The IB Middle Years Program provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers. Students are required to study their native language, a second language, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and technology. In the 10th grade, students also engage in a personal project, which allows them to demonstrate the understandings and skills they have developed throughout the program. The project may relate to any topic of the student’s choice, so it is truly an opportunity for students to develop their passions. Students choose one of six global contexts to focus their learning: Identities and Relationships, Orientation in Space and Time, Personal and Cultural Expression, Scientific and Technical Innovation, Globalization and Sustainability, or Fairness and Development. “The personal project provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and often creative product/outcome and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in the MYP. The project offers many opportunities for differentiation of learning and expression according to students’ individual needs.
