will be taken in the dance room (back of upstairs gym) and are after school (3:00-9:00pm). Seniors can begin book appointments NOW on https://prestigeportraits.com. They can find their name by utilizing the “Search by City & State” feature or using the appointment code they were sent in the mail. If they have any questions, they should contact Lifetouch Prestige at 855-918-2930.

Underclassmen Pictures: Make-up pictures for underclassmen who have not taken their picture yet will be held on Monday, October 18 in the library. This is a white day. Students are encouraged to let their W4 teacher know they need to take their picture and go down then.

Yearbook and Senior Tribute Ads: The 2022 Antenna Yearbook and Senior Tribute Ads can be purchased now www.yearbookforever.com. Buy your yearbook now! Prices are currently $75 and will rise to $85 on November 1.

Back to School Night Tomorrow!

AHS News1 month 3 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

We are looking forward to hosting Back to School Night tomorrow!

Back to School Night is an opportunity for families to learn more about what your student is learning in school and how to better support them. During this challenging time, we are approaching Back-to-School Night a little differently than in years past. We will be offering a hybrid model which includes both a virtual and in-person option.

Virtual Option

On the Annandale High School website, we have videos that teachers have created explaining what your student is learning in their class and how you as a family can best support them. You will be able to access these videos beginning tomorrow, September 30.

In-Person Option

After many months of only virtual interactions, we would also like to offer an in-person option for those who would prefer this method. Tomorrow from 6:00-8:00pm, we will provide an opportunity for families to interact with their student’s teachers in a meaningful way and briefly discuss the student’s progress. Families will have brief conversations with their student’s teachers to gain a snapshot of how the student is performing so far this school year. Here are some reminders for this event:

  • Bring a copy of your student’s schedule with you so that you can identify your student’s teachers
  • Remember that these are very brief conversations that should last no more than five minutes each. You may always arrange for a longer parent-teacher conference at a different time to discuss your student in more detail.
  • Translation services will be limited and you are welcome to bring your student with you to attend, as needed.
  • Be mindful of time and prioritize which teachers you would like to conference with since you may not be able to connect with every teacher.
  • While waiting for your turn to conference with a teacher, please remember to socially distance.
  • While we are outdoors, we encourage all attendees to wear masks.

This event will take place outdoors on our football field. It will begin at 6:00pm and end at 8:00pm. Please be mindful that parking is limited and we recommend parking at the back of the school.
